This is a translation by Kody NOKOLO and Lone of the message at the end of an interview with Shigesato Itoi. The interview centered on discussing MOTHER 3 to celebrate its rerelease on Nintendo Switch.

Man, I grew up thinking “out of all the smash bros brawl characters to share a name with why does it have to be this character I don’t know.” But after playing mother 3 and being in the community for a while now, I am so glad that out of all the video game characters out there I share my name with Lucas.

Have yet to play Mother 3, but i've seen a playthrough and I feel the same, there's not many videogame MCs named Lucas, but I sure am glad Mother 3 Lucas is one of them.

Yeah, if not for him being included in Smash, literally no one outside of Japan would even know who he is (unless maybe they played Earthbound). Also, I believe the male protagonist from Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum is also named Lucas (it’s his default name if you play as the female protagonist).

another person whose life was changed by mother 3. it allowed me to find a community, it lifted me out of art block when i was really close to quitting art, and most important of all: i was dealing with the death of both of my parents while i played it, having tried my best to repress my memories of them while struggling to do so. mother 3 taught me to honor them and remember them and face my grief head on and i've been coping so much better as a result.

I first played Mother 3 as a vulnerable, heavily self-conscious and emotionally distant 14-year old and really resonated with Lucas at that time. Now as a 26-year old who's been through a lot and come out the other side with more confidence, close relationships, and a career, I still find myself resonating a lot with Lucas' journey of becoming stronger despite the hardships.

remember people, there might not be an official translation ever. we still have to be grateful that we have an awesome fan translation of this game, thanks to the fans. that doesn't mean that we shouldn't hope for an official translation so it can be played and enjoyed by millions of people.

I still have yet to play Mother 3, but even Earthbound was life-changing for me. I started playing it towards the end of my senior year of high school (shortly after it was added on the Switch), and finished the game the night before my first-ever job interview.

Video games are art, Shigesato Itoi proved that with the MOTHER series. (I mean it was always true but still) I am thankful to have enjoyed them throughout the years, what he said is true, replaying the MOTHER games always brings me back to when I first played them

He's such a pure, wholesome guy. For anyone looking to support him, the Hobonichi Techo MOTHER merch is official and they do ship internationally. I bought a Franklin Badge from them and it's really nice quality and supports Itoi. I feel it's a nice way to offset the need to play an unofficial translation to experience the game in English.

I just started playing Mother 3 like, on February 27th of this year, and that's about 8 days after I've just completed Earthbound/Mother 2. I started playing Mother 2 when I was 8 and got the Earthbound Player's Guide when I was 9, but then took an 8 year hiatus.....They're both really amazing games! I hope that Mother 3 will actually be localized officially one day, because I'm playing a phenomenal fan translation currently. I have loved this franchise since I was 8 (I'm 16 right now), and I don't think I'll ever stop loving Earthbound. Thank you for creating Earthbound/Mother, the best franchise (imo), Shigesato Itoi.

I really hope that one day this game gets a western release. This and mystery dungeon EoS are easily some of the best and saddest stories Nintendo has ever told, and so many people deserve to experience the former themselves (I know you can just play the fan dub, but it's not about me playing it, it's about the mass public playing it).

Mother 3 is one of my favorite works of art out there and like he was saying at the start of this video, when I replayed it last year I DID reflect a lot on how I felt when I first got into the series and how much I was inspired by it to make my own art. As sincere as I can be in a youtube comment with a fortnite profile picture, I felt like I had a big connection with who I was as a child and who I’ve come to be as an adult, and I think young me would be happy with who I am now. So yeah, it wasn’t all in vain. Beyond thankful for this series, it’s never been more relevant than it has been now.

I first played Mother 3 in early 2021 in one of the darkest times of my life. I can't say it saved me but it was there at a time where not much else was. Thanks to all the Mother 3 team for their incredible work.

You can tell that Itoi worked (or works) on marketing because he manages to say things that really resonate with someone. It‘s been almost 4 years since I‘ve played this Game for myself and looking back, it‘s not only insane how much time 4 years is but also how much I changed and improved as a person. Sure, there‘s still some personal stuff that I want to improve on but I can be proud of myself for coming this far on my own. Mother 3 truly is a one of a kind Game, even compared to its predecessors. It‘s absolutely worthy of being one of my favorite Games

Thank you for the kind words, Itoi-san. Unfortunately, the only way for us to play this game is by stealing it, and Nintendo refuses to give any reason why. It is very frustrating.

There are a TON of questionable content that would likely cause massive backlash. (Magypsies, the toilet dungeon, Haniwa's very family unfriendly death being described, animal abuse) it simply wouldn't go well if they released it,l the moral guardians would boycott them

The fan translation headed by Tomato is freely available for them to use, in fact, they offered it up to them when it was done. It's probably a better translation then they could ever attempt, especially nowadays. It's always been on the table. Why won't they just take it and simply remove the intro screens the team programmed into it and release it on the Virtual Console? It would be SO simple. The fact that they won't and haven't for all these years means they probably never will. It makes no sense. They don't even have to spend money to do it. It's a Win/Win situation.

Honestly? I don’t really care if Nintendo localizes Mother 3 anymore. The fan translation is top-notch as it is and it’s readily available on the internet. It would be very hard for an official translation to perform better. I’m also glad that the series stopped at 3 games. Mother 3 was a perfect ending to the series and I would rather have a trilogy of incredible games than a flanderized cash-grab franchise.

2008 was the most memorable and nostalgic year for me, playing Super Smash Bros Brawl and seeing all these amazing characters and coming across Lucas, I thought “hmm is from the same game as Ness?” I would then give Earthbound a try and eventually Mother 3 and last bunt not least, Earthbound Beginnings and I would go on to to be a full on Mother/Earthbound fan!
