I have to say, I find it hilarious that average guys in their basements manage to get a PS1 or Gamecube emulator running on phones , but Sega and atgames can't produce a box that plays Mega Drive games well. I understand a phone costs more, but then the MD is almost 30 years old by now, and I can remember NES emulators running on PCs back in the mid 90s. Lord help them if they ever try and tackle the Saturn.
I think Sega has just been phoning in these things over the years as a quick cash grab. They finally seem to be taking notice that their brands and IP's mean something. Mega Drive Mini will hopefully bare the fruit of that realization.
Sega's ignorance of its own history and intellectual properties is quite criminal. Sega has a list of IPs most companies would kill for, and the fact that most of it is ignored is disappointing.
Obviously things are changing with M2 doing the new genesis mini coming later this year.. best included games library to date also. Can't wait.@@SegaLordX
@@SegaLordX ''And lets not look past bubbles master this ultra fast puzzle game will keep you on the edge of your seat for hours, You will be hard pressed to find a better game on any other system! '' that quote !!! let me hold your beer while you write more.
Loving the Midnight Resistance soundtrack in the background of the opening. One of the very best Genesis soundtracks. Of course there are a lot of great soundtracks from the Genesis including the Streets of Rage series, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe series and others. But for me ultimately there are only a few that are some of my favourites and most of them come from Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage II but Midnight Resistance is amazing.
Of course, helping Sega by buying these AT Games stuff is a good thing, but it could be a lot better for Sega if they did by them selves by their quality standards. why is Sega still associated with this company anyway, knowing that that Feedback for this stuff isnt that great?nevertheless great video Mel
Sega is almost completely a software company at the retail level now, so they need partners for hardware releases like this. The feedback from this device seems to have taken hold, as it seems Sega has put M2 on the job for the Mega Drive Mini.
It is NOT a good thing buying AtGames crap. It only supports their business and sends the message to Sega that they're doing a good job, which they clearly, objectively are not. Do NOT buy AtGames crap under any circumstances.
todays sega is not the original sega from 30 years ago. they were sold and bought and resold many times. their name to be more specific. so you don't support original developers.
I could be interested if the time investment was right. My family comes first and they dominate my time. If a collaboration could work around that, it may be doable.
Sega Lord X Yes I'm in a similar position myself regarding family. I've been making videos about the Virtua Fighter series with some modest success. I have some ideas for new videos about this subject matter that I would like to realize through a collaboration video with another sincere sega fan. Of course the deadline for this project could be as lenient as you would need it to be. If you're interested could we possibly correspond through something like email to work out the specifics of such an arrangement? I think it would be a lot of fun!
Nice review man! I really like your relax, laid back way of telling us like it is 🙂 Shinobi 3 actually sounds pretty good, wasn’t expecting that. But I also hate the joypad design, with the ridiculous D-pad. A couple of small pieces of advice for you: - don’t put a red border on your vids. It looks like I already watched the video that way, because of how RU-vid uses a red line under a vid after you viewed it. - the title of the video could be catchier; mention Atgames in it as well as “review”. Your title suggest a small preview IMO. Thanks and keep em coming man!
As always I enjoy watching your Sega stuff. And as a die hard Sega fan I appreciate being taken back to my childhood. Let's see how AT Games will handle the Mega Drive Mini, I've no huge expectations coz we know what they did so far. In case I shall be surprised I might buying one but otherwise there are many emulation options.
One good test for the quality of emulation is Bloodlines - I read from multiple sources is that Stage 3 is totally broken on that Flashback... While it’s sort of good knowing that Sega is getting royalties from this , I also have to shame them for allowing subpar emulation of their games.
SEGA was never my favorite, but I wish they'd come back to the glory they once relished in. I had both the SNES and Genesis, and believe me, it paid off because there were games like Earthworm Jim that were much better on SEGA.
Sega keeps okaying this stuff though. I have no faith in them miraculously making an AtGames branded Genesis that isn't crap. Its already confirmed that this Mini console their doing is AtGames.
A quality review as always. Lived your commentary on the built in games at the end lol. I hear unfortunately that At games are behind the Sega mini genesis also.
I took a pause on Saturn collecting. And am focusing on Genesis atm. Enjoying some side scrollers ect. BTW did you ever play Yu Yu hakusho the 1v1 fighter jp mega drive? It's really good I have to get it. Also long ago I found Super Fantasy zone on mega drive no idea why we in NA didn't get it. Anyway to just pop imports into a Genesis?
I've bought a couple Mega Drive games recently myself. I have played the import Yu Yu Hakusho, but don't own it. I own Super Fantasy Zone, a surprisingly awesome version of the game. I want Alien Soldier, but a complete copy is going for more than I'd ever pay.
In Brazil, a company called TecToy licensed Sega products for release. They'd often make little games to add to their systems, and I believe many of them originated there.
