~ PART 1 ~ "There wasn't, like, a plan..."
In 1989, on an early August evening at Fort Warren, George's Island, in Boston Harbor, five reenactors belonging to Co. I, 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, gathered together with their instruments near the company campfire and for the first time began to sing songs that would have been familiar to the Confederate soldiers imprisoned there during the American Civil War. Part 1 tells about how we all happened to first meet and how we began the journey that ended more than thirty-years later. The story of the early days of the band - the 2nd South Carolina String Band - named in honor of the reenactment unit that brought them together.

The music you guys have made has touched a lot of people. For a lot of these civil war era songs your rendition is the one that comes up as the definitive version. Your albums were my introduction to American folk music back when I was a kid and I'm pretty sure the same will be true for young people who are just finding your music today.

Thank you for your kind words. They mean a lot to us. One of our reenacting friends once said of the music: "It's EVERGREEN." The songs themselves are classics and have stood the test of time. We can only be humbly grateful if our treatments of them are able to pass the same test.

Appreciate the comments at end RE: end of day sessions, no suprise that your music brings folks together - it's moving and (most often) uplifting, makes everyone a kid again.. thank you guys (and your families no doubt supporting you over the years)

As an Ulster Scots man (Americans say scotch Irish) i find it so interesting so see how the ancestors of so many people from Ireland and Scotland shaped the land and the history of America and still cling on to so many of our traditions without even realising.

I'm a 57 years old US Navy veteran who has often felt the urge to get into reenactment of the Rev War and Civ War . Since I've already served ten years wearing a Union uniform, would I be allowed to participate as a Reb ? I'm a South Carolina native and I abhor the idea of wearing a blue uniform that's dated after the Revolutionary War except for the blue jacket and dungarees that I wore as a Navy sailor . To me, the blue uniform of the US Army represents Yankee aggression and subject subjectation of my Native American ancestors .

Well, thanks for your service, one old Navy (Res) vet to another ! Of course, you can be a Reb ! I was born in Illinois and lived my whole life north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and I've been a Reb since 5th Grade. Just go online and search for CS reenactment groups in your area. Easy-peasy. Good luck !
