Hey JP! I’ve raised 4 kids and payed off a mortgage in my life in Canadian music! That’s success in Canada! I’m still playing, and now building guitars, at 65! I love Ricks channel - but he IS an “industry” guy! Peace

I agree on a lot of things being said here. Something that really cracks me up is when guys come up to me at shows and they reveal that they have written some really good songs but they won’t release them because of piracy on the internet or some crap… I’ve had Nashville acquaintances who railed about how internet piracy was costing them a career in the industry and I just laughed back then… Today I find that people “stealing” music is not what is holding artists back so much as them not having the balls to go out and unapologetically making something amazing. As for The Eagles? Those guys can eat a bag of… Well Henley can anyway! I think what I’m far more upset about here in the states has been BMI and ASCAP who are supposed to be looking out for the artist have been flying goons first class around the country to go shake down tiny coffee houses that hold 20 people in them over their open mic night allowing covers… Beating up tiny little venues who already barely make money because they don’t even sell beer has done more damage to young up and coming artists just trying to get a little stage time than most people would ever know, far more than piracy ever did.

Thanks JP for your 40 years of insight and k..nowledge! It sounds like your not up to speed on streaming music quality and how to achieve great sound on a 2 channel system. With a good quality streamer and dac into a great amp and speakers it's actually magical! Come on up to Ingonish Beach to our B&B in the next couple days for the fall colours and have a listen! The Island Inn, we got a cottage for ya and a kinda old yamaha guitar for you to play in the dining room!!!!! We'll even get you and Ginger up the new gondola at Cape Smokie ski hill. Cheers!

Wish I could hit the like button 100 times...! You've said what I've been thinking for a long while, now. Oh, and yes, I've been watching Beato for a couple years or more; I may not like much of the same music as he does, but his depth of musical knowledge runs deep. And yeah, like you, he's cool.... 🙃

Oh wow, you are a music soulmate..lol. Dedicated to live music all my life. I am a female product of the 60s and 70s folk era. I am a singer songwriter/ guitarist who love Emmylou, Joan Baez, and others. I have enjoyed my music and have no regrets. I have had many bands and love fellow musicians. I now play alone always looking for others who always have done it for the comraderie and the song. Great video. Love your work. God Bless

Hey JP, great show today. I watch Rick too. His “What Makes this Song Great” is an amazing analysis that the lay ear would otherwise never hear. I believe Henley and the classic rock/ pop guys are old school copyright law. I think Jimmy Page is the same. Please don’t end this show!

Watched your entire rant, JP. Thanks. As for Rick Beato, I'm a casual fan - mostly love his communication skills with the theory. But one thing people don't know about him is that he was a struggling jazz guitarist for a very long time. He had to make the (probably heartbreaking) decision give up persuing his craft professionally because he just wasn't making it. So after what I gather was at least a decade immersed in Jazz, in complete isolation from any pop music, he decided to start producing pop albums. And here's where you and I and everyone on youtube gained from all his schooling/training/struggle. He had heard zero pop/rock/soul etc while on his forray into Jazz. When he came back to produce, he turned that incredible wealth of knowledge and understanding (esp. of theory) onto the rock albums he knew from the past and on the pop music of the day. Instead of maintaining a sort of superiority complex about jazz, he found that rock and pop, though less complex, was not less important nor less noteworthy. That's the excitement you see when he talks about what makes a song great. He really fell in love with music at that point. I'm sure he thought he loved it before. But loving a woman at 20 is much different than loving her in your middle age. Thanks again for your rant. I hope more people will hear it and learn from it. You're right on the money about the greed of artists or their representatives in either demonetizating or removing videos. Myopia Supreme. You called it. They are choking out their own legacy. A great example is Jimi Hendrix. His estate has so poorly mismanaged his catalog on top of aggressivity getting videos pulled down, that they've effectively erased Jimi from the future. Legacy buried. Literally not a human being alive under 30 years old even knows who the man is. Imagine that. And all because those in charge of his catalog are so behind in the times that they mistook free advertising for intellectual property theft - and somehow manage to retain employment despite their obvious lack of understanding of what's probably the most important and powerful tools one has for self promotion. In history.

