A Look Back At The Legendary Nvidia 8800 GTX | The First DX10 GPU

The 8800 GTX is a graphics card featured in plenty of retrospective videos, but it's with good reason. Once the fastest and most expensive graphics card on the market, it changed the way we play games thanks to it's status as the very first DX10 GPU.
Back in 2006 this was the card to buy if you wanted unrivaled performance and money was of no object, but today even integrated graphics would give it a good run for it's money. None the less, let's take a look at what makes this card great, and see what it can do in games.

@Khel Yes. And RTX 4090 will come with probably 2 16 pin power connectors, so you can probably guess how power hungry it is. It’s actually 600W at stock clocks. Overclocked versions will really make your head spin at 240 fps.
@seikatsu.
@seikatsu. Год назад
@Khel the pins are for gpu that need more than 75 watts of power the gtx 1050 only uses like 65 or 75w thas why it doesnt need pins it can run off of the pcie lane

This card represents the timeframe that I built my first computer. I bought an 8600 gts, and felt like I was on top of the world. I remember looking at the 8800 the way that people would look at the 1080 ti nowadays. I remember thinking "Whoever has that card will probably never need to upgrade again in their life" crazy how much more advanced things have gotten since then.

When you realized, the 8800 GTX beating the Playstation 3 allready at the point when both relased. Notice here: Along the comments below me, the Playstation 3 had the graphical part from Nvidia, called RSX (Reality Synthesizer) with 500Mhz and it was based from the Nvidia GeForce GTX 7800 (NV47). When Playstation 3 came on the market on March 23, 2007 (Europe Relasedate) the Nvidia 8800GTX that relased worldwide befor (November 8, 2006) had allready 768MB of RAM itself. Even the price was high, in comparison the PS3 cost at the same time here in switzerland about 1000 SFr. The graphic card about the same price (switzerland is very expenisve with taxes). So you could had a choice here allready.

@enricofermi3471 6 лет назад
2080 to RayTracing is what 8800 was to DX10/480 to DX11 - first generation of new feature supporting gpu, meaning it gives you something to brag about now, but in two or three years, when tech develops and devs start using it widely, it would barely scratch "cinematic experience" aka 30fps limit with max settings and features enabled. So it's everyone's personal choice if they want to be the first at any cost or to wait until next or post-next generation and get something for actual performance. That is, of course, not including guys who just upgrade to every single next generation just to stay on the edge of technology.

that doesnt matter much from my personal experience, my FX 4600's perform within 1-2fps of my 8800 GTX. Theyre essentially the exact same card. The drivers dont impact performance much in many games, in fact in some they can actually be beneficial. Its not like nvidia is writing drivers for the card to perform in specific games, the drivers are just more streamlined ways for the rest of the computer to use the hardware on the card i imagine an FX 5600 with 1.5gb of vram would be like an 8800 Ultra or extremely close, but without the problems that 768mb of video memory would have

Found an 8800gt for 3 euros in a recycling center a while ago, couldn't resist getting it. Even though I don't use it it's cool to have such a legendary card in my possesion.

Niall if he dont want them i will take the i5 2500 if it's free.just got the Optiplex 390 and I've been looking to upgrade the processor and the gpu if you're looking to just get them off your hands but my main interest is the CPU.

And if it's free I'll like GTX 1050 Ti, and if you want, i5 2500 cuz I'm on Celeron from 2009 and the worst GMA you can get.

I found a 8800 Ultra at the local flea market (boot fair) for $5. Remembering the good ol' days with my 8800gts, I snatched it up for a haggled down $3. Works like a dream and I couldn't be happier using this card out in the PC in my workshop with my father's original ASUS RAMPAGE and a QX9650. It works as a PC and a space heater.

With this card I ran the orginal Crysis at very high 1024/768 and it blew my mind on my cubical PC screen. I'm pretty sure you could play modern games with this kind of resolution. You should try that to add those low res to your tests. Pretty neat throwback !

I hated Far Cry 2, gun jamming every 3 seconds and that, uninstalled it as soon as I finished it, was hesitant to buy Far Cry 3 because of how much I hated 2, but I actually liked Far Cry 3, much more like Far Cry 1, just using the Dunia Engine rather than the CryEngine
@Eburon
@Eburon 6 лет назад
The gun jamming was the point of that game. You are in a shithole where everything is old and unreliable. So, you have to earn diamonds in order to buy new weapons that are in good condition.

Yeah. Except for the end, I thought Far Cry 2 was actually a pretty unique and excellent game.

I don't like the campaign of FC2 but I just fell in love with the multiplayer just for the fact that anyone can create a custom map. I spent hundreds of hours on the map editor, trying to create the perfect map for sniper rifles, and at least 20 more. I really liked the fact that I could recreate some maps from other FPS like Dome from MW3 which I built using FC2's buildings and props. And trust me, it is really nice to see random players having fun playing on the map you've created ^^ And about FC3 : It's one of these few games you know you won't forget, since it was just so good.

I like how you say try to create the perfect map for sniper rifles, then remark you remade dome. One of the biggest maps in COD history except for Rust and Shipment ;-)

I remember buying an 8600 and wishing I had the money to buy two 8800's in SLI. I'm getting all nostalgic now thinking about PC gaming 15 years ago. I still remember what it looked like. It was a pink/red MSI board with copper piping coming out the sides. Damn, where did the time go? I remember playing a hacked version of the original Modern Warfare on that GPU.

It's worth noting that nobody played Crysis at 1080p back in 2007 even with 8800GTX. It was an era of CRT still. Very much everybody played it at 1024x768 - and 8800GTX dealt with it quite well.
