A Look at the Xbox Rechargeable Battery & USB C Cable (Play and Charge Kit) 

Excuse me, could you help me answer a question please? I’ve just bought that kit, but my battery makes rattle when shaking. I think that’s because the size of core inside smaller than the cover. I don’t know if that is normal or my battery is in error. Please help me! Thank you so much!

It shouldn't shake. Have you bought the right battery for your controller? I'd recommend taking the battery out and double checking it's connected correctly.

You would just charge it through the controller.

@Nordin That's bullshit. I own a PS3 controller for 10 years, it has integrated rechargeable battery, and it has no problems with battery life. This is just a trick by Microsoft so you have to expend another 20€ on the controller if you want full functionality.

@@metaridley77 I agree with that. My old PS4 ones still work and are over 5 years old, maybe 7-8 years old. Sure they don't last as long as they once did, but still work for hours before needing a recharge. I could technically take the controller apart and put in an online purchased replacement if I really wanted to, but never needed to.

@@kevs-gaming The third party market isn't too bad if you know the brands to look for. For the Switch pro controller being $70, it has a good battery life. I kinda get xbox's thought process of repairability for the controller but, the play and charge should come included at the very least with the console.

I have the Switch pro controller. It's essential as the joy cons suck. One or my favourite controllers.

In terms of controller, I have to say Sony got the best one. For its price, it has everything. Mic, motion detection, rechargeable battery, and touch screen panel.

Going through the same thing……..batteries so played out now…..I’ll take my PS4 back, the Xbox series S/X is not worth it, PS4 we’ll a good system now that I realize it, Xbox can never compare……I should’ve never switched…..but soon as that PS4/ps5 come back in stock……this Xbox series x Is gone

I think there's pros and cons. I had the PS3/PS4 etc so I was used to just being able to charge my controller whenever I wanted. One of the batteries in my PS4 controllers died though and I discovered it's not as easy to replace as Xbox (though mine was still under warranty so I got a replacement from the store). With Xbox, you end up paying so much more because of the additional expense, but the battery life of the official battery pack is good and there's many good third party alternatives.

They did this because if the rechargeable battery dies you have an option to put regular batteries in your controller

Having a PS5 and a Series X, I STRONGLY prefer having batteries. Buy a pair of rechargable and keep one fully charged when you're good to go. I HATE plugging in a controller to charge it

@@kevs-gaming Good to now 👍🏻. I wasn't using any AA batteries so far... I've been playing with my controller connected to my PC via USB c cable. (My PC's battery powers up the controller). Now I might be buying this Xbox battery kit so I can sit on my couch and use my TV too

That's exactly what I did with my old Xbox One controller. I connected via micro B. I'm fully wireless now. I'm a modern man 😁

@v0 odd, how did that happen? Do you live in a home that usually has quite high temperatures or low temperatures? It could also be faulty, you should replace it. I have one that has been working fine for more than 5 years of not being used and it works perfectly fine to be honest even to this day. (It is the Xbox One version rather than the Xbox Series version that I bought as it came with the Micro USB connection) It should still work well for the next 5. Should I have issues, I can just pop to the shop and get a new one. You could have also gotten a fake genuine part, but that depends which shop you went to and if it is one of the official stores mentioned in the microsoft/xbox website. But as I say, these Batteries are good regardless of controller.

@@TheMiniseany when i dropped my controller once, mine stopped working / wouldnt charge or turn on without being plugged in. I twisted the handles and pushed the pcb board inside the controller to shift/ move it towards the battery contacts as i suspected it wasnt making any contact after it fell and shifted / moved a little. It started working after that,

It's not something I've tested myself. I've heard others say it does fit, but it's a bit tighter.

I have seen a few cables available online that light up when they're charging that controller. Not as useful as seeing a charge indicator directly on the controller, but something you may want to look into.

this, i already feel stupid for buying a controller just for proper support, but for the price i paid for this and an old xone play and charge battery i almost could've bought 2 more dualshock 4's and that just makes me feel like i was robbed, i better hope this controller lasts for at least 10 years, because feature-wise it's not worth half of it

I've been very happy with the official kit, but I have friends who use third party solutions and are happy with that.

I'm not a fan of the way cables are tightly coiled in boxes either. My official xbox cable has long since died. It wasn't long bedore it frayed.

@Nordin I don't think it's too hard to replace the rechargable battery in a PS5 controller. I would rather do that once every two or three years than replace AA batteries constantly.

You can also just buy a USBC cable and play wired.

Eneloops. Buy two pairs that come with the charger and you'll never go back to regular AAs. A pair would give you 3800 mAh, which should last up to 3 - 4 days of 6 - 8 hours playtime before it needs to be recharged (then you only need 10 seconds to swap to the second pair and you'd get 100% instantly as opposed to plugging in the charge cable for a few hours). The batteries can also last up to 2000 charges before it wears out and dies (at least that's how Eneloop advertises it).

