Not all Volvo wagons are made for doing Volvo wagon type things. This V70R was meant to be driven. Uh, when it isn't broken that is... Check out this same owner's autocross rig: • Nyan Cat Ford Crown Vi...
As an owner of one these cars, I told myself up front that I would not modify it for power because every system was already stressed to the breaking point stock. So far I haven't and thus haven't had the reliability issues that others have experienced. I consider myself lucky so far, but understand that anything could happen at any time. I would suggest that if anyone is looking for a car to modify inexpensively, the V70R is not the way to go.
@@daniel-xi3nj I do not have any first hand knowledge of the reliability of that generation, but I know that anything with a supercharger and a turbocharger would double the chances of problems.
@@bplus2351 I completely refreshed the suspension in my car and made a few modifications. I had to decide if I wanted to go the coil over route or new stock struts/shocks. I went with stock struts/shocks because the 4C stock suspension is continuously variable. This means that no matter if the car is in comfort/advanced/sport mode, the suspension is using all of the sensors in the car to determine how the car is reacting to the road. This is most evident in hard braking when the car wants to nose dive, but I can feel the front struts get firmer and resist the dive. This also keeps the wheels planted and helps the brakes do their job. It also works side to side during cornering. Aftermarket coil over suspension would not have that on the fly adjustability. I did go with IPD's rear camber correcting bushings and adjustable rear toe kit. It made the rear incredibly stiff and I really might not have needed those parts for street driving. For what it is worth, the ride quality is pretty brutal even on comfort. I almost never use sport, and I never touch advanced-both are way to stiff for the roads I drive. For reference, I owned an Acura Integra for 15 years and that thing was much softer than the V70R-and Integras are known for being ridiculously stiff. So to answer your question, if you change the suspension, you will lose some of what makes the car special. But you might find something you like better. Good Luck!
People who further stress these kind of special cars just to brag about speed should get a Mustang or Lambo instead, and let normal people have these cars.
I have a Volvo V70 2007 5 cil. With all options and I am 70 years old, but my wife wants a smaller car, a Nissan Juke of something. I said, over my dead body. My Volvo has 150.000 km so you have to wait until we pass 300.000 km.🇳🇱
Ignore the “haters”, nice job, car looks and sounds good. Sold quite a number of these back in 2004 to 2007. Currently own an 04 silver with blue int. Stock but with IPD stainless cutback exhaust. Love driving it! Good Luck to ya. 👍
Wow. Now this is how you tastefully mod a P2R. Thank you for respecting the stock nature of the car while still having fun. God this might be the best VR I’ve ever seen that isn’t stock.
Every time I see this car in person it brings back my want for another P2R, but then when @bigfieroman tells me what broke next I immediately remember why I sold mine lol
Interesting about getting the insurance company to cough up what his old car was actually worth. I really worry about this on my VR, and there are fewer and fewer comparables out there for proof. My VR has been fairly reliable in my few years of ownership, but it also hasn't been my daily. The VR has always been a bucket list car for me. Absolutely stunning appearance, and I don't give a shit if anyone agrees or not. I think it's one of the best looking cars ever made.
I'm looking on a v70r now and it cost 22000 dollars and have a very nice color and it is original and good technical so if i get car loan i will go and pick it up
Interesting to see the difference in culture to be honest, being Swedish having a car like this is actually a common practice not only because of the fact that we have a lot of Volvos xD But here having tuned wagons is more common than not despite the brand. Only recently that I switched over to an S40 T5 R and I do have to say shedding all that weight does make a big difference :)
I got a V70 T5 last week, so my classmate came up to me and congratulated me on my car purchase (only one in school with a car). He asked what engine I got in it and I answered T5 obviously, then he proceeded to inform me about how the T5 isn't so strong and the R can stock handle 850hp.. Yeah... Right... I asked relatively uninterested but wanted to see in how deep waters he was in "Okay, but pretty unreliably then?" and he said "No it is still reliable"... I get a headace from this guy. He also told me to drill a hole in the air intake filter because it is restricting air-flow... Duh, but it is also protecting your engine from debree... Just needed to share this with the internet, have a good day the person reading this. :)
Love it! We were a second owner to a 2006 V70R wagon in 2009. The car had been stage 2 kitted by IPD in Portland, the car had 18,000+ miles when we purchased it. It is Titanium Gray Pearl, completely murdered out, black Pegasus 18" wheels with blue leather interior, IPD HD anti sway bars, IPD engine front strut stiffener & polyurethane inserts. It was always stored inside and to say I'm a bit OCD with my vehicles would be an understatement. In 2018 I really wanted a Mercedes Sprinter 4X4 to build out, so we sold it and my 2001 Dodge Ram, my wife purchased a new Hyundia (yuck) and I got my Sprinter. Best part was I sold the Volvo to my buddy at work who was a Volvo tech for 8 years. He tuned it even more, new exhaust and inter cooler, programmed the Advanced mode to allow for the turbo to build more boost, the thing was sitting at 400+ hp. Well, my son turned 16 in October and my buddy wanted an R8, so guess what's back in the family! The car still looks like new, and what a car for a 16 year old! LOL. Needless to say, dad is so happy to have the car back. Sweat build, love the color combo!!
