In Australia, New Zealand, USA as well as Europe. AJ Foyt was a winner. A true professional. Midgets, Sprintcars, Stock Cars, Indianapolis 500 winner 4 times; Le Mans winner in '67 with Dan Gurney.
Oh the deft race craft of this man. Bigger than freakin’ life. What didn’t he win in? And despite a few lapses in self control in his long and esteemed career, he is a very good man. I for one embrace his propensity to be a bit grouchy. It’s AJ.
In Australia is quite true. Foyt won the 1975 and 1976 Australian Speedcar Grand Prix in Sydney (midget's are called speedcar's down under). He was dubbed the "Legend in the Lawn Mower" by the Aussie press because his car, like most of the field actually, was powered by a 4 cyl VW motor. But he gave the locals a lesson in driving a midget on a quarter mile asphalt speedway.
Had the absolute pleasure of meeting AJ at liverpool speedway as a schoolboy with my dad, it was a weekday and kind of a press event dad crewed for george tatnell who was present and lent his scat powered midget to the late dale buggins to crack a few laps,, trully a memorable day.
A pure POS I always dispised that always blamed others for the problems. At indy one his car ran out fuel and blamed the IT guy and smashed the laptop. Has a very bad temper, very bad sportsmanship.
