Tandulanali Jataka (#5)
In this video, the Buddha tells a story of the past about how an incompetent valuer sets the price of the whole country of Benares equal to a measure of rice.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.

How many King Bhramadatt's were born ? 😂 Buddhism means Universal Truth. But every time we get King Bhramadatta then where is the Truth ? 😂 No disrespect, I too am a devout Buddhist & I learn many moral values from the animated videos. That's why this question arises. 🙏♥️

@Joydeep, In our studying of the Jataka stories, we often see that stories start with, “when Brahmadatta reigned in Benares…” At the end of each story, the Buddha concludes the Jataka by revealing who was whom. Many of the Buddha’s students were born in the past as Brahmadatta as he reigned in Benares. From this, we can infer that Brahmadatta was not always the same person in all the stories. From our asking Pali experts, reading various opinions on the topic, it seems that Brahmadatta was the name of the position or the name people often took once they became king. Brahmadatta translates to “Given by Brahma.” Brahma is often worshipped as one of the highest level gods in the world. So it is not strange for the ruler of a large empire to take on the name of Brahmadatta. Benares was also a common name given to the capital city of the empire. Therefore, it seems Brahmadatta does not always refer to the same person and Benares does not refer to the same physical city. Another point of interest is that these past rebirths often occurred at different time periods in the past. Some rebirths were separated by great amounts of time, therefore many Brahmadattas have been born and died, and many Benares were built and had fallen into decay.