Thank you for the kind words! All the credit goes to the car owners that we feature in our videos. Without them, there is no Cylinder Scene. THEY are what makes this channel what it is!
@@CylinderScene hi i have a 2000 v70r awd laser blue phase 3 i wondered if you could please let me know what modifications you have done to the most beautiful car ever made yours looks gorgeous i really hope you send me the info thank you again and all the best and could you please let me know what bhp you said you have got the girl up to thanks Alex from the uk
I get the same reaction in my POLESTARV60. Why does that station wagon look so good. When I tell people it’s stock and comes from the factory like that, boy are they surprised. Love Volvo!!!
@@daniel-xi3nj 5 years of ownership only had strut mount replaced. Has been very reliable. I’d only give the thumbs up to the S60 with the inline 5 or inline 6 engines. The new 4 cylinder engine not so much
I used to go walk at this park crazy to know this sexy ass V70R is in PGH Area, I just picked up a junk V70 back in October for fun as a project car and fell in love I know want an 850R or V70R killing to find one !
It's very reliable when you keep it relatively stock. Mine is from 2004, i don't know why but i hear more problems with later years.......good oil and benzin,(octane 98)and normal maintenance, and proper warm up is the first care. Nice combi Sonic Atacama!!!, mine is Cosmicblue Atacama (only delivered in Switzerland). Nice video also!!
People really screw up by not letting the cat warmup sequence complete and just throw it into gear at 1500 rpm seconds after starting the car. That’s not just a Volvo thing, but Volvos do tend to have a rather drawn out car warmup. T6 especially.
well...I'm 57 and I like fast car but I like having a sleeper car.....That's why I own a 2011 Volvo XC 70 wagon with the turbo 6 cylinder......It produces 300 horsepower....All I did was install a K and N air filter....You really dont need to do much more.....My car can beat most cars off the line.....It surprises a lot of people....plus I removed the turbo badge off the back off the car.... its great cause a lot of people think they can just pass me no problem , but when I hit the gas I blow them away.......😆😆😅
Thank you to Cylinder Scene for featuring my car. And while I am not naïve enough to think that this will stop any haters, when I spoke about it being "about as fast as a C7 Vette", I was referring to the base model, based on power-to-weight. I have not raced one. I can confirm it is considerably faster than modern Mustang GTs.
@@lookcloser4536 I do not know for sure, Volvo does not release production numbers anymore. There was a time in which they were releasing numbers like that, and I saw a forum post that asked and said that Volvo said there were 3 in this configuration. I can tell you that I have been in the S60R/V70R scene since 2011 and this is the only one I have seen come up for sale.
