Zac heads to the northern Channel Island of Alderney again, and this time he takes a look inside the Command Bunker associated with the island’s best preserved gun battery called ‘Battery Annes’ which is located on the exposed south-west parent of the island.
This Command Bunker, like other structures at the time, was subject to the post-war scrap drive, which included the use explosives to separate the large steel rangefinder and observation turret from the surrounding steel-reinforced concrete, resulting in much damage to the whole structure. Once the scrap merchants took what they needed, it was left as you see it today.
Due to its proximity to the cliff edge, great care must be taken if you wish to visit the bunker.