Approaching that pile of misery with humor was my only recourse. Otherwise it would have been a 2 minute expletive filled rant about how stupid Sega was for including them.
For those curious the 2018/19 version of this is quite a bit better than this model. It looks exactly like the model 1 genesis. At logo is on bottom right. No more screws on the controllers. A new interface software, and the biggest selling point? It has a SD card slot for adding games and firmware updates. It really is considerably better than this model.
Have you tried the Sega Genesis portable by ATgames? I found one in the discount section of an electronics department for $20. I ended up giving it to a friend because her 4 year old is obsessed with Sonic. It was another subpar effort although it did include an SD card and apparently some of its most glaring issues (i.e. poor sound sound) can be fixed. For $20 though, I can’t complain too much. Kind of how I feel about the $40 PS Classic I picked up. 😂
I bought one of these in the UK 🇬🇧 on sale at Argos, and mine is totally different, scroll up and down the menus with the up and down directional keys and it even has an SD card slot for save states. Is it possible they released a mk2 in secret without promoting??? 🤔 Good review though on this American model though. 😃
Hi, I know this is an old video but you definitely had the 2017 version.. 2018 version fixed pretty much everything and even had an sd slot to load roms.
I have the 2018 version and it's not great. Ramdom freezes, fantasy star 4 and shining force 2 are unplayable due to faulty roms used in this unit. Most original cartriges don't work properly (glitches/black screen) Console unit and controllers have a cheap feel. I could go on and on. I grabed a mega drive mini, hacked it with the whole library of md,ms,game gear, sega cd and 32x and got a 6 button controller for it because my unit came with 2 3 button controllers. I am happy with it.
@@miguelalves7333 That's so bizarre cause so do I and I haven't had a single issue. Sorry you have. I have tried all my carts and about 100 roms and not one glitch or issue.
I've got the mega drive version of this. I can't understand why Streets of Rage 2 isn't on it. My daughter likes to play Golden Axe with me, and it annoys me because I'd much rather play Streets of rage.
I don't get why the shovelware lol, they could have added some Master System Games the System would have been a great buy if they replace the shovelware to the Master System Games
@@SegaLordX Totally understandable. Personally I am thinking of, someday, getting a software-based emulator console, when I can't find a CRT TV to play the games on anymore, because to me the scanlines are an important part of the visual feel of the 8-18-32-bit console experience. But thankfully I'm not there yet. It would be nice too if there were options to overclock the virtual consoles (especially the 16-bits) to both prevent slowdowns and improve certain games like Sega arcade conversions.
@segalordx you need to get the quietly released 2018 version of this system it runs a licensed version of Genesis Plus GX emulator and can be identified by having no white atgames logo on the face of the unit it has the Genesis logo in the correct location as well there is now an SD card slot on the side of the unit. Also someone has created custom firmware to allow additional games to be loaded via SD card slot. I now have this updated version and it is excellent I highly recommend it. Here is a link to all the info. gbatemp.net/threads/atgames-sega-flashback-2018-edition-is-out-in-the-wild.522990/
The contrast on the output of the system is really high. It's like they're trying to overcompensate the brightness or something by adding extra filters. It's unnecessary..
2 funny things about "Spider" 1: graphics worse than Safari Hunt on Master System 2: according to the number of candles on the cake, the shooter is only 5 years old.
Oh man, the sound on the older AtGames units is so unbelievably bad it will make your ears bleed. The HD is a big leap in improvement. Let's hope their "newest technology" this year finally brings things up to par for the Mega Drive Mini.
I agree this unit improved upon the older ones, but it still wasn't as good as it should have been. Sega Genesis emulation has been really good for nearly 20 years, releasing a sub par box at this point is just not cool.
Sega Lord X I remember firing up Genecyst in DOS almost 20 years ago and was amazed with my first emulation experience. Only thing I remember being off about it was certain sound effects, most notably the goalpost spinning sound at the end of a stage in Sonic 1 or 2. It would be quite a few years before any emulator could reproduce that sound correctly.
Hell man, I'm still impressed with emulators today. Entire libraries of games stored on a memory card the size of your thumbnail. Such a thing would have been unthinkable back in the day.
I was really looking forward to this but such a let down. Wish sega would get a decent company to make the mega drive mini as I don’t think atgames will do a good job.
They are partner with Retro-Bit as well though I don't think Retro-Bit is interest in making a Sega branded console just yet, they are planning to sell some Sega brand accessories soon including those awesome wireless Sega Saturn bluetooth controllers.
This Flashback version of Sega Genesis was not so much collective, but they give more interesting and good game not just from one system, there is,if i good see,put from Master System,Game Gear handheld system,is really good for collection,im not sure is this good for gameplay 😕
I don't know about this stuff. I mean this stuff needs to be connected to TV? okay so that means it will have to share that same damn tv with my ps4 and xbox. and connecting/disconnecting between those two is already annoying enough and now I'll have to deal with three devices which will share one tv with just one connection socket so I'll have to reconnect them every time I want to play on a different console. it is actually quite annoying. even more what is the price of it? isn't it more convenient to install kega fusion emulator for free on your pc and play any game for free without having to deal with wires and share your tv with other devices that are already connected? you can also connect controller to your pc and get almost the same gaming experience.