@@bigfieroman Yeah I know, I’ve asked many Volvo Cars country representatives (France, UK, US and Sweden which hasn’t answered yet) that orientated me towards contacting the International CXO, which...orientated me towards the museum, as they don’t have those numbers anymore. And the museum is closed for the moment so I can’t ask ! I really want an M66 Sonicama V70R, I absolutely drool whenever I see this color combo. I’m searching for a stock, pristine unit, which is even harder. That being said, I’m in Europe so there may have been a lot more manual Sonicamas than the 3 in the US, but with no data I don’t know where they are and if they actually exist. Was it the one on SwedeSpeed some months/years ago ? I remember there was one Sonicama available, that I didn’t look to purchase given it wasn’t stock. I hope you’re enjoying your V70R as much as it wants you to ! Greetings from France :)
@@lookcloser4536 Thank you! Yes, this was the one that was for sale on Swedespeed in 2016. I have never seen another one for sale. The modifications were fairly light, but it did have an exhaust/downpipe/tune on it when I got it at 151k miles. Good luck on your search, I wanted this combo since I got my original Sonikap V70R in 2011 but they just don't come up for sale very often. If you get more accurate numbers on production, please let me know!
I love the fact I have to remove front bumper to change headlights which are always on, and the oil sump plug that's welded on and round like the moon 👍🤣
I've adored Volvo ever since I can remember but after owning a 2002 S60 and an '04 XC70 (That I bought to flip.) and currently working on my 1998 V70 XC I can say that the early 2000's Volvo's are SOOOOO prone to issues, that 2002 S60 has 160K miles on it now and I still do the maintenance on it after selling it to a neighbor, when I originally bought it to flip it I drove it around for a couple months and it's a great driving car, as soon as I sold it, it started having electrical issues, door modules were failing, both front doors broke the clip for the door latch cable on the inside and I had to JB Weld them permanently, some of the doors don't always lock, the passenger side brake lights stopped working due to a fault in the light control module that they still haven't fixed, water pump failed not too long after it was supposedly replaced before I bought it, the hood latch came out of alignment, for some reason which made it impossible to open the hood without taking the bumper off, the instrument cluster LCD stopped displaying, the radio LCD is starting to fail, the driver seat doesn't move anymore and they don't wanna spend the time/money to fix it, etc. The 2004 was plagued with a lot of the same issues PLUS the instrument cluster completely failed again right after I sold it. Meanwhile the 1998 while possibly having a blown head gasket and 158K miles all the electronics work perfectly, even the LCD on the dash and radio. I'm an auto technician by trade and mine aren't the only early 2000's Volvo's I've seen with these exact same issues.
Such a great car! I had the first and second gen Scion xb’s which I absolutely loved, had a hard time making a decision on a new vehicle after my second gen but then I found a 2016 V60 which is a dream to drive. Now I want a v70R lol
I'm the second owner of a 2005 V70R 6spd manual in candy apple red with 176K miles on the clock (had 145K when I bought it). I have replaced with stock OEM parts: Control arms Shocks and electronically controlled struts Fuel pump Turbocharger Fuel injectors and pressure regulator Thermostat Power steering pump Alternator Motor mounts Tires I have put in approximately $1.5K each year over 5 years, which is nothing compared to a new car payment. Next up is repainting the peeling clear coat. It goes like a bat out of Hell and I can pretty much beat anything off the line and I especially love the HP and torque in 3rd and 5th gears when I need tactical speed.
Nice car, beautiful color combination, even though i personally prefer the first V70R with the 19" replica 2nd generation v70r wheels. Only had BMW's for the last 7 years and going back to school so will have to make due without a car for the next 4 years but either one of the 850T5R/850R or 1st/2nd gen V70R are most definitely on my bucket list, been wanting one since i made this RU-vid account at 14 years of age lol.
You can't have a car like this, drive the piss out of it, and not expect to be fixing and repairing stuff. It's definitely a labor of love, but stock and well maintained, they are pretty reliable vehicles. I had an '06 s60 T5, and I loved that car.
@@Normthestorm69 don't cheap out on the filters and oil, service it regularly, and do the mechanical servicing on time. The turbos are known to wear bearings if you don't. It will be an amazing car otherwise. I wish I still had mine.
Aye, this is a common car i eu. The whole philosophy about having an station wagon that looks good with powerful engine is super common here especially for the younger generation. So much so that it’s hard to find wagons. Like a 335i wagon is not only hard to find. They more expensive than any sedan or coupe
04 XC70 2.5T AWD....less the 200 km...I'm in the hate place right now....seems the more I have done to it, the more it seems to need..just had the entire oil pan seal done, where it had an occasional drip, and now it is leaking, like never before...back to my Volvo guy. I love Volvos, but I am reaching a cash out place that is having me question when it becomes too much..Barely drive it....Hopefully this leak is based on a loose something from the job just done....The Vehicle you are showing is a lovely example btw.....The plate is ...priceless...
