I was one of those 'teeny boppers' and now I'm 44 and got to watch them live in South Africa this year and let me tell you teeny bopper or not, AHA stays absolutely true to who they are without having to justify or prove who they are?! Their music stands the test of time and their melodies are timeless! The interviewer is a dufus
These 3 individuals and together as a group are beyond compare. It was “enjoyable” to watch them interact with the obnoxious host. Laughable when Paul “flipped” host with his middle finger while holding his hand up to his face.😊
A ha's "ephemeral" music has been shown to survive the test of time. Take on me will always make me feel great when ever I hear it. Their second album Scoundrel Days had amazing adventurous songs on it. When they started again in the new century they did some even more amazing albums. These guys are and have always been amazingly talented individuals.
Couldn't agree more about the host. I'm not sure he could have BEEN more antagonistic toward the guys. IMO the way the guys handled him just goes to show how much class they have!! : )
These guys are very intelligent and well-spoken. Particularly since English is their second language. The interviewer was really harping on the teeny -bopper aspect but I think they handled it very well.
Norwegians learn English, along with Norwegian at the same time, in their country, since Kindergarten....Most native Norwegians in Norway, speak English, jut for everyone's information. They teach English, right alongside Norwegian, UNLIKe most other countries, so folks there, grow up totally bi-lingual.
My God!!! These guys are SO RESPECTFUL to that idiot of an interviewer. Magne and Morten held their ground so well. Little did he know that in a few years AHa would play to nearly 198,000 paying ticket holders in Rock in Rio!!!
The music , yes , is very synth-y 80's...but for the most part has stood the test of time. Particularly the lyrics. If you consider how the songs were rearranged musically for the fairly recent unplugged album , the songs are quite beautiful and that is timeless. Especially considering Morten's voice is still pretty damn incredible.
there´s a kind of distance between the interviewer and the guys. a-ha wanted to be a serious band and not only the teenie idols which was a picture that was created by take on me... but take on me will always be a part of music history because of its postmodern approach, the connection between virtuality and reality. it´s not only a comic strip showing young men, it´s a kind of art.
I think who the time answered all this... We was teenagers, but got old together with them... Now, 2020, we're misses and misters, but our love didn't change. The young people of 80's will love A-Ha forever!!! Kisses and thanks for all!!❤❤❤
Ephemeral pop? That's why The sun always shines is my favorite song and I'm 33... yep it was such a flash in the pan. Btw they completely outclassed this d bag.
Even though I didn't like the interviewer because of the abrasive way he put his questions, I still enjoyed this because he did get them to open up and prove to the naysayers that they have more substance than fluff. The usual shallow questions were what perpetuated the "ephemeral" stuff which they admitted to have encouraged but they were hoping to neutralize that as they grow into their music while acknowledging the impact it had to their success. When Morten said "the music has to move me no matter what happens to it", that was beautiful because their music ended up moving a lot of people.
"One of Norways most valuable exports..." And then in the background you can hear spluttering like one of the boys try not to laugh or scoff as they had probably heard that thousands of times before.
In the music industry, they were, and they knew. We all knew, and they still are. What they also knew was that Norway at that time had found oil off the coast, which made oil our most valuable exports. At least if money counts as value.
I absolutely agree. This was the 1st album I purchased on my own as a teen after given HHAL by a girlfriend. Totally blown away by it. I would take Scoundrel Days over Take on Me by a country mile.
@@marklendhurst1193 take on me is my least fav song on the debut, but scoundrel days just has something so perfectly encapsulated in one album. I still think it's most A-Ha album they released, wanting to go a bit more alternative as opposed to mainstream pop.
The guys are right, it's definitely a multi-genre band that people come back to years later, I'm an example of that, lol They came out when I was born, now Iam back as a fan... God i love Morten, even at his age now- wow is he amazing! Take on me (original version) is my fave clip & song of all time :0)
It's great to see how they handle the "teenie-bop" image thing: without being snobbish and up-tight about it. Quite the opposite of Kajagoogoo, for example, who killed their own career by getting rid of Limahl in a desperate and misguided attempt to lose their teenie-bopper image
This, ladies and gentlemen, is why music artists absolutely hate giving some interviews. Those fucking interviewers have no idea what it means for a musician to make music, let alone share their work with the public. You put your heart and soul into your work, you're proud of it, full of confidence, and the next thing you know you're getting screwed by an interviewer. That's absolutely disrespectful!
🇲🇽👍👏👏👏!!! They are My Favorite Band since I was 8 Years old & obviously that I knew that They could get success because their Music make the difference, They are so unique! They are not comercial Band based in an image, just For that They are an ICON now! Not only for One Hit! I love them, They are Great indeed! They learned Perfect English to connect with the Musical World This was Amazing! 😉 Thanks to Share This part about who have a doubt about them Today made History!