*THIS COMMENT IS WAY TOO LONG. BUT IT’S AS SHORT AS I COULD MAKE IT. NO ONE IS UNDER ANY PRESSURE TO READ IT!* Beato is a former industry guy and hates the industry as it stands. His quandary, or better, his mission, seems to be trying to find ways to make it possible to accomplish the two things that the former “record industry” was actually good at. (1) make new music artists readily discoverable through promotion and (2) make possible the ability to make being a musician a *real* job. Here’s the problem. Artists still must be able to focus on writing good music and growing as artists. But nowadays, artists have to split their time wearing too many hats. They still have to write, perform, tour, and rehearse so they don’t get rusty - just like they used to. Plus, now they also have to go through the mystical process of recording, possess the personality to self-promote, and negotiate the myriad paths of distribution - by themselves. The time spent figuring out Pro Tools and putting together some approximation of a studio (and that’s a lot of damn time… and money) is time not spent on honing their skills as musicians, songwriters, and performers. The recording and business aspects are things that artists, generally speaking, suck at and shouldn’t have to deal with. This is a fact. I watch Mr. Beato’s RU-vid channel regularly; I greatly enjoy it. But right now he’s got this ongoing series on trying to figure out why pop music these day is so bad. What *I* can’t figure out is what the big mystery is. To my mind, there’s no big mystery at all! It’s obvious! Comparing the music of today to the music of the 1960’s, ‘70s, ‘80s, or even the 90s, is ridiculous - a “fool’s errand”. Pointing to the likes of Paul McCartney - with or without the bands he used to be in _(correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure one of them was called “The Beatles”?)_ as being some kind of standard is just silly. As great as The Beatles’ canon is, whenever any one of the four has been asked to explain their success, each of them has the answer; Brian Epstein. Yes, of course they knew how great they were. They were keenly aware of that. But when they gave that answer they were serious as hell. They weren’t being dodgy about it. To this day, McCartney still says that he knows they were the best band out there, but without Epstein’s ability to get them in front of the right people, the music alone wasn’t going to be enough. He is very open about their own ineptitude where promotion and the business end of the thing was concerned.

Hey JP, I've seen those Rick Beato videos and he says that Henley has a team of over 60 PEOPLE that monitor the internet daily for "copyright infringement"! How obscene is it that he can afford to pay that many people to take down videos that can actually make MORE money for him and extend and perpetuate the life of the songs! I love the Eagles but this is a "less than desirable" move that tarnishes his legacy.

Interesting program today JP. You touched a little on what makes the world tick and brings success to entrepreneurs. That is the customer. The customer, not the artist or the inventor makes for financial success. I have a dislike for most entertainers as they think customers were created by them not the other way around. Give the customer a good product and the maker will do well. However, the customer has to have the means to spend and if the economy is doing well, the customer will spend excess resources on entertainment. If most customers are poor or the economy is depressed, inventors and entertainers will go hungry. What peeves me off is the entertainers who were made wealthy by customers, spends a lot of their spare time trying to put customers out of work! Now I listen to Rick and Joe Chambers who give us great insight into the life of entertainers and being retired i have the time to be entertained about entertainers. Some really talented people musically. It’s important, I think, that entertainers recognize that they are a part of what makes the world go round, not the reason the world goes round. I enjoy your work, you are very talented and seem happy to have found a grove that works well for you.

11:49 It's funny that Rick Beato did a "What Makes This Song Great" on Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" but didn't mention the lawsuit... I have been bugging him in the comments to do a comparison. Another one lately is Joe Satriani vs Coldplay (settled out of court). This video is gold! I'm also a big Rick Beato fan (and just took a brief Udemy course on songwriting)

I've been watching and following Rick for a long time now... even before I found your channel, which is also great. Rick says in a recent video that Mike Dawes is one of the finest acoustic guitarists around (he can't think of anyone better). You said in one video (if I remember correctly), "It's not about who is the best guitarist around... Tommy Emmanuel is, so let's get that out of the way." Those two comments pretty much illustrates the difference between your opinion and Rick's. I have to admit I haven't heard of Mike Dawes and I've seen Tommy many times in the past. Both are great at what they do. I, personally, really, really like David Russell myself, but that's another story. Tommy told me once that the classical guitarists like John Williams and David Russel are the "true" masters of the guitar. Goes to show that all you, great guitarists in your own right, are modest and gracious enough to recognize the talent all around. BTW - your flat picking is outrageous!

Sweet Jesus what are you talking about, "there's never going to be another" the future of new fresh music is endless. I am nearly seventy and I hear new artist who I think are absolutely amazing, and I have probably listened years, not endless hours of music. This is certainly one point I disagree with you strongly. Cheers, I do enjoy content that gives me serious disagreement.
