A Journey Through Swaledale: Tan Hill to Reeth

With an industrial heritage of coal and lead mining, Swaledale sits at the northwest tip of the Yorkshire Dales. With no disrespect to the other Dales, it is my particular favourite dale, with its steep sided serene grandeur, dotted with stone barns, topped with moorland and filled with Swaledale sheep. Its patchwork fields are crisscrossed by an abundance of dry-stone walls, with wildflower meadows, huddles of stone cottages and, running through it all, there is the ever-present River Swale.
We begin our journey at England’s highest pub The Tan Hill. We continue through Swaledale’s collection of villages: Keld, Thwaite, Muker, Gunnerside, Low Row and Reeth. We then take a detour up into Arkengarthdale, dropping down to the water splash featured in the opening credits of the original version of All Creatures Great and Small, before returning across the tops to Swaledale and Reeth.
Music: All Creatures Great and Small by Alexandra Harwood
Florida Suite: II. By the River by Delius - a Yorkshire chap
In The Yorkshire Dales by Tim Thorpe, Paul Arden-Taylor, Jonathan Burgess
Swaledale Air by Fourum
Bouquet de Paris and Pull For The Shore played by the Muker Silver Band
Concierto de Aranjuez: II. Adagio played by The Grimethorpe Colliery Band
All Creatures Great and Small played by David Moore
From Yorkshire Landscapes by MA Ward

The Adagio played by Grimethorpe Colliery Band reminds me of the film 'Brassed Off'; devastation by structural unemployment.

Fancy you going past that hotel and seeing that happy chappy sitting out front, he looks exactly like someone I know.😄 And again outside the Inn.😄

What a lovely video, it brought back so many nostalgic memories, I was brought up in Richmond but moved away 40 years ago, I haven’t been back since and it’s good to see nothing much has changed Oop Dales . I particularly enjoyed the Delius at the start( I’m a professional violinist in an orchestra). The water splash/ ford has particular meaning as my parents regularly had picnics with me and my sister up there on Sunday afternoons in the summer. After seeing your video I now have a real itch to come back home and visit wonderful Swaledale. Thank you

What a lovely message - thank you. And I'm pleased you liked the music - as long as copyright issues allow, I prefer to use classical music to back my videos, especially if there is a connection between the music and the images (wasn't Delius a Yorkshire chap?). No lousy rackets for me! The Dales (and Swaledale in particular) mean a great deal to me - in my childhood I used to go on holiday up there regularly with my parents. A glorious part of the world and I hope you get to return.

Now the driver has to pay attention to the road, so cannot take in so much. But if someone has been filming, the detail can be enjoyed at leisure.

The watersplash featured on the opening credits of the original series of All Creatures Great and Small, broadcast in the 70s and 80s. Accessed via Arkengarthdale Road out of Reeth. There's a turning to the left on that road between Langthwaite and the CB Inn signposted "Low Row 3". It's along there.
