This is it, take the kick, break it down to all of its smaller components, and develop them until the kick is second nature. This is the great thing about Karate or the martial arts as a whole, there is always more improvement to squeeze out of the basics. Thanks for your comment and for watching 👍

Throwing the kick from that kneeling position is a great exercise to build up the muscles around the hips for kicking, and very challenging. I can't believe how fast you can do it! I need to work on that 😅 Thanks for the excellent tips

Thank you Sensei for this lesson on Mae Geri, it was very helpful, I'll definitely be putting your teachings, tips and drills into practice when I'm training my front kick. I joined a JKA club at the start of the year and as a new Karate practitioner I'm still getting to grips with how to move around in Kumite. It would be very much appreciated if you could make a video teaching footwork and movement within Kumite specifically.

@@jkgardiner john 0:30 what is the reason than the leg needs to still bent ?
@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 2 месяца назад
@slingshotshooter7536 because the power is gone if you connect with a straight leg, the foot is still accelerating forwards in the middle of the kick. The connection happens during the delivery of techniques, not the end point.

Kicking from the sitting position is very interesting because you are on the ground but you are actually standing. That may be a “surprise”position to take when facing a thrower (Judokas, Wrestlers) or a ground grappler. You’re rather low for a thrower and rather ready to stand up for a ground grappler. It might be worth exploring possible applications. 👍

Dear Sir, Excellent methodology, yet difference between snap kick and pushed kick has to be dealt with togerther with and without hip push could have been emphasized. Otherwise, it helps much to see that in each phase of the kick there is something to improve.. Happy New Year, 2024,Paul,68, retired instructor of Karate OK.

A LESSON ON MAE GERI - FRONT KICK
@illuminateyourmind
@illuminateyourmind 4 месяца назад
The function of the hips and projecting them forwards is to generate more linear power. It shouldn’t fundamentally change the path of the kick. It means the technique is wrong if so.
@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 4 месяца назад
I'm not sure what part of the video is in reference to but yes the hips should always be used in the way you described (and how I did in the video)
@illuminateyourmind
@illuminateyourmind 4 месяца назад
@@jkgardiner at around -5:15. To me, if the knee is lifted correctly and the action of the foot is correct, the kick should still have a forwards path, and not skim the bag on an upward trajectory.

Looks good, but stop taking the small step with the front foot at the start of the kick, it telegraphs the kick. This was my favourite kick for forty years.
@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 6 месяцев назад
I don't always do that, it depends on distance, but you are right it can telegraph it.
@edwardforbes3469
@edwardforbes3469 6 месяцев назад
A slightly longer step works well with a simultaneous punch when you need to cut distance - gets you closer while moving opponent's guard up, and let's you load the hip even more. Kizami if you want to keep hip open before the kick, gyaku if you want to start turning the hip early. Good video.
@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 6 месяцев назад
@edwardforbes3469 I actually made a short video on that exact set up last year some time, disguising the step with a punch. 👍🥋

This should be taught to white belts! Almost sad that this nuanced yet foundational part of technique is omitted or glossed over at many dojos. That hip movement is what makes the difference.

@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 5 месяцев назад
You don't need a guard up all the time
@ljubisaspasojevic1066
@ljubisaspasojevic1066 5 месяцев назад
@@jkgardiner On the contrary you must hold the guard all the time, otherwise you will adopt the bad habit which will backfire to your head and body in the competition or in the street. This is the most common and the most dangerous mistake. When I was the coach of the national karate team that was my first task, to erase that mistake which all members of the team had. Anyhow there is an vey simple exercise which will remove this mistake. Take four tennis balls or similar (like onions )and put each of them into your arm and shoulder pits . Perform kicks. When not any of them falls down the mistake is gone. Also it is very important that every moove starts from tanden.
@jkgardiner
@jkgardiner 5 месяцев назад
@ljubisaspasojevic1066 kicking should be a full body action. Restricting the arms to holding a guard removes the upper body from the kick. In the same way the arms are used in running. If I'm throwing a front kick a middle level guard is fine. If I'm throwing a kick then I shouldn't be in punching distance to need a high guard. High guard when in close but outside of that distance it isn't as necessary. You are obviously welcome to your own opinion though, this is just mine.
@ljubisaspasojevic1066
@ljubisaspasojevic1066 5 месяцев назад
@@jkgardiner Measure the length of your arm and your leg. You will see that the leg is only 10-15 centimetres longer. That is the main reason of punching knock outs after opponents without guard kick attacks. Prooved so many times.
