The biggest flaw with ALH is the anxiety it creates from making you want the followup immediately, and the knowing that you have a full year to go. It's a pretty big flaw. Abercrombie's books really do it for me in a way nothing else comes close to. He makes creating amazing, fleshed out characters seem effortless. Like I was fully on board with Savine and Orso before their first chapters ended. They're so naive and flawed in a way that rings true and still has you rooting for them.

Don't skip the audio book if you are going to do a reread. If Steven Pacey and Joe Abercrombie teamed up for a cookbook I would buy it (it would probably be filled with recipes for cooking people). I did read on his blog, "It’s been 7 years since my last novel in the First Law world, so thanks for your patience. Hopefully it will be richly rewarded, for The Age of Madness trilogy will continue in regular instalments (honest) with The Trouble with Peace in September 2020 and The Beautiful Machine in September 2021." :)

I loved this book, like you I was a little weary going in that the new cast wouldn’t live up to the old or would be too similar, but I shouldn’t have doubted Him. I always have this weird mixed feeling when I character I love comes back into the story, part of me is excited that I get to spend more time with them and part of me is terrified about what Joe might do to them!

Just finished this book and I really enjoyed it! I haven't read any of First Law before this but the idea of a fantasy world moving into an industrialized one really peaked my interest. Also all the glowing reviews made me want to start it asap. My to read list is out of control so I didn't want to put 6 other books in front of this one (I know they are great). I read a brief summary of characters and plot just so I had SOME background before A Little Hatred (knowing I wouldn't get all the details), but you really sold me on going back when my book pile is a little smaller and reading all the "prequels".

Hi Liene, Thank you for a video I can share with people who are stuck on the Tolkien/Martin - no other fantasy is good - hype train. Thought: can A Little Hatred be read first or do non Joe readers need the backstory? I feel, that this is the free shot of heroin that will make you dig into the past. I've read them all and I feel a new reader starting with this trilogy, will hear about the heroes and named men of the past and naturally want to listen to the Skald named Joe sing their tales. 2. Most of my friends are quasi-readers and lit comes to them through Audible, which I'm cool with, but the latest series has to be devoured on the page because...the words work. First book I've ever read that I needed a highlighter to mark up every word that Clover shits out. Plus other characters of course, but Clover....my god (won't spoil stuff...but my god) I know my comments don't make much sense, just like your video, because this latest trilogy (half way through book two) leaves me speechless, or gushing like a school girl. Like you so eloquently stated, the best way to describe this novel is "fuck".

Joe Abercrombie renewed my joy for fantasy, after years of not connecting with so many of the popular series and instead of trying to read "Deadhouse Gates" for the third time, I gave the "First Law" a chance and after a few chapters, I was spellbound. SO nice to finally be completely captivated by a book series again. I usually listen to audiobook while I draw, but half way through the series I switch to book form because I had to keep reading while on the go. That said Steven Pacey goes a masterful job of acting out the characters and helped my dumbass with pronouncing and remembering all the names(Glokta is my main man). Only problem is I ran out of books! Also great review Liene, I will check out some of your other videos :)

I started out on Abercrombie reading Sharp Ends (because I like to get to know new authors through their short stories). Just finished the first trilogy, and HOLY SHIT, that blew my mind! Haven't read any of the standalone books yet. As a sword-and-sorcery author, being no slouch at it if I do say so myself, Abercrombie's by far blown my mind more than anyone since first reading Robert E. Howard (the great-granddaddy of it all). Abercrombie's blown my mind like, "Holy Shit, you can DO THAT with this genre?" and has inspired me to up my game.

But wow, he'll have a kid, so he's got to make this kid with someone, witch means he's gonna have some kind of a love story ? Spoilers****** “Symphony of cynicism” -perfection I’m going to fanboi out a bit here so I’m going a little long. Apologies in advance. BSC is my fav as well and continues to be. I loved ALH. I also started a reread after finishing it and I’m in the middle of BTAH currently. I really hope his plan going forward is to tie all the major players from all the previous books together into this on in some form. Especially if he plans on this being the last FL trilogy #TeamShenkt He’s moving the world forward excellently as I expected. He has the perfect base to do so being these books are so character centric and JA is maybe the best character writer I know of. I loved the ending as much as I was bummed to see Jezal go. I really liked the little bit of mature Jezal we got and the mirroring of Savine’s pov of her noticing Jezal’s treatment of her (because he knows she’s his daughter) was just similar enough to Jezal noticing the King’s ogling of him in TBI but also not knowing why. The circle of the ignorant bastards. I also loved the different perspectives between how Jezal warned Orso compared to Glotka warning Savine about Bayaz. Side note: “The Little People” chapter itself is a tour de force and my go-to now to sell JA to newbies. I really love how he has evolved these epic perspective switching chapters since The Heroes. I could drone on and on but I’ve already went embarrassingly long. I’ve successfully defeated the urge to theorize and I’m proud of that. Have a good day and keep up the good work championing the most underrated author of our time.

Yeah, you got me. I loved the first law stuff, but i was worried about this new setting. Your enthusiasm convinced me to just get the damn thing already. I just finished all of the Riyria books (which were great btw) and was in a sort of slump wondering what to read next. Then i saw JA had a new book out. I hope this book is as gritty and just plain awesome like the rest. If not, I guess I can hold you personally responsible. Thanks for the review! PS. I also freakin' love Glokta. What a wonderfully complicated character. He has done some terrible shit for sure. But still you have sympathy for the man because of what he had to endure and because he needed to find some way to keep himself useful in the very unforgiving world in which these books are set. And let's face it. Nobody in these books are angels. Everyone is playing an angle. I kinda hope we hear from Shivers in this one as well, but I'll keep my expectations down so I'm not too disappointed if he doesn't show up in any way.

I have to say, I'm sadly a little bit disappointed in the direction a little hatred has taken. The book itself is well written and among my absolute favorite books, however. I was hoping to read more about for ex, Khalul (what is he up to now that the great battle was lost) Ferro (where the bloody hell did she go? did she ever get pregnant with you know whose child?) What have all the magi been doing since (or even before)? Furthermore by now I had hoped to learn more about how the magic worked in more detail (perhaps following other apprentices and their learning or whats cooking on the other side) that sort of thing..
@irockmajorly

Ferro's fate is heavily hinted at in the book, and I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw her. Its implied that she confronted khalul and possibly defeated him.

No idea how that happened but it was pretty cool learning about the legend of the bloody nine before having him as a POV character. The heroes especially though was way better with context to back it up. Ok, watched it. Insightful, passionate review1 Couldn't agree more about it being the new favorite; one of the things I found fascinating from a prose standpoint is how he utilized a lot of the methods he developed over the course of the OG First Law trilogy and the stand-alones! That chapter in Valbeck, "The Little People" had a similar method of transitioning from "minor" character viewpoints as a means to convey the scale of a massive scene from various, unique perspectives ala "The Heroes" was the standout for me, but only by the slimmest of margins. Re-read it two more times after I finished the first run, and have been back into marathoning the audiobooks since then. Sidenote: Steven Pacey reading Joe Abercrombie is one of my life's great joys.
