So sorry to hear that you had lost a lot of your orchids in 2017 due to hurricanes I'm happy you are okay. I'm glad you were able to rebuild your garden. I plant a lot of mine in pots so that I can move them or put them on the side when we have a hurricane threat. Perhaps you could think about doing that as well. I find that the loss is much less. The river rocks are such a genius media. I use lava rock as my medium with fertilizer. It rains often her in my tropical area. I live near a small creek. Thank you for the tips. My charcoal aqre burnt coconut shells. My major issue is the exposure to the blazing sun and then pouring rain. So I will leave them in a semi shaded area. Thank you.

Hey Nicole, I'm so happy that you love my garden and that you find my videos helpful. Outside of the beautiful blooms, I love to add a little ed. to it. Dendrobium orchids depending on how fast they dry out and where you have them, they can be watered sometimes every day. I mostly water every other day though during the hot and dry season the ones I have indoor or in the greenhouse. Good to have you from Trinny. (Trinny accent) Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hello Jan, thank you so much for stopping by from Barbados. I really do not use any special brand of NPK I buy based on what is available. I sometimes uses the Evergrow brand which is manufactured locally or Fersan brand. Can you give more detail regarding what is in your dendrobium medium & proportions please. I understand you said use pebbles & charcoal.

Hello Sylvia, the charcoal is not a must and so I mostly plant the in the stones (pebbles) alone. Therefore, the proportion is not critical. Frequent watering is important for them.

Orchid Doc I'm new to dendrobium care so I really appreciate this video. Do I notice this covering that is on the canes. Do I strip them off? I must admit that I do pick them off when it's loose and comes off easily. Do u move them indoors during the periods when we r experiencing a tropical trough? I realize that phals do not like too much rain. My flowers became spotted and fell off and circular blisters came up on the leaves. My research says that this is due to overwatering (too much rain). They r now n my verandah. However I left the dendrobium outside.

Hey Diana, Ok I see. Yes I notice that sheathing on the the Dendrobium canes. No I do not remove it, I really don't think it matters much only for aesthetics. For sure the Phalaenopsis and most orchids do not appreciate overwatering as they tend to get root or crown rot. In the past I would take my orchids indoor if we expect a storm. Nowadays though base on the amount of orchids I have, it's difficult to take them all inside and so I just place them low and give them a good dosing of fungicide. I pray we don't get any storms this year as it can really be difficult to mange the plants during those moments. Are you in Jamaica?

@@growingorchidsinjamaica Yes I live in western Jamaica on the windward slope of the mountains . Oh I was watching another video of urs on our local orchids. I'm pleased to announce that for a month now I've had in my possession the ionopsis orchid that u found while on tour. They r blooming and sending out new fans. I'm so so happy with my find. I've them in net pots and then placed them loosely in airy containers with a media of charcoal, coconut coir and a few barks. They seem well so far. Thanks again for everything and Happy gardening!

After potting or repotting your Dens, do you place them and grow them in an area that is sheltered from the sun and rain, a Greenhouse or a shadehouse

Hello Alicia, yes after potting my Dens I actually place them in my sheltered greenhouse where it literally will only be watered by me and the area also gets filtered sunlight until they become established. Happy growing friend 💖😎🌴

Hey Barbara, thank you for watching. I like to use a systemic insecticide as it takes care of a broad array of insects. I use Caprid as I think it is very effective. Of importance though, only use when necessary or if using as a protectant remember to rotate with other insecticides to prevent insect resistance. Happy Easter!!

I cut some branches with roots- plant in another pot or hang on the tree. Dendrobium is easy care from summer thru winter . Blooming flowers in April or May .

Hello Madge, yes it is 3% undiluted hydrogen peroxide. If if is of a higher strength the you would have to dilute.

Good day i was given two keikis with roots i set them in coal and stone but the roots rotted and i cut them off how can they be repotted

Hey Janet, Go ahead and repot, however you may have to stake them to keep them from shifting since you had to remove the old roots. Please check the canes though to ensure that they are still firm and not turning brown. We are now in Spring and so one they are still fine, they should start sending out new roots pretty soon. Ensure that they dry out in between watering. Use a high phosphorous fertilizer weekly and this will help to promote roots. Please keep me updated with their progress. Happy growing.
