With the coronation of King Charles III & Queen Consort Camilla fast approaching, let's learn more about this ancient right of monarchs. Since ancient times, placing a crown upon a monarch’s head was a powerful symbol. It was believed to bestow a heavenly mandate to rule, or even transform a monarch into a living god. Most people don’t think of King Charles as especially divine. But he also won’t be expected to smite an enemy or walk a marathon around the city as Egyptian Pharaohs did, be asked to publicly defend his claim to the throne like Persian Kings, or lead his army on a months long march to the Vatican like the Holy Roman Emperors. And Camila is unlikely to perform a blood sacrifice and summon a vision serpent, like a Mayan Queen Consort. Let’s explore the evolution of coronations across the world from ancient to modern times. See how different cultural traditions built on each other to create modern ceremonies, and learn how secularism and revolutions have done away with all the other coronations in Europe.
Ancient Egypt Coronations
Hebrew Bible Coronations
Ancient Persia Coronations
Mayan Empire Coronations
Roman Empire Coronations
Byzantine Empire Coronations
Medieval Europe Coronations

In the Mexican coronation rite, the President of the Congress (speaker of the lower house) places the crown on the Emperor's head saying (among other things), "Remember the great power you are given by the Nation is limited by the Constitution... if you do not fulfill your duties appropriately, the Nation has the right to reclaim it." That popular sovereignty warning is likely a big reason why the Mexican monarchy hasn't lasted to today.

Great video! One minor correction: the monarch, who wore Saint Stephen's crown for the last time is called Karl IV (or IV. Károly if you want to be extra authentic) in Hungary. He was the first monarch named Karl in Austria, but Hungary had three before him (Karl I of Hungary is actually a rather well known king from the Anjou dinasty, who ruled in the 14th century). Saint Stephen's crown belongs to Hungary, not Austria (as it is told in the video when discussing Maria Theresa's coronations), so I think it is fit to call the monarch Karl IV, since that was his official name as King of Hungary (just like people call the king following Elisabeth I on the throne James I & VI)

"May the Emperor live forever" is an updated version of an acclamation that goes back at least as far as the Persians. It's referenced in Daniel 6:21. Yonks ago there was a superb musical ensemble called the New York Pro Musica. Their purpose was to perform works from the Middle Ages. One of these was, oddly enough, 'The Play of Daniel.' It was performed in Latin and the acclamation therein was "Rex in aeternum vive!" a literal translation. One of the lyrics in "Zadok the Priest," the coronation anthem for the anointing of the king, is "May the king live forever." Just offering this up as bits of trivia that may be of interest to some of your listeners. Thank you for the wonderful job you do and for the depth of your research. I love your videos.

My friend who I will call T is seeing a guy who I lovingly refer to as Soldier Boy who is a member of the Kings Guards. He is in the marching band and does the changing of the guard and stuff like that. He is currently gearing up and starting all the preparations for the coronation of Charles III. She is very smitten with him and while I don't have much respect for the royal family I admire his discipline and dedication in his job especially as he often has to go to Ireland a lot. There is already a long distance between my friend and Soldier Boy because he lives and worked in London and T lives and works in Barnsley in Yorkshire. I just wanted to talk about it because I think it is interesting. Update: T broke up with Soldier boy. He was not very good and was insecure and jealous and edged a little too close to controlling for T's liking. She is now in a casual relationship with a hunky footballer. Not one in a major league though.

@@idahagen9760 I am sorry but no. Italian free cities (and there were many of them) involved commoners in politics. There were even some, most notably Florence, where aristocrats were explicitly forbidden from being elected to government offices. However, byzantine travelers-who spoke greek-when they went to Italy naturally called those cities "democracies".

Hi Lindsay, love your videos, an idea for future videos is to put small text boxes with the name of places, like in the case with the churches of Notre-Dame de Paris and Notre-Dame de Reims, 20:39 , so as to distinguish between the two, it confused me when the picture of the later appeared and you said "....Rom's cathedral..." it could confuse some to think it was a special cathedral of Rome or confuse some to as which is "The Notre-Dame" (Notre-Dame de Paris). Although I love your videos it’s time for real truth to be unveiled. The true anointing has nothing to do with pouring oils on top of someone’s head. The true meaning of anointing is when the priest and priestess engaged in tantric sex ritual aka sacred marriage aka hieros gamos, the woman would transmit her divine bodily elixers to the man which would in turn rise up his spine and activate his pineal gland. This is what a true anointing is in order for a man to be called a king and rule over a country he had to become illuminated by his queens elixer., soma, ambrosia , etc. This is the true hidden/occult meaning of becoming anointed. Pouring oil on top of someone’s head does nothing. It’s the metaphor for the true inner meaning.

@@nmv33 It's got nothing to do with coronation- it's 2 different types of queen. A Queen Consort, like Camilla, is just the wife of a king, & he's the actual monarch. A Queen Regnant, like Elizabeth II, is the actual monarch in her own right, by birth, regardless of who or if she marries. We just usually don't use it as part of their title: Elizabeth II wasn't called Queen Regnant Elizabeth II, & her mother wasn't called Queen Consort Elizabeth. It could've been useful tho!

Darling, I love your video. But there is no such as BCE. Since the bce/ce nonsense is based on Jesus, you may use the proper naming of BC/AD. This way people will know what you are talking about and won't be confused and annoyed.

I think you have that backwards. BC stands for Before Christ, and AD stands for Anno Domini, both references to Jesus. BCE means before the common era, removing the reference to Jesus, but still keeping the current numbering of years.

@Marie Clapdorp maybe I did not phrase it properly. It still counts the years from the birth of Jesus. Thus, just the same difference whatever you call it, as long as Jesus is included. 😃

I agree. BC/AD was fine until just recently, I suppose because of the P.C. (POLITICALLY CORRECT) stuff. Look, the Jews and the Muslims have their own dating systems, but I never heard them complain about using our calendar; I don't see why the historians should change now either. Another example of messing with things just for the hell of it.

@@marieclapdorp2580 Exactly; BCE/CE is the NON-Christian terminology! And if you're objecting to counting history from Jesus' birth, you're saying we should change our entire dating system, & there shouldn't be any need to explain how UTTERLY INSANE & STUPID that would be! And given Jesus quite likely wasn't even born in 1AD, you can't take the whole thing too seriously.

Her accent is so awful that I only lasted a few seconds. Had I got to the point where BCE was used I would have stopped watching.
