The technology is called rotoscoping. Basically they took the live action video and then 2 artists drew illustrations over the film, frame by frame, manually. It was over 10k frames to illustrate, it took months to finish it. But they've created a masterpiece that was ahead of its time.

Eyyy, Norway with the old school classic's! His name is Morten Harket fyi :) They have a lot of great songs, they did great in Scandinavia though their music did not stay that popular in the states. My recommendations as a Norwegian myself would be The Sun Always Shines on T.V or High and Low, both great songs!

First of all thankyou for reacting to AHA and take on me. I became an AHA fan back in 1985 when this song and video came out. I was 16 years old then and i’m 53 now and i still love them as much now as i did back then. AHA are a trio of men from Oslo,Norway. They are a criminally underrated and unappreciated band of extremely talented musicians with a huge back catalogue of music each song is different from the last one. Take on me is just the tip of a very, very large musical iceberg but don’t take my word for it check out more of their music for yourself and you’ll soon get what i’m talking about. I describe AHA as the viking invasion of 1985 that entered my heart and never left. A great AHA song to check out is SUMMER MOVED ON it is on the guinness book of records for the longest note held in a song something like 25.5 seconds without taking a breath. Thanks again and i hope you’ll react to more of AHA’s music. Take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇴❤️ #AHA FOREVER ❤️🇳🇴

At the time, in 1985, that video clip was a revolution, it was the first video clip to be made with the "comic strip" effect. Today, in 2024, you can simply make a video like this on a cell phone. Another phenomenal video is Peter Gabriel "Sledgehammer" from 1986.

The Take On Me music video blew people away when it came out in 1985. This was before CGI was being used in movies. They used a process called rotoscoping where the entire video is filmed in live action then the animated parts are hand drawn over each frame of video. It took several months to get the video made and the end result was worth it.

First (and I think so far only?) number 1 billboard hit by a Norwegian band, way back in 1985. The video was mindblowing for the time, and of course this being before computers were advanced enough, each frame of film of those mixed real/cartoon scenes had to be drawn over by hand, frame by frame. It's a shame this song caused them to be seen as a "one hit wonder" in the USA, because they had a lot of good songs, and in the UK this wasnt even their highest charted song (this reached number 2 there, while the follow-up single, The Sun Always Shines On TV, reached number 1). They also did the theme song for the Bond film The Living Daylights

Love your reaction to this song and video. A-ha has a lot of great songs. You should listen to the follow up, "The sun always shines on TV". In the beginning of that video you can see what happens to the couple. "Train of thought" also has a video using this technique, called rotoscoping. In that song Mortens voice is amazing, he is really showing his vocal on the lower scale of the range.

They're a Norwegian band so they were kinda like a one hit wonder here, but they're well known elsewhere, tons of great songs all the way into the 2000's, and they're videos are phenomenal with this type of stuff, with paper in particular. I highly recommend you watch them and try to watch them in order because some are like sequels and connect into each other. I think "the sun always shines on tv" is the next song. And yeah the lead singer is unreal, haha, a record producer's dream I bet.

The 80s were not a technological stone age, and good drafters and graphic artists are born all the time, only the Internet and mobile phones were absent then, and computers were already around then. Also, much more money was spent on the production of video clips at that time, because what someone liked, you had to buy it on vinyl, cassette or CD and you could not download it anywhere illegally, so it was a 100% generated profit.

Yeah, the video was a majorly impressive piece when it came out... the technique it used was decades old but it'd never been used like that and they got a budget and effort for a music video that was basically unheard of (excepting one other video that year). They spent what was, for today's money, around $400-500K, did thousands of individual hand drawings for the animation, and took months just for the drawing portion... let alone putting the whole thing together. They basically got handed and used the time and money of a minor film during an era when videos were starting to become more experimental on MTV.

The animation method is called rotoscope. They film the entire video, and then artists hand-draw the animation over the film, frame by frame. That's what allows for that perfect merging of animation and live action. Super labor-intensive, thus expensive, thus nobody does it anymore.

I recommend a song, or if you even would call it a song. It's called "Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen". I remember hearing it the first time when I was a teenager, even then it hit different. And I can tell ya, nowdays it is pretty spot on. It started first as a speech from an essay. The lyrics are taken from a famous essay - written in 1997 by Mary Schmich, a columnist with the Chicago Tribune, but someone decided to add music and a video to it and it sure hits home. You'll understand when you listen to it.

Completely unrelated to music but if you want another bit of unique animation, please check out the film "Loving Vincent" the world 1st and only oil painting film, you'd also probably be interested in the making of "Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream". The film deals with the life and death of world renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh and the film is painted in his unique style. It took 125 artists and 65,000 paintings to make the film, it is an amazingly beautiful film that any fan of the arts should see. On a musical note, and in keeping with Vincent Van Gogh, famous folk singer Don McLean of the song "American Pie" fame, wrote an amazing and hauntingly beautiful tribute song to the great artist, simply titled "Vincent" but is often, mistakenly referred to as "Starry Starry Night", that I highly recommend reacting too. As for how the video was made, my guess is they shot a full-length live action video and then had a team of artists sketch out the animated portions from stills, so they could blend the 2 seamlessly.
