Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with the headmistress of the Michaela Community School, Katharine Birbalsingh. They discuss the importance of K-12 education, why it matters more than the universities in regard to the formation of thinking minds, how children can pursue both excellence and a life of dignity, and why strictness, absent tyranny, is the best form of education.
Katharine Birbalsingh is Headmistress and co-founder of Michaela Community School and former Chair of the Social Mobility Commission. She is known as “Britain’s Strictest Headmistress”, following the ITV documentary about Michaela. Michaela’s Progress 8 score placed the school top in the country the last two years. In 2023, OFSTED graded the school as “Outstanding” in every category. Birbalsingh read “Philosophy & Modern Languages” at the University of Oxford and has always taught in inner London. She has made numerous appearances on television, radio, and podcasts and has written for several publications. Birbalsingh has also written two books and edited another two, the last of which is “The Power of Culture,” which is about Michaela. Birbalsingh was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2020 and Honorary Fellow of New College, Oxford in 2021.
This episode was recorded on June 15th, 2024

But she doesn't need me to support her claims; she has the Michaela school as evidence. May God protect her from the attacks that will unceasingly come her way.

My school was strict, especially my deputy head Mrs Jones. We disliked her so much we ignorantly likened her to Hitler, but she taught us so much too not just in the curriculum either. We were so so fortunate. A year after she, like others, were forced to retire at 60, the school had declined, in education, in standards and in stability. She made me the woman I am, my children and others have benefitted from her wisdom and strict knowledge of correct behaviour. I thank God for that woman, and her example, in my life. 🙏 This school reminds me of mine.

As a lifelong educator, I hope that you have sought her out to thank her. Being a strict teacher - when combined with a loving heart and high standards - is by far the most effective method of education, but you are fighting the establishment and parents endlessly. It is exhausting, but hearing a graduate say, "I didn't appreciate you then but I do now - THANK YOU!" is balm to a teachers soul and helps keep them going.

Its quite remarkable. I was the beneficiary of a very similar eduction to the one that Ms. Birbalsingh is providing for her students. Like her, I also grew up in Toronto. I attended a Catholic boys school operating by the Christian Brothers in the 1970s. If I were a betting man, I would wager she attended a similar girls school run buy the nuns. The focus was definitely on knowledge acquisition and the development of moral character. By the end of Prep school (grade eight), we had mastered English and Latin grammer, and memorized vast tracks of English poetry, world geography and recent history. In order to collect extra cash for ice cream in the summers, my older brother used to make bets with kids in our neighbourhood, that he could tell them the capitol of any country in the world they could name; he never lost a bet! Like so many things missing in today's world, the miracle that Ms. Birbalsingh is reviving was standard practice less than 50 years ago. Our entire boomer generation benefited from it and then tossed it in the trash. How stupid can people actually be, eh!

I grew up in Ecuador until I was 9 years old, and my school there was set up somewhat like that, I remember how hard we worked to get good grades, we sang the national anthem, and the teachers were attentive(maybe a bit too strict, catholic school) and when we moved to Tennessee all of that was thrown out the window. The school was poor, education was poor, the students were poor, nobody cared and I just stopped caring. Also didn't help that they made it so easy to pass, that I hardly did homework, I don't remember studying for any test, sleeping in class, or not paying attention(other than a select few teachers) and yet I still passed as a B student. I used to think that it was nice when I was younger but now I saw how much meaning was taken and how lazy and how depressing it started to make me have anxiety and I went to alcohol, pot, and girls to numb everything out. I hope there are more educators like the templar of women, God bless you, ma'am.

She was my entry point into a whole world of heterodox thinking that led me also to Glenn Loury, John McWhorter, Peterson, Haidt, etc. She’s 100% correct: give K-12 students age appropriate facts about the subjects they are learning, and depending on age, help guide them, by using structure and discipline, to develop social skills such as public speaking and respect for those around them.

I just simply love seeing two grown adults having a conversation period. What we are missing in our current iPhone society is simple communication skills. I received a lot of fresh knowledge myself by watching two adults communicate well. My prayer is that we would ALL reclaim the basic communication abilities required to not promote anger and frustration but humility and patience. Thank you both for having this conversation and sharing it with the public.

Thank you, Jordan, for this incredible interview and Katharine, for your enlightening insights and experience; the future IS children and it should always start with meaningful learning. Here in my home state in the US, the homeschooling community has been exploding in popularity due to a decreasing quality of public education. The latter of which is a growing issue in America all-around. It brings me joy to find children are being given purposeful, forward-thinking tuition in England, which I generally assumed to be too modern 'progressive' to offer such a thing. Despite the obstacles, the fight for our children and our future is a fight that cannot be lost. God bless you, both.

