Over the course of 35 years I have been to dozens of Metallica concerts. During that time ticket prices have continually increased. In this video I take a journey through a selection of some of the best Metallica shows I have been to, and look at how ticket prices have evolved.
For each show I discuss the opening band(s), ticket cost, and some of the highlights. I've been very fortunate to have attended a bunch of rare and special Metallica concerts. If you've been to any of these shows, jump into the comments and let me know. If you haven't, post a comment letting me know the best Metallica concert you've been to.
The following shows are discussed in this video:
- March 18th, 1989 in Syracuse, NY (with opening band Queensryche)
- July 16th, 1989 in Weedsport, NY (with opening band The Cult)
- February 28, 1992 in Albany, NY (An Evening with Metallica)
- April 13, 1992 in Rochester, NY (An Evening with Metallica)

Ever see the story with Blackie Lawless, where he was in his bands dressing room, MetallicA was getting ready and actually started playing one of their songs. And Cliff wasn't on stage yet! Cause Cliff busted through Blackie's dressing room door and says "Blackie! Which way is the stage? " and Blackie thought Cliff was f***** with him. I probably butchered some of that story. But you can check it our for yourself. And hell if you're a MetallicA fan like myself? You probably already know this story lol.

Great video. It helped to remind me of the times that I have seen them. Perhaps the reason for the crazy increases in ticket prices across all bands is because traditional "album sales" as they were in the past were likely more profitable than they are with the streaming platforms they are tied to today. Historically, touring was the primary driver to "promote album sales" because that is how they made their money but now they need to generate their revenue from shows. They biggest issue of the day is the fees that the ticket houses charge. If you think about it, their ability to digitally distribute tickets vs physical tickets saves so much on labor and physical ticket outlet sales and managing all that goes along with that craziness in every city that the band plays, it has got to be cheaper for them. I understand that having the digital infrastructure to support and manage their sales is a large undertaking but there has to be a reasonable fee that could support that while making money, not the insane fees of today. Perhaps an interesting metric, since you have the data, would be to calculate the percentage of the total ticket price that is going to the fees to see if they are actually staying in line over the years or getting out of hand as it appears.
@NoneMoreMetal
@NoneMoreMetal Год назад
Excellent points. Without a doubt, decreased revenue from album sales have contributed to higher ticket prices. And yes, Ticketmaster and their competitors are gauging customers with thier fees. I’d love to break out the fees from actual ticket costs, but unfortunately many tickets that I have don’t differentiate.

Nice video. I saw Metallica for the first time in April of 89. The most unusual show was Jan 31 1993 in Rockford IL. The Arena opened early to fans to watch Super Bowl 27 on the Jumbotrons. Michael Jackson performed at halftime. Either before or after MJ , Lars came on the screen "How 'bout this, Michael f***in' Jackson opening for Metallica!" Overall I've seen them 10 times over 7 states. Last time being in Pittsburgh (I believe the day after you saw them in Buffalo) As far as prices for 'No Repeat Weekend' I didn't flinch...until I paid the credit card bill at the end of the month. 😅

Yo, thank you so much for sharing your Metallica Show journey, especially in such detail. I really found this video entertaining, I was fascinated with everything from the prices, the venues, to the highlights, to meeting the band multiple times, really great and interesting story. I saw Metallica live at the State College on October 20th, 2018, it was a birthday gift from my dad and he didn't tell me until sometime after getting the tickets (some months prior to October). Jim Breuer was the opening act along with a dj who played songs like It's So Easy from G&R, You've Got Another Thing Coming by Judas Priest, and others. I still remember getting up and leaving early to beat traffic because it was like a 3 hour drive, we listened to mostly Metallica songs on the way there. I remember stuff such as seeing military trucks on the highway which was cool. When we got there we checked in, we went for a walk and I saw pig for the first time in forever and it was huge, my dad took a picture of me standing next to it. We ate at a diner and I remember The Dark Knight Rises was playing, the football stadium scene, and what's funny is that we went for a tour of the Penn state stadium which was cool, we went down onto the field too, it was awesome. I also remember my dad and I going up to the venue and there was a guard sitting reading a book and came out to talk to us, I asked if the band was in there with hopes getting a chance to meet them lol. The show itself was unlike anything I've ever witnessed, prior my dad got me some shirts and I still have the bag we were given to this day with the Hardwired face on it, and the concert was just incredible, so incredible I couldn't stop telling me my dad "this is so f**king awesome!", I loved every second of it. I'm grateful and I will be seeing them again in New Jersey this year for only 1 night and it cost like $2-3,000 dollars for me and my dad, it's counting as both my birthday and Christmas gift. I'm really looking forward to a new setlist, a new stage and hearing songs I haven't heard before. I love Metallica, they really helped me in a way that's indescribable. Again thank you for this video, really fascinated by all of that, I can't believe you saw them like 40 times, I couldn't imagine hearing Enter Sandman or Creeping Death that many times, but if you love it, then go for it, must of been a blast. And I subscribed almost instantly after you said Slither was underrated in a previous video lol.

