Bellows House emerges as a modernist-inspired holiday home, robust and fortifying in its concrete, brick and block construction. Designed by Architects EAT as a family holiday house, the bold form is layered with intricate interior design and architecture detailing. The name Bellows was inspired by the pyramid shapes within the interior, similar to a bellows of a camera lens. The dynamic layered concrete forms add depth and height to the interior design in a refreshing animation of space.
The bellows pattern is replicated throughout the family holiday house, through joinery handles, kitchen benchtop as well as the external window shrouds. Similarly, concrete materials are repeated throughout the home, seen through white concrete blocks used both internally and externally. Whilst these robust and hardwearing materials form the base of the structure, timber is used throughout the interior design to soften the textural palette of the family home. As a modernist-inspired holiday home, the materials were also chosen to accentuate the natural ageing of the architecture, as well as to appreciate the dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout space.
Located in the Victorian seaside town of Flinders, Architects EAT conceived the house as a permanent structure, built as a modernist-inspired holiday home. The landscape, designed by Jim Fogarty Design, is filled with native plants and adds another layered element to the house. The landscape plays an important role in bringing the inside out, as the internal brick floor extends out to the gardens, reinforcing a blurred boundary between indoors and outdoors - a significant virtue of a family holiday house.
As a modernist-inspired holiday home, engagement was a significant design factor. The entryway into the home is purposefully drawn out, which allows for the material and shape of the home to be deliberately experienced. As a modernist-inspired holiday home, the long façade is punctuated with articulated blockwork, which allows the space to feel intimate.

There's so much Frank Loyd Wright's LA's hollyhock house and other mezzoamerican inspired elements. The pyramids, and using that pattern in the handle. Absolutely beautiful

I really loved the use of blocks. I'm super inspired by this. It's cheaper to build and the aesthetic is absolutely stark.

why do you say it's cheaper to build? because of the concrete?

The level of detail and Albert's commitment to carrying though the ziggurat pattern is unrivalled attention to detail. I love how the weather adds to the sense of shelter inherent to the home as well.

Love it ! Like a modern day pyramid . That ceiling makes me want to sit under it and look up & relax . The flow of the house is serene . There is something sharp and peaceful about it, invites me in.

Your channel is like a precious diamond. The houses presented exude calm, elegance and softness. I wish I could live in Melbourne. Here in Germany, new houses are so boring and there are so many obstacles to building. Thank you

Loving the ziggurat narrative of the house in a lot of the elements. From the concrete ceilings to the door handles- to even some of the pendulum lights and Wright-like Besser wall lamps. very unique.

Such a great reminder when the architect had the vision to make the house as a permanent structure that will last. Often time we dont think about this when we design.

A beautiful complex and artfully executed project. If the architects at EAT have not seen the work of Carlo Scarpa then is it truly an original masterpiece. If they have then the credit to that architect as inspiration is lacking in this interview. For those interested in masterful works of high design in concrete I highly recommend Scarpa's work. Great job nonetheless. Thank you Local Project for your continued coverage of exquisite projects.

Gorgeous concreting and block work. I love this thoughtful and practical design. Aussie Architects have come a long way since the 80s and more recent repeatative box like rendered McMansions they all seemed to replicate. This whole house is so warm and hardy, not pretentious in any way. Hmm Lovely.🙏💕🇦🇺

A beautiful example of GOOD contemporary architecture. Because the architectural style is clearly connected to earlier, more complete historical styles (Brutalism and Modernism) the house has a classic, timeless character that will age well with both time and patina. I see elements of the Ennis House in Los Angeles by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as some of the later Case Study Homes (Also in LA). Contemporary architects could learn a lot from this elegant and refined example. There is really no escaping the architectural maters who created the Modernist movement. Good contemporary architects know this and incorporate those ideas into their own language. That is certainly the case here. A true inspiration!

@cmomo02
@cmomo02 2 года назад
How react the neighbours after you build that house? Why I'm asking that? It's because the structure of the house changes a lot the landscape of the neighbourhood. In France, in some area it will be difficult to create that building, the town hall will require to save an homogeneous structure compared to the house already built to not disfigure the whole
