A Lean, Mean, Green, Driving Machine: Caterham Seven 420R Review
The Caterham Seven 620R is the model that everyone remembers. That's because it has a crazy amount of power, thanks to a supercharger, plus it's also as race-orientated as possible. However, there's a model below it, which is a bit of an unsung hero.
Sure, it doesn't have the supercharger that makes the 620 so unhinged, but it does share the same 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine, in a naturally aspirated format of course. It pumps out 210bhp and 203Nm of torque, which may not sound like much, but thanks to a kerb weight of just 585kg, this car will hit 60mph in just 3.8 seconds, before continuing to a top speed of 136mph.

I just love how you're easily able to transport your enthusiasm for this car straight through the internet into my brain ^^ Having fun in a car doesnt automatically mean that you have to have thousands of bhp or the perfect cornering machine. As soon as there's a connection between the driver and the road, having fun whilst driving is natural! Thats something only very few car makers are able to do these days.

Nice review, like everyone else it would be nice to own a Caterham. The reason the gearbox is so good is because the shifter mechanism and lever is directly out of the gearbox. I would most likely opt for a 360s or 420s but add the LSD, sport roll cage, full harness, carbon leather seats, boot cover, updated brake master Cylinder, LED headlights and battery cut off switch. BRG paint with carbon two stripe bonnet strips with yellow coach stripes. For now I can only dream.

Thanks for the effort of securing the opportunity to review the car. The power and theatre of this car did not come across at all though - it sounded like you were in 5th gear at 30 mph for 90% of the time😉

I just committed to a 430r and yes even keeping the add-ons to a minimum still over 47K but man oh man!!

Can you please comment on how low the car actually is and how that impacts the drive-ability on UK roads? Also, Caterham offers a "Lowered floors" option for £ 495.00, do you think that is a good or bad option to have? Thanks.

The car is very low, and as such you will want to avoid speed humps, which makes UK driving...interesting. Thankfully, my route to work features no speed humps, otherwise I would have been a bit stuffed! Lowered floor is a good option of you are taller - I believe the car featured in this video had the lowered floor. Hope this helps, thanks for watching, Joseph.