Sega Lord X @games is so horrible I would almost prefer they "pulled a retron" and stole a half decent open source emu instead of using the old fire core emulator that they refuse to fix or move on from.
Agreed. Sega really needs to get its act together on these retro consoles. It's amazing they still fail to understand why Nintendo and its games stay so relevant. Nintendo actually understands production values are as important as the games themselves.
Atgames doesn't make these consoles for gamers. Their main customer is the average consumer that doesn't know any better simply looking for a twitch experience or looking for a trip down memory lane.
I think this is the only review of yours that I don't 100% agree with. Sure the AtGames consoles are not perfect and have their fair share of issues and those bonus games are a joke! But I think we have to realise the market that these "classic" plug n' play consoles are aimed at. Authentic, long-term Sega fans who still own and actively play on the original Sega hardware - are NOT who these systems are made for. These are aimed at everyday consumers who are likely to buy the product on impulse - perhaps as a gift for their kids or a fun trip down memory lane. The type of people who have not played a Genesis since the 90's - not a retro gamer that plays their's daily. Also you touched on some of the features at the beginning of the video but never showcased any. I would have loved to have seen that rewind function in action and hear your thoughts on that. Yes it is worth mentioning the games that are absent from this system and the horrible wireless controllers - but the fact you can play actual Sega carts on it and use authentic Sega controllers is a very big plus imo. In HD too! Does the 720p HD image look better than the original hardware on a CRT with Scart RGB? No it certainly doesnt! But the consumers this product is aimed at - typically dont own CRT televisions or have any clue what RGB Scart is! Honestly, Sega_Lord_X I am a HUGE fan of your work and Im super stoked you're back on RU-vid, so please don't think I'm trolling you or deliberately being argumentative for the sake of it. I just think as Sega fans - it's easy to point out the flaws in these third party plug n plays - when really it shouldn't matter to us as it will never replace the original hardware in our homes and until Sega get off their lazy arses and start releasing official first-party classic consoles - then this is all we are going to get and it's best left for consumers that wouldn't know any better.
It's all good man. I'm open to some friendly disagreement. ;) What you wrote here isn't untrue, but with companies like Nintendo releasing quality retro machines, there is little excuse left for Sega to be allowing products like this to exist. Especially at the MSRP.
Sega Lord X yes I agree :) Would love to see a 100% Sega made product. I think Sega are slowly starting to sort their shit out. With releases like Sonic Mania and some of their up-coming releases of older content like "Shenmue", I think that maybe they are starting to give back to their fans what we really want. Would love to see some Saturn exclusives (Panzer Dragoon Saga Im looking at you) see a re-release on current gen platforms.
I hope Sega fans realize that they need to support releases like Shenmue 1 & 2 HD to even have a chance at something like Panzer Saga. Sega will likely be looking very close at the Shenmue HD and Genesis Collection sales to decide on more retro style releases. Fans need to support that stuff diligently!
Let me get this off my chest. I really can't stand you... (sorry). But I really find your videos very informational! The snazzy look and background game music helps too. (Ever considered what I call 'Amazon game garage bands?') This video really helps me out a bit. Wish you had tried Rocket Knight Adventures and Gauntlet IV on the system... I got a fake At Games Genesis for my son a year or so ago... and the Sonic games IN the machine were next to unplayable! Gauntlet IV had terrible slowdown... and RKA I couldn't stand the sound... the emulator could NOT play all the parts of the music in the right... scales or parts of the scale. It was TERRIBLE! The music in the Sonic games was almost unbearable as well! I was not happy with that machine (the controllers were wired btw). Question: did I hear you correctly? Did you say this new machine actually will "download" carts installed?
That's a hell of a post, man. Can't stand me. I can't say I've ever felt that way about someone I've never met before. Yes, the system actually copies the game ROM from the cart to the system before you play it.
Sega Lord X That really IS cool! no offense dude. I just can't place why. I love you to death like a brother... but. ☺ I enjoy RU-vid videos as much as the next guy, you seem like a nice guy too.. just the whole RU-vidr phenomenon celebrity 'craze' rubs me the wrong way. But you're professional, to the point, great presentation, cool background music, it's all great. I do watch your videos for a purpose. Just don't take me too personally... it's more than just you. I see a lot of stuff and as a student of a behavior psych class (twice) of long ago.. I see patterns that people do online here that fall into a certain trap... and while I am in no way jealous of attention by a long shot... it's sort of how people get that status (and what they show) disturbs me. Like i said and let me put it this way... it's not you... it's a pattern of what audiences SEE in people's videos that I have seen and recognized that just make me think.... "really dude?"
