It *would* be easier, perhaps, but the point of playing the game this way is not necessarily to make it easier, but to rack up six extra 1ups that you wouldn't necessarily have if you played the game straight-up the way it was designed. It's as close to sequence-breaking as you can get in a game as linear as this one.
