#ProjectUkraine has partnered up with the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre. For six years, this Ukrainian charity researched the history of the Babyn Yar Massacre, compiling contemporary accounts, analyzing and systematizing verified historical sources. The Memorial Centre in Kyiv was bombed by Russian troops at the start of the invasion. Today, the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre has transformed its projects, refocusing its resources and efforts on purchasing and delivering humanitarian aid to civilians, and evacuating people from combat zones. In the first week of April, the centre provided over 7000 food baskets to patients and doctors at Kyiv hospitals, to bomb shelters in the Kyiv underground, as well as to people with disabilities and elderly people who cannot leave their homes. They also provided targeted assistance to 3354 people, delivering specific medications, food and hygiene products on individual requests. You guys realise that the Principality of Theodoro has nothing to do with Ukrainian History but with Greece? Just because Crimea is de facto part of Ukraine doesn't give them free access to History of other cultures like the Greeks. But I saw what you did there when you mention how St.Stephen the Great sent *Wallachian soldiers to help out😉

This was great! Please do more videos about Trebizond and the Pontic region. I find the history of the successor states after 1204 particularly interesting, in terms of how they saw themselves and how they each tried to continue the legacy of the byzantine state, what their challenges and geographic circumstances were, and what life was like for ordinary people living in Trebizond, Epirus and Nicaea. Basically, the contrast and development of these states is really interesting a topic, I think. Any talk of continuity is always referred to through Nicaea, which would go on to restore the empire, but the perspective of Epirus and Trebizond and how they each managed their successor states, is an underappreciated chapter in byzantine history.

One of my favorite countries. As your video describes they have a tough start. The Crimean khanate May declare war within several months of starting the game. If Crimean gets conquered or loses a war Theodoro could be transferred as a subject to Kazan, the Great Horde, or Nogay. You can only really brute force Crimea and then conquer Georgia and Circassia. From there you might conquer Caspian states like shirvan, mazandaran, and puts east to India. You can vassalize countries though without a cb. I used this with East Frisia to join the Holy Roman Empire, which gives you protection from the emperor. You could then use the positioning to go colonial or keep your Pontic lands and dominate Asia. Because of the unique challenges of the start and identity of Crimean Goths it’s a worthwhile campaign; I think forming Rome as theodoro should be an achievement.

Out of interest, how aware were Byzantine emperors of their Roman predecessors? For example, take a Palaiologos emperor, how aware would they be of the Roman emperors and subsequent Byzantine emperors?
@EasternRomanHistory
@EasternRomanHistory 2 года назад
Speaking of educated Eastern Romans, since they are the only people we have sources from, that people like Theodore Metochites and Nikephoros Gregoras were very aware of their past. The latter even called ALexios Philanthopenos another Belisarius, implying he had read a history such as Procopius of Malalas. In the recording of Constantine XI's speech by Leonard of CHios, he brings up quite a lot of Roman history.

This is the most detailed source of information on the Principality of Theodoro that I’ve ever seen!! Brilliantly done, thank you so much for making this! I’m designing a DnD campaign based loosely on the Fall of Theodoro taking place in a land that I’m modeling a lot after it in its final years. Because it’s such an obscure event nowadays they’re none the wiser to its origins, and this video gives me some great material to work with!

Are these Gabrades by any chance related to Theodore Gabras, the 11th century doux of Chaldia?
@EasternRomanHistory
@EasternRomanHistory 2 года назад
If the Khovra are indeed part of the Gabrades family then yes, Theodore would be one of their ancestors. I know Anthony Bryer has conjectured that the Gabrades may have moved to Gothia after the second fall of Sinope after the death of Manuel I Grand Komnenos since they are known to have been the governor of the city at that time.

An absolute pleasure. The sources suggest that the region was very mixed, with Tartars, Goths, Greeks, Italians, Slavs. The ruling class were Greek speaking Goths but quite a few Tartarised names show up.

@apopleonapopleontos4658 2 года назад
@@EasternRomanHistory the video was generally good...but.. you start by "the history of principality of Theodoro starts with the arrival of the Goths". Well..no. The cities of the coast were all established and inhabited for centuries by Greeks and Roman rule was present. Principality of Theodoro was actually a byzantine micro-state, a branch of Trebizond which was a branch of the Roman (byzantine) empire. It used to be the byzantine "Thema Cherson" for some 500 years and then "Perateia" of the empire of Trebizond( which means "opposite coast"). It is true that some gothic speaking minority survived well to the 16th cent., but the name "Gothia" was mostly the name of the Bishopry. The influence of the tatars is well attested , as well as the multi-ethnic character, but if we should name the principality in terms of culture and as a whole that would be "byzantine". The official language was greek, religion christian Orthodoxy, ruling family the Gabras from Trebizond, symbol the double head Eagle. You present it as if a bunch of 3th century Goths were having their fun time 1000 years after the Great Migration.

Always fascinating the history of Byzantine states. I've always wondered since Constantinople was a Greek speaking region. And Latin gave way to Greek. How did it play out after the conquest of the Ottomans who were Turk speakers. Or did it turn into a bilingual situation? Did the Ottomans retain Greek speakers in their court?

1475 when the last medieval Greek Principality of Theodoro fell! 1800 when the first autonomous Greek state (Repubblica Settinsulare Επτάνησος Πολιτεία) formed. Exactly 325 years the Greek world fell under the tyrranical occupation of the Turks.
