ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

Aww, bless little Robbie! But I must ask you Cammy, about Lizzy...how is it that she manages a sheep farm, takes care of you AND her wee one and still looks so magnificent? I wish that I were still that young so's I could look half as tired - but just as beautiful as she does! Much love to you!

Robbie is such a lovely boy. Your little "interview" with him and your quips had me smiling. Robbie is at that transitional age, of losing his childish nature to becoming a young boy. It was delightful to watch.

You and Lizzy really impress me by your talents in problem solving your ewes bestow upon you. When the ewe won't accept her lamb you put her in a stock; when you rub a lamb with the birth fluids to make it acceptable to a different mother, I could go on but you get the drift I'm sure. Your young friend Robert is quite the charmer. I would like to know what he likes doing the best and what are his plans for the future. Perhaps you could chat with him a bit more. That system looks like it’s even simpler to use than the Galiger system like Sandi uses and without the need for that large tablet unit. With the Herdwatch program I think I heard someone else say that once saved the data can be accessed from any device with the app & your login info. Which would be fantastic. As all you would need in the fields/barn would be your phone yet you can easily use an IPad or laptop in your home/office to plan breeding groups & look at data more in-depth. Also seems like the HerdWatch scanner is more sensitive & longer than the Galiger one Sandi uses which is always good. Although the HerdWatch scanner wand doesn’t look extremely sturdy…but I could be wrong🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s just nice to see more technology being made affordable for regular farmers. I know Sandi said the system & main unit she uses was really expensive. So if HerdWatch can deliver equal or better as far as function, ease of use & reliability at a fraction of the price that is amazing. Which should be the case from a tech standpoint since HerdWatch is app based.

First off I am not a farmer nor do I have any particular knowledge except what I have learnt through RU-vid. I wonder if the HerdWatch has been developed to be a more flexible ststem more suited for the Outdoor Farmer? The Gallger System Sandi Brock uses is most likely the best system at the time for her to record her Indoor herd. Like everything else technology is always advancing, but once you have a system in place, unless you can review the product, I think you are more likely to keep the one you have until it needs to be updated & / or replaced,

I wonder if Sandi’s Gallagher just hasn’t been updated (by her) and they’ve got a smaller wand and apps on the cellphone. I’ve often wondered this. I’ve always thought there should just be a small reader that hangs in the race and automatically registers each sheep that comes through.

I've always tagged right ear ram, left ear ewe; then I can tell at a glance the gender when sorting lambs for weaning, etc. Robbie's priceless, great that he gets to help with lambing and that you two can share a joke. Katie's lovely with her crook and flock (definitely frame worthy) and Jake's so proud of his lamb, really enjoy the young shepherd photos their families share with you.

Love seeing the shed, Lizzie is just an amazing woman last year I’m sure she was pregnant and that was my first year watching but how she is this year she just jumps straight in at the deep end and dealing with little Jock is just amazing! Total respect to her. Little Robbie is great too I don’t know many people can say they’ve helped new life into the world at such a tender age well done young man, happy belated birthday to him sounds like he had a great day xxx

Glad to seen you're getting some rest sleep n feeling better. You have such a strong soul mate there in Mrs Cammie. Glad to see she's strong enough to hold her own with u and that you listen to her. Beautiful scene there at the end of the day, those 2 new Cheviots fresh out of the oven with the afterbirth still fresh on the bum. The ewe tight on her babies talking n feeding them with those newborn tails awiggling. Nothing you could do for that Jabobs. Too often the 2nd twin is just in the womb too long while she's pumping out the first. Umbilical breaks from #1 kicking. Oxygen starvation damages #2s brain even before it starts down the birth canal. We aren't gods, some cannot be saved Cammy That sheep app is going to pay for itself just in ewes that reject lambs n weeding those genetics out of the flocks. Saves all that orphan bummer lamb labor Never seen a bummer bucket lamb amount to much money profit wise

How cute is Robbie! An absolute joy to watch! This will be wee Jock in the future! Such a great lifestyle for the kids as well as you and Lizzie. If I lived in Scotland I’d come and rear all your pet lambs! LOL Perhaps as the channel grows you can get an automatic feeder, like Sandi’s. Apart from the cost of the unit itself and the milk replacer there is a large cost (labour) in teaching the lamb to drink.

Lucky to have a great lambing crew. You need a harness with a scabbard (like for a broadsword ) that you can wear on your back for carrying your scan wand hands free while on the bike. Stay safe from Canada 🇨🇦

Excellent Cammy I tend my sheep then dash in to watch how you got on each day. You are 5 hrs ahead of us. The Herd Watch looks good for all record keeping. Would be especially helpful for pedigree flocks. I think you won the lottery with Lizzie. Keep on sheepin’ the highs will outweigh the lows in the long run.

The Flock Watch gadget, app, and software looks amazing! Collecting data on your breeding ewes can help you make better decisions for the future of your flock. Sandy Brock’s Gallagher system does something similar, and it’s made a big difference.

Your new toy is an amazing piece of technology.... should make record keeping much easier. Your flock has gotten bigger since I started watching, so it only stands to reason there would be more situations that would come up.... that are not ideal. Overall, it seems like it's going pretty well.

Hi Cammie from MI, USA! Have ? U said in vlog that there r lots of pet lambs & milk replacer is expensive. Why don't you use a Udder Milker like Sandi Brock uses to milk out ewes w/singles or ewes that lost lambs? It's very easy to operate & not costly. Just a thought.

Love that you were able to get a quad, saves the legs, more efficient and sooo well timed to be helpful when you weren’t feeling well. So neat to see Meg behind you…or the random sheep on the mat. Also cool you’ve got new tracking tech to help manage the flock and $s. The sunny mornings, though cold, are glorious to see fields full of babies.

When you were doing the flockwatch you rolled over a good suggestion for the developers by accident, if you were to add the lamb to the ewe it the app should be able to pull it from the batch or use the same number without duplicating your data right? As in, it should be able to have the lamb in the batch AND linked to the scotch mule as its mother.

Yeah I think it would do that but you would need to scan them individually and link them to the mum? Which would take a lot of time and we’re just a bit short of time to use it to it’s full capacity. 😅

Flock watch is great I wonder if they are pushing it, as UK government is trying to treat sheep the same as cattle and expect you to record the ewe and sire of every lamb. They have failed to get it through into law but think it will be hard to do especially if you put 2 or more tups at the same time then another to sweep if any ewes are missed

Love the videos Cammy, Moved from the west of Ireland to Perth Australia in the last 2 weeks, the videos make me feel like I’m still at home. How do you tag the lambs that are lambed outside? or is that a bigger job down the line when you gather them all? Do you ever consider bringing the last ewes left into the shed to lamb now the numbers are going down?

Cheers Phil. You don’t have to tag the lambs for a while as long as you’re not moving them. It would be too difficult to seperate the in lamb ewes to bring them in now but i’d love to!

It's good to see Lizzie is getting more comfortable in front of the camera and not shying away as much anymore. Also Cammy what do you do with the bodies of the dead lambs? Obviously you skin some to help with bonding to ewes but what happens to the rest that aren't needed? Do you send them to a veterinary college for students to study, given to the dogs or do they just get disposed of some other way?

Most farmers dig a pit in a field corner near the farm. Bury and cover in a depth of soil to deter being dug up by fox or badger. A few will be donated to vet schools but most of these establishments have their own flock on site for training needs. Too expensive to pay for commercial uplift and disposal.