I wore that shirt from 6th grade to my freshman year in high school. Where it was faded, and had rips and tears just like Doris on the shirt lol. I remember the kids my age were saying "You know that band sucks right?" Or "You listen to that bullcrap?!?! How can you understand what they're saying?" First price is 126 euros (up to 269 euros, and more VIP things). I think it's very wise, because I could not see most fans paying for two shows, plus transport, plus three nights at the hotel in Paris plus taking a day off from work to come back the day after the second show. Paying 126 euros plus transport (praying the trains are not on strike...lol) and maybe one hotel night is already a lot for most people...

This is an issue with most bands these days, and Ticket Master is one of the main culprits behind this. A few years ago I went to see Judas Priest and we paid around $45 for floor seats. Last year I saw them again we paid around $70 for nose bleed seats. My friend accidently bought 4 tickets and sold the 2 expensive tickets to her friends at around $140 each. They were literally sitting right behind us. Ticket Master says that it's all about supply and demand. Ticket prices for a show will change depending on demand. The more demand for a show the more the ticket prices are going to skyrocket. Blink 182 tickets were starting at $351! Also with the rate of inflation, cost of fuel, it's costing bands a lot to tour right now. Especially big bands, who have a big crew behind them. Several bands, like Anthrax, had to cancel several shows in Europe simply because it was costing 3 times the amount to rent tour buses this year. With the rising cost of renting tour buses, due to demand of so many bands touring, and the cost of fuel, they would have lost money on the tour. I think the other thing that is raising ticket prices, and I blame music fans for this, is that we've taken away the main revenue stream from bands, by no longer purchasing music. Touring is now the only way bands can make money. Bands make next to nothing from streaming, so they have to tour to sell their merchandise at shows. Even Tom Hunting of Exodus said that "bands have become travelling T-shirt sales men now". I still buy music, but I'm a dying breed. It used to be that bands toured to push, and promote, physical album sales. When bands played shows in areas, the album sales generally went up after. But that's not the case anymore. Bands pretty much tour to survive.
@NoneMoreMetal
@NoneMoreMetal Год назад
You make a lot of good points. Rising ticket prices can be attributed to a wide variety of factors. Ticketmaster has always been ridiculous, and only continues to get more so. I don't fault the bands for having to find other ways to make money with the decline in revenue from album sales.

I'm 44 years old, been a MetallicA fan ever since I stole my brother's ...AJFA, Kill em All re-issue with Am I Evil & Blitzkrieg added on each side, and Garage Days Revisited the $5.98 ep. That was between the years of 1988-1990. Then I purchased RtL, ans MoP. Both cassettes were white, and the RtL had the bands logo on the cassette. I was fascinated by that logo lol. I actually became a fan before 1988. I have a 3rd grade school picture of me with a Bigfoot monster truck shirt, sleeves cut off, with my red Max Headroom shirt underneath it. With a round metal shirt pin, that was about the size of a half dollar piece with the Master of Puppets album cover. I would grab my Cassette Walkman everyday after school. I would do homework when I got done playing air guitar, in the back yard, at night, with my shirt pulled over my head so I could head bang like Cliff Burton. But one thing I've never been able to experience is a MetallicA show. I had an opportunity in 2019 when they played in Birmingham, Alabama. 2 hours from home. And I was going through surgery and lost my job. My relationship with my kids was affected by everything that happened that year. Then Covid had to shove its "So What" old man's **** up my a** also. I'll probably never get that opportunity to witness this band live. A band that has meant so much to me and love for their music and all music in general. I enjoyed listening to your story my fellow MetallicA fanamaniac! 🤘😎🤘

i saw the last show of the north american 2016 show (edmonton). i walked up to the door and just asked for a free ticket and got one (it was webcast, so i presumed they wanted bums in seats). seats were awful, and the sound was an atrocity from my section. i just walked around and listened from various places. the band played great, bad sound aside. i hadn't listened to metallica in close to 20 years, and this show turned me back into a fan boy.

That’s killer. Getting in for free is a huge bonus. I actually saw Metallica one time for free, but I didn’t talk about that particular show in this video. Maybe I’ll cover it in a future video. Thanks for the comment!

in my opinion the cost is up due to inflation and also because metallica just loss in court against their insurance company for canceled shows during covid also their world tour is alot less shows only 42 over the next two years