I used to hate school enormously. For one, the school didn't keep order properly. There was no fairness, if you punched someone, the person you punched got into as much trouble as you did because "it takes two to fight" and the punishments for starting trouble were insignificant. I was forced to attend by law and as such, I had no choice on the matter. There was also little choice on the subjects either. Pointless things were taught with no context as to their usefulness in life and there was no room for practical applications of learning in school because that takes money. Just bunch of boxes determined by some unelected bureaucrat that needed to be ticked. I spent almost a decade on that system. When I finally left, my scores were either extremely high or low on each subject, very much dependent on how good the teacher was and how interesting the subject was as a result. When a teacher made me angry, I always had poor scores. I never had any interest on higher education or academia as a result, because why would you willingly return the same hell you escaped from? So I took the easy way out and picked whichever sounded fun. Obviously, not a ton of jobs available because training people to be unemployed seems to be the norm. I also had zero motivation for work either. Eventually I did look at my life and tried to turn things around, looking at the subjects which I didn't bother learning in school, and it didn't take long to catch up after realizing the core ideas were never actually being taught to begin with. The teachers completely failed to communicate the information to me, which explained why I didn't care in the first place. Eventually I managed to learn CNC machining and almost immediately became employed and when I look at the few young guys who come into the business straight from school, they're often exactly like me, voluntarily keeping their brains turned off, going through the motions and not caring about anything. They don't engage nor communicate with you and they don't want to if they can. They just want to fill the hours and go home, exactly like in school. The public school system is like a prison system and you need to be rehabilitated when you get out of it to function in life as an independent adult, because the system tries its best to destroy your initiative and ability to operate independently.

Speaking of a great education, Dr. Peterson, you were saying that Peterson Academy is launching this week? I absolutely cannot wait. I had to choose between grad school at UMaine (woke as a joke) and Peterson Academy and, well, that’s not a difficult choice. I won’t have the time and attention to begin until this fall, when my kids go back to school, so I’m thinking of it as beginning the fall semester after a gap year (I earned my BA last year). My years at the University of Maine were very rich and very happy ones. I emerged a stronger Christian and a stronger conservative as a result of testing my beliefs and finding them good. But it wasn’t the education I dreamed of as a child. Peterson Academy is. My review of my evening at your lecture is done, I’m just waiting for a publication date from my editor. I hope you will like it. Feel the need to leave you a hug and warm wishes for a successful conclusion to the South America leg of the tour and traveling mercies as you travel home. I was briefly a teacher. Katherine keeps saying over and over that children need knowledge. Amen. Here is another way to put it. I use the word "facts" in place of knowledge. The ethos in American education is that facts are too hard. Why learn facts when you can just look them up? Or so the argument goes. The answer is that facts are to ideas what words are to sentences and sentences to paragraphs. You can't write without knowing words and you can't think without knowing facts, or knowledge. Jordan and Katherine, "We the people." can't thank you enough.

I got into education because I genuinely care about the kids in my community. I'm not there to teach them politics. I'm there to help them pass their exams. We're doing a personal development week this week, and I've spent Monday and Tuesday working with many of my year 7 students in the community, teaching them about conservation and volunteering in their community. Who knew kids could have so much fun litter picking. The best find was an abandoned stripped out quad bike which they worked together to get off the heap. I'm mega proud of the hard work they've put in over the last two days.

The subtitle of this episode nails it: the adult must lead! Stop trying to induce the children to participate in setting the ground rules. They don't know what's good for them! WHY is bedtime at 7? WHY are we having this for dinner? WHY are we drilling the multiplication table? Don't explain. And don't feel you need--if your child resists--to consider alternatives. You know best; so, just make the decision--and be consistent. (Eventually, they too will understand "why.") Never mind about getting your kids' approval. Be the grown-up. Be someone that is seriously deserving of respect. Above all, don't pussy foot around about exercising the responsibilities that, as a parent or educator, you in fact have. That competence, and confidence, is, actually, one of the things children most admire about "grown-ups."

As a former adopted child by two teachers I had an inside listen to how teachers speak about students and parents afterhours. The amount of Classism, meaning teaching a student based on the income of the parents. The richer the student the better education they were given.

Ms. Birbalsingh reminds me of my elementary school principal in the mid-fifties. He had been a captain in the military in WWII, his shoes were shined, he dressed like a professional and the school ran very well. We sang O Canada at the beginning of our weekly assembly and closed with God Save the Queen. He occasionally even played skip with us at recess. This woman is an inspiration and should be a model for all schools. I homeschooled my children, starting in the mid-90s, and got a fair amount of flack for it, even losing friends over my views on public education. But I'm so pleased with how they turned out as adults with children of their own, and they are homeschooling their children. And they are grateful that we homeschooled them also. My adult children are amazing, loving healthy happy, and they are succeeding in life by every meaningful measure. All the evidence indicates that homeschooled children outperform their public educated peers. Just as an indication of how my children turned out, they are HUGE Jordan Peterson fans. We can only save our liberty by saving our children, and we can't do that until we abandon the public education system that teaches them to hate the structures of society that preserve liberty.

As a student teacher, I did my practical training in 2 different preschools. One had more traditional ways of teaching children - more specific guidance on activities and behaviors. The other embraced a newer philosophy which allows more children's creativities, giving scaffolding. The students from the former school were well behave and kind. The students from the later school were mean to each other and adults (aka me). Looking back, clear boundaries seemed to produce better behaviors.
