Spatial imaging has been embraced as an exquisite tool for looking at various aspects of cellular behavior and disease activity, but it’s still a very young technology. How did it go from ‘heroic experiment’ to a must-have tool for a wide range of applications in a variety of labs? Peter Miller, Akoya’s vice president of research and development, walks us through the evolution of single-cell spatial biology tools, from the Polaris and PhenoImager® HT in 2019 to the PhenoCycler®-Fusion 2.0. He discusses the primary pressures that have prompted changes to instrument fluidics, imaging, data size and processing, as well as workflow speed and simplicity. Much of it has been driven by user needs, including economies of time, cost and scale, and the ability to ask more complicated questions on a routine basis. Miller also addresses the future evolution of the technology and what will be required to bring spatial biology into the clinic: a truly translational system, with simple, robust and practical high-throughput solutions that place operational considerations as paramount.
