Carey Price's contract is interesting to discuss. It illustrates how having the guy signed into his late 30s doesn't mean he will play his entire contract...

It's all a gamble, but as you said, GM's would rather have some reasonable long term clarity about how much money they have. If the guy that you signed for a 8 million cap hit blows out a knee and never plays again, you have to find people to fill the hole. If the guy that you signed for a 8 million cap hit crushes it for 6 years and gets you a Cup, you look brilliant.
@iliaponomarev1624
@iliaponomarev1624 3 дня назад
If an 8M guy blows out a knee and doesn't play anymore, he's just on LTIR, and paid via insurance. I mean, you as a GM would always buy an insurance for such a contract, right? Right??? If an 8M goalie pulls a groin, can play, but never is the same 8M goalie again - then it's a trouble.

Most people in Columbus think Severson is overpaid. Paid like a Top 2 D without the ice time or numbers. He hasn't been bad, but he hasn't been $6mil a year good either. TBF, he played under a horrible coach with terrible D structure last year, so that hurts the +/-, but the amount of times he was out of position or just flat out got beat last year was way too many for someone making his money. I'd be a lot less upset if he was at $4m and Gudbranson was at $6m. Gudy has incredible hustle and tremendous off ice leadership

Who am I to judge what a GM and a player negotiate to? Every year the cap goes up, the ceiling AND the floor, so the contracts will naturally follow. The difference is these days we're all much more aware of what the players are signed to, and we have the internet to discuss them. But the public's perception of the what the market should be will adapt, albeit slower perhaps than the movement of the market itself. Someday we'll be complaining about how a player makes $25 million per season and how another is a steal making only $17 million. The natural progression of linear time is afoot.

Thomas' contract was bargain the day he signed it. No doubt. He's SO underrated playmaker with lethal wrist shot as well. And in my mind no doubt he'll be Blues next captain. Kyrou seemed much more risky. He was seen as a pure goalscorer with little to no versatility in his play. And last season just added to the doubts. But so far this season he's showing much improvement in his overall game that I get the risk by Armstrong.

I assume it’s because nfl contracts are not guaranteed and nhl contracts are. If an nfl player is aging poorly while their salary climbs, the team just cuts them. If an nhl player ages poorly, the team still has to pay, so they structure the deals to be easier to trade in that scenario

I think they should lower the UFA eligibility to 25 years of age and to balance it out in the teams favour they should implement a modified cap hit for players that you resign beyond 25 years to 90% of their AAV. This gives teams that drafted and developed the player the financial edge to resign them which in my opinion they deserve. This change to the salary cap formula would also put larger emphasis on the importance of the draft and the value of draft picks which would make the game more exciting imo. Additionally I would like to see the mazimum term come down to 6 and 7 years. 8 years just seems too long imo.

If you told me Swaggy would fall off after 33-34 I wouldn’t be surprised but Florida doesn’t really care. He leads the franchise in playoff goals and many other playoff categories and they’ll take the first 4-5 years of his deal and worry about the last 3 later.

My first look at Oettinger's contract, I think it might literally be Swayman's contract. Goalies aren't screwing their teams over, like Draisaitl and Verhaeghe are. Shesterkin will screw the Rangers over though, I think. These front-loaded all signing bonus contracts are going to disappear once people see the disasters at the end. The Matthews one is like that too, but he's expiring just before turning 31, so far less risk.

Eichel's contract doesn't prove you can win cup with his specific cap hit. Vegas exploited the no cap in playoffs again. That was a lot of extra cash they could buy talent with . . . and they did. Same with Tampa's one cup. It's technically legal under the CBA, and both are legit cup winners. However, the argument can't be proven incorrect with those circumstances with those teams
@WoozyPolarBear
@WoozyPolarBear 3 дня назад
I am not a fan of 8 year contacts at all. 90% of the time, a GM gives out an 8 year contact, but only receives 5-6 years of value and productive time from the aging players. Cost certainty is great up to the point that you are locked into having to pay top dollars for AHL replaceable level talent. By year 7 or 8, it is equivalent as paying the same amount of money as it would take to lease a 2025 BMW but for a 2018 Toyota Corolla instead.