I really do like it, however I have really bad OCD and the clearance on the quad exhaust doesn't match at all if you look, one side sticks out further than the other and the position does not match either 😂. Setting my preferences aside nonetheless it's a beautiful motor. I really do love these V5s. Congrats on getting it sorted to your liking brother.
I clicked on this video because of the title and the truth in it. Unfortunately for me, the v70 I had, was much more hate than love, so I went back to the roots, a solid 945. Only Folks I felt good selling it to, was car max, only because they screwed me as a previous employer, back when they were ripping people off as Circuit City.
It's a shame that so many 'European' cars have reliability issues that get compounded by lack of easily available parts. This plus stupid wonky engineering in cars like Audi, BMW and Mercedes have completely turned me off. I have a 2wd 2000 Dodge Durango, 318 ci. which is very good looking but constantly broken, and a beat up 1998 Honda Civic that sips fuel and looks like crap but never, ever breaks. Ain't it the way? Thanks for your post.
I really want one but with this guy saying its unreliable and breaks often even though he obviously really knows his stuff makes me think twice. Looks so good though but knowing it needs shimming and is prone to failure when tuned is a downside of one of these. I do also like the polestar v60 T6 3.0 but they're pricey
The true value of these cars is when you keep them stock or just mildly upgraded. These are the perfect car to own while transforming your 2nd car into something completely impractical.
I have a stock 17" Pegasus that's bent. Now the question is do I just replace the one? Or get a new set? And with new even 18" wheels can have issues with these massive brakes. It's tricky to find rims that will fit.
It is connected, but it is kind of a T off of the exhaust flow. Very little comes out of that side, but the T is before the muffler and is connected to an electric cutout, so I can make the car louder/softer as I like.
Nice car! V70R owner myself, a beaut 100k 1999 model. Very interested that mine has drilled and slotted rotors but yours does not, seeing how yours is 7 years newer. Does anyone know whether the p80 models had these rotors stock or is this a modification by a previous owner?
I liked the KWs over the 4c, but I never had FRESH 4c. I only experienced them when they had at least 80k miles. I have heard that brand new 4c with stock springs, or TME lowering springs are a great ride.
The "atacama" color leather is open-pore, so it kind of absorbs anything that is put on it. That is an area where it was a bit cracked and absorbed the moisturizer that I applied.
@@bigfieroman ahhh, I'm on the eastern side. Beautiful car! I love my 98 V70 T5, silver and black leather, factory wood trim. A real time capsule!! 130k miles! One owner, I'm the 2nd. Dealer serviced for 110k miles for every maintenance item.
@@Twobarpsi Very nice. I apologize for mis-reading your question the first time. My wife's parents are in Bethlehem, so we head out there a few times a year (in non-covid times).
I’ve owned 2 P2R and they’re like having a thief in house always taking money from you . I had this same color V70R as well. Turning radius is HORRIBLE. Is that left rear wheel bent
@@gcrauwels941 I actually researched this, and could not find anything smaller than a 3/4 ton truck with a larger radius. The V70R is worse than Rolls Royces, Mercedes S-Classes, etc.
I’am sorry but, you should put the original grill, spoiler, exhaust system and rims back, and work on getting the engine running good on stock power instead. Nice colour on the car👌
The original turbo is shared only with the Porsche 911 (996). The turbo I had earlier was a custom one from an aftermarket company, and it failed a few times. I now have an upgraded stock-style turbo.
My 2005 v70 T5 needs no improvements- had it since 2018 and worked around Europe using it to commute to the Uk back and forth still only 140,000 - mint condition and have no desire to “improve” it
A Super Hybrid (75mm compressor) from Nick Knight at Duke City Turbo Bricks. It reliably flows over 1525 kg/hr and holds 29 PSI all the way to 7400 RPM.
I’ll tell you one thing that I had a very bad time changing the damn water pump in my 2008 Volvo S80 T6 and I did get it done but damn it’s a bitch. It does run great again but there too damn hard to repair.