Kinda funny that this interviewer indicated their success wouldn't last for long which was more than 30 years ago and they're still going strong. Hope he did learn how to treat people more appropriate in that time, he was very rude.
It WAS difficult to watch, especially towards the end of this segment. Haven't see the rest. Almost don't want to (but I will because I want to see the guys talk about themselves. Hope they don't have to defend themselves so much). Ruthless interviewer. :(
after seeing a-ha the movie it seems they shared a lot of the feelings of the interviewer lol Paul even says at one point he should've been in a band like echo and the bunnymen.
I think that the main problem with a-ha decreasing in popularity after Take On Me was their looks/appearance. And by that I mean that they were always seen as a band of handsome boys/men and their music was not taken so much seriously as other rock bands with more trashy styled members, such as Guns'n Roses etc. I honestly think that the lyrics and music of most of their songs are very deep, but kids were totally in love with the way Morten looked and they took over the audience, the teeny-bop.
Actually the teeny bop (male and female) WERE the first audience, there was nothing to take over. It was literally us or nothing, at the start. And a-ha knew that, very well, so they catered to this and played the role. They just thought they could start that way and then move on, as the Beatles did. The audience was not wrong for them as such: such audiences grow up, gain understanding, infect their new friends, their boyfriends/ girlfriends and then their colleagues and children, ... it would have been a nice natural evolution. If we as fans could have kept our chins up and been proud. If a-ha could have been spared interviews such as these. But here you see the best example of what happened: the media caught them in that little belittling box of 'boys' band for teens' and kept them there, for years and years. They kept us fans hostage together with the band in that little box of idée fixe, as if over the years we collectively and individually learnt nothing, nor evolved, nor grew up even a bit. And they riled us for it. We resented that: a-ha ànd the fans, that image diminished us both, it poisoned our relationship on both ends. So what if we did appreciate the depth of the songs, noone recognized that, not in us. Even you do not, absurdly. For an a-ha fan in many European countries (luckily it was not a global phenomenon), by the end of the 80's , this was the choice: Either drop a-ha, or be ridiculed for being perceived as someone forever stuck at the age of 14. In the end, we had to break that media spell by walking away from it, we had to each gain our own credibility in the eyes of the world, before being able to return to each other. My hat off for those die-hard European fans who bit through all that crap and stuck with them till a-ha blew things up for themselves the first time. (In great part for the reasons mentioned here btw...) Frankly I myself had enough other crap on my plate already. ;-) .
Bethfromwigan its now 2019 and they’re on a world tour which is already selling out - who is this guy again?... dont bother actually not interested !!... this shows how professional they guys were even back then. By the way whomever you are I am one of those ‘screaming kids’ from the mid eighties im now a special needs teacher and almost 50 and i am still loving their music and they’re still performing and producing it - also they’ve broken many records and won many awards - almost 40 years together and proven their status within the industry screaming kids aside - that music from back then is still incredible - did he cut ally listen to any of it and the meanings behind the lyrics? Course not
This is hard to watch - but also easy in another sense - theyre almost 40 years in now (in 2022) and still touring to sell out venues all over the world from Australia to Russia to America - whose this guy again? Incidentally Mr no-mark, I’m one of those screaming kids from the mid 80s , now 48 and a special needs teacher, singer and mother and still a big fan of these incredible musicians . 40 years of awards and broken records - and you are who?? Done ! #roasted!
This interview is unintentionally hilarious, cause clearly the interviewer hasnt got a clue and/or doesnt give a toss about the band etc...next to no research. What a joke and an insult, albeit their reactions are hilarious and still quite dignified.
I really don't like that host. It's one thing to ask questions, but it almost seemed like he wanted to argue with the guys. The host kept cutting them off. The guys were getting a bit frustrated trying to speak. But, thanks for sharing all the same. ;)
This interviewer tries so hard to pidgeonhole them but they stick to their guns and well let's see I am a fan 20 or more so years younger than these guys and the year is 2019. I am still listening to A-ha, my son's who are between 15 and 6 love this band yeah nah I'd say their music has more than stood the test of time. As for the show and the interviewer? Vanished into obscurity.
Teeny Bop? Screaming Kids? Oh boy, Have you ever listened to the records? Have you done some basic research about the band and their music material rather than those charts? This is a clear example of asking absurd questions backed up with unreliable sources. 🙄
What a sloppy slug this is! Thank heavens he didn't last long....... unlike A-HA! Must have been a bummer sitting there with 3 extremely handsome guys - and you're the only teeny-bopper in the room! Shocking interview. How these guys kept their cool........
