I been doing collision repair for 18 yrs now and the shop I work at took 5 yrs to get a new body man and he's 70 no young kids come looking to learn the trade. And it's a great shop with good pay and benefits shop matches 401k and pays half your insurance

Somehow I'd like to see you eat a sandwich or take a break or take a drink of ice cold tea or whatever you prefer to drink on a hot day. Great video! It sound like if the battery recycleing company was a scrap yard, it would only accept cleaned, detailed, rust-free square bodies! Sounds like that person should go back behind their desk and sit down. When I would sell batteries, the company would bring their own semi, opened up 250 gallon caged plastic containers, and we would stack my batteries into them. Of course I only had around 300 batteries at a time.

Guess truck loading is different than in the 70s. I worked on a dock, my boss yanked the driver out of the cab of the truck and told him to get his butt in the trailer and help out...or spend the rest of his life on the dock.

A suggestion on the cardboard you will need. Talk to a local retailer that sells gun safes, all safes come with good quality cardboard in a box configuration with no bottom because they are on pallets. Most of the time they just get rid of the cardboard however they can, particularly if scrap paper prices are low.

Can I make a suggestion on your batteries if you can find a long pipe that'll fit on your forks and you can slide that pallet up the trailer with that pipe I don't know if I'd tear the pallet up but you it's worth a try also when you go to those auctions look and see if you can find an old marigold round or you can set the pallets on there and make it a lot easier on you to put the Saran wrap around it just an idea

Silas look into buying what they call gaylords from your local grocery stores or warehouses. Gaylords are a pallet full size box like they ship watermelons in out of texas, one box use to cost 10-15 each but they are very sturdy and thick sides.. you can break them down and put in storage just for this type of battery loads.. then no wrapping, come with whole box and top..

While everyone is saying to get an electric pallet jack, I say build a loading dock (concrete platform is sufficient) with 85ft in front of it for an 18 wheeler. Then just keep a little forklift on the loading dock level to drive into the trailer with the pallets. Using the loader forks from ground level isn't great, because you can't get each pallet past the pallet jack. Every operation loading dry van 53ft trailers needs a loading dock, the patience of a saint, or a good back surgeon and cardiologist. Even if only using an electric pallet jack to load a truck from dock height, not having to turn the pallet jack around inside the truck, like you do when loading from ground level, is a big deal. On the other hand, you can't even keep your scale clear enough for use by 18 wheelers, so what are the chances you'd keep a loading dock area clear, clean, and usable? It would be a big adjustment to declare certain spaces as off-limits for sitting anything, ever, treating it like it's a fire lane. In a way, it's a fire lane for operating efficiently, because when access is blocked, your business profits are burning down.

It's inconceivable that there are people who would thumb their nose at $50.00 an hour work. It seems that unless it's super easy work some people won't consider any job, even at $50.00 an hour. Maybe you can get some high school kids to work for you part time like one salvage yard did in my town. They learned about cars and trucks while helping to strip parts from junk and wrecked vehicles but they also learned a work ethic which is something that a lot of teens are lacking.

I know I'll get my ass chewed out, but anyways, Silas, they do make a portable battery op baling tool that melts the bands together and cuts. No metal buckles. Would save you time. And moving batteries from a truck bed to a pallet is ludicrous. I know, you don't want to put them on pallets because the pallet will rot. Ok, put the pallet in a truck bed or in a covered box truck, then take it out when its full and park it under cover if you're so worried about the pallet rotting. Or stack it on double pallets so the bottom one is the one rotting. Any time you're double handling heavy batteries, you're doing it inefficiently. Just my sincere attempt to help you. Now you can chew me out.
