Just my two cents here. I think not mentioning the Macho King at all was a HUGE omission, and deserving of a followup, not just a cheeky graphic. Becoming the Macho King really allowed Randy Savage to bounce back after the whole "Mega Powers" run with Hogan petered out in 89. If you look back at that era, guys who would finish up with being Hogan's punching bag mostly dithered afterwards. (Million Dollar Man, Earthquake, Sgt Slaughter etc) Becoming the Macho King, as silly as it was, gave him a real chance to rebuild from a position that others couldn't. He had a great partner in "Queen" Sheri Martel, which led to some great feuds and matches. Yes, there was some funkiness with Zeus... but overall becoming the Macho King was a great move. Case in point, the Retirement Match with the Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 7. What a story they told in the ring. Fans wanted to see the Macho Man return, but how can you miss him if he won't go away? Being the Macho King allowed Randy to be someone else for a while, so that when "the Kingdom of the Madness was cracked in half" and the Macho King retired, it could lead to one of Randy Savage's best runs in his career. Without the Macho King, we wouldn't have had the return of the Macho Man in all his Pomp and Circumstantial glory. No feel good reunion with Miss Elizabeth, no fairy tale wedding, no feud with Jake, leading to the fans demanding his return and winning the title from Ric Freaking Flair at Wrestlemania! Overall, I'd rank the Macho King as the second or third best king gimmick in wrestling history, contending with King Booker. For the Macho Man, becoming the Macho King gave us as fans and him as a performer time to rest and reset, so that he could come back better than ever!

I think Mabel's big King of the Ring push was meant just to create a monster heel to feed to Diesel in the Roman Reigns-esque effort to get him over as face of the company. They needed someone to look like a credible threat to Big Daddy Cool to get him sympathy and they figured Mabel had the size to pull it off. It worked for me, but I was 10 and would cheer and boo whoever they told me to.

You missed my favorite person of Royalty in wrestling:The Duchess of Queensbury from Backlash 2001 although she was not a wrestler not a queen or princess and only had one appearance but none the less she had a whole match named and centered on her Duchess of Queensbury Rules match

I'm surprised you didn't talk about Lawler's earliest work in WWE, Brian. He may have settled into the announce table but King also brought all his experience and skill with promos and riling crowds up in his brief feud with Bret Hart. Granted, it's largely forgotten, but that was still quite a feud they had.

How about King Andy Kaufman? When he came out to fight Lawler in a match he dressed up as a king and started singing “Oh I’m the King of Memphis, Tennessee! I knocked that Lawler out last week, I’ll knock that Lawler out this week! A boo boo boo, a bee bee bee! “ Or King R-Truth, when he feuded with King Barrett wearing a bath towel as a cape, a cardboard crown held together with duct tape, and a plunger for a scepter. Now THAT’S a king!

For me the worst king gimmick is King Barrett because it was the beginning of the end for his WWE Career.

Hey guys, I loved this video and I'm aware I'm commenting on this WAY late, but I still wanted to acknowledge my favorite King gimmick in Wrestling right now. There's a guy in Norhteast Wrestling, kinda the local indie promotion around the Connecticut area where I live called King Brian Anthony. This guy is not only super talented in the ring, but also dedicated to the character on a level that would make Tommaso Ciampa blush. He's got the Crown, the Robe, The Scepter, the works. He's got a whole Stable called The Royal Court, he's got a sort of Ricardo Rodriguez figure named Baron Von Vito, he heckles fans during the meet and greets, I have never once seen this dude break kayfabe, and he's most known for his feud with Jerry Lawler who I guess has ties to this promotion. All good stuff. Just wanted to give that particular King a shout out.

Great video Brian! My pick for the most underrated royalty gimmick has to go to AJ Styles. He got a "Prince" gimmick in TNA that launched his career. I think he got it by winning TNA's equivalent to the King of the Ring tournament and was labeled "The Prince of Phenomenal" and that started his rapid rise to main event and champion status first in TNA, and now in WWE. I doubt we'd even know who "The Phenomenal One" is if it weren't for "The Prince of Phenomenal" AJ Styles.

I think the idea with King Mabel is they wanted to give a Diesel a monster heel to feud with and having Mabel win the KOTR was the quickest way to push him to the top of the card.

To think with a depth of talent like that King of the Ring 95 was the best they could come up.

There's also the infamous "Kings of Wrestling" from TNA (Jarrett/Nash/Hall). For a team that existed for all of one pay per view, certainly infamous.

One correction there was a King vs King for the crown match (Haku vs Race) at the Royal Rumble 1989 it was shown live but the reply of the PPV (on tape) they put it on world class for some reason.

Are you not allowed to mention TNA?!! Madison Rayne had the last great Royalty gimmick as The Queen Bee of TNA. You also had Jeff Jarrett as The King of the Mountain. Debra was a Queen I’m WCW as a beauty queen but I don’t find it memorable lol. But props for the Stephanie McMahon shoutout. Thing is she has matured from 2000 and is more of a queen as she is the highest rank women in WWE now Linda is gone. Steph in 2013 and 2014 was the best heel in WWE after that she’s almost had a split personality lol

Back in the early 80s Haku wrestled as prince Tonga in championship wrestling from Florida so to become king was simply the next step up 💖🤼‍♂️

Jerry "The King" Lawler will always be the TRUE King to me. Both as a heel and a babyface. The gimmick works better when he's a heel on commentary because he was always kissing The Corporation's ass, especially Vince McMahon and JR would always root for Stone Cold. I miss those days !!
