There is nothing quite like a black Gospel choir it's inspiring for sure

I’m curious about the photo of the choir that would sing for Lincoln..these are supposedly refugees/contraband of war- yet all of them are holding choir books - am I to assume that all of them could read/understand words from a choir book since most Black slaves could not read at that time?