There is this Green and yellow controller that has that on the xbox website lol. Funny that they didn't bundle the other controllers with that but made sure it is on the ugly looking controller.

All batteries drain when not in use. The standby time of batteries varies greatly between batteries though.

@@XDaWsOnX2There is no light on this version of the Play and Charge Kit. If you have a light, you’ve got the older model, micro usb.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have that.

It depends on usage. All lithium batteries, whether they are in a phone, laptop or whatever, have a limited lifespan and need to be replaced after a period of time. If you're gaming several hours every day, it will die quicker. If you game a few hours every week, it could last many years.

Hold the Xbox button and switch it off via the Xbox menu.

Or just hold the home button for 5 -10 seconds even after the menu pops up and it will auto shut off

What are you using just now Darren? My friends are using some cheap battery packs and swear by them. I've never had any issues with charging, but I'm tempted to buy something different so I can dock and charge.

If the battery of your controller is damaged, you should buy a new controller. In this case, you should replace the battery and that's it.

@@FaridPangos not yet I tried to watch unboxings to read what the box contains and it was written "charging cable"on the side of the box even if on the front part of the box it says "usb-c cable" So I believe that charging cables only won't allow the controller to be recognised by windows since they charge up the battery of the kit only. Data cables (or synchronisation cables) are the ones needed for windows to recognise the controller. Sadly the play and charge kit only has a charging cable which won't allow windows to detect the controller.

@@FaridPangos so I bought the kit and plugged the usb-c cable from the controller to the PC without the battery in and it is recognised by windows 10 and I can use it in my PC games now. Hope that information helps you!

You need to press the Xbox button on your controller when the console is on. You'll see an indicator at the top right that advised the battery level of your controller and headset.

Either the battery is dead or there is a problem with the battery charging via the controller.

That will be the older micro B connection. Yeah you just need to use the provided cable and you're sorted 👍

Yeah it's a double edged sword. I guess it does make it more flexible. It's not as easy to change batteries on PlayStation controllers etc. But it does increase the overall cost of each controller too.

@@kevs-gaming true it def cost more!! No arguments there lol but while cost is increased so is longevity!! Esp since xbox one and so on accessories are forward compatible too

It's not something I can really help with. If it's left charging for a day and Xbox doesn't show a full charge, I'd return the battery.

@@kevs-gaming My first two Eneloop pairs are three years old now and still going strong. I've never been lucky with okay-and-charge kits -- they only last roughly a year before they start draining real fast. I also bought rechargeable AAAs for my other devices (clocks, remotes, etc.) and just gave away my stockpile of regular batteries.

You can play right away with this kit as well. You don’t have to wait hours to start playing again. You plug it in, 2 seconds, then start playing while it charges.

Try and charge it using a standard USB adaptor to rule out the Xbox being an issue (my guess is that it isn't, but worthwhile checking). Then double check the connection of the battery.

They quote up to 30 hours, but I've not tracked this myself as I normally play for three to four hours at a time.

This cable is type c. The older recharge battery used micro b.

That is something that annoyed me too (especially coming from the PS4). You need to view your current battery level via your Xbox interface.

If I remember right, you get one year of warranty. I'd have to double check that. I'd get a full replacement if it failed after three months.

Is that with the official charging cable? It could be an issue on the software side. Removing the controller on Xbox or pc and then adding it back could resolve it.

Mmm that's a good question. I'm out just now, but that's something I'll check over the next few days. I'll run my battery down and then plug it in whilst it's in sleep mode. My guess is that it does charge, but I'm not sure.

@@kevs-gaming Yeah please try and let me know... Xbox One u could turn your console and controller both OFF and it would charge... But with the Series S/X personally i dont think u can do this, it looks look the console AND controller both have to be turned ON, so the complete opposite 🙄 Cause when i was charging with the console ON but the controller OFF the charging battery icon on the top right side would stop inmediately! I think this is pretty annoying and a step backwards for a next gen console

Yeah there's always a risk of degrading batteries quicker if you don't use the right charger. For example, don't use your smartphone's fast charger as it will deliver too much voltage.

You'd have to check the max/recommended charging rate for the battery and ensure that's what you deliver. If in doubt, just charge via the usb port on your Xbox.

In a way, yes. One which is more expensive, but easier to replace when the battery ultimately dies.

I genuinely don't know how many hours you get. It's probably a couple of days of continuous playing. Whenever it needs recharged, I connect and play at the same time, so I've no idea how long it takes to charge.

They’re absolute garbage, I have one and the battery pack doesn’t charge. If you look online you’ll see that other people are having the same issue. I bought one for my Series X and it was ok for about 6 months, and that wasn’t with heavy use as I game on a PS5 as well.

I Bought 2 of them and both just stopped taking charge and made the controller behave weirdly.. They lasted for about 1 year and i'm not even gaming that much.

That's strange. I've not had any issues and I use it in my controller all the time.

As long as you have the right version etc, there shouldn't be any issues. I'd return it to the retailer and try and other one.
