Once an uninhabited and dirty attic space, Villa Saint-Michel was transformed by Nicolas Bossard into a bright, compact and fluid space with a combination of earthy tones and playful colours. After modifying and reinforcing the structure, Bossard added a separation wall, an attic and a feature floating birchwood staircase, designed to take up minimal floorspace. On one side of the staircase is a neatly tucked away small home office with a mustard coloured wall and on the other a luminous yellow archway leads to the surprisingly large stand alone kitchen. The living room, with its feature burgundy wall, birchwood shelves and fireplace is designed to maximise comfort, whilst the ashwood dining chairs and linen curtains all combine to create the Scandinavian beach-side cabin feel that the client envisaged.

This is one of the best small space interior designs I’ve ever seen. So impressed at how the storage is incorporated seamlessly into the entire (not to mention beautiful) space without that forced, crammed feeling. Especially love the use of dividers as storage! That bothers me a bit...they're constantly calling things small and they seem to design for/show folk that have zero hobbies or pets and children, it's just a sortof place to hangout after work with some colleagues. Maybe I'm taking this too personal, but I make art for a hobby and I have a 35m2 place with no extra storage. I have a 2 by 2 m2 kitchen with a low sideways wall (one third of the kitchen is gone because of this) and honestly, around me live people in their 40's and 50's that can't afford a bigger house, can't afford to start a family or get themselves a pet, because it's just too damn small. And then they call 50 square meters a 'small' appartment for seemingly one person.

I'm old school, from the days when kitchens were a separate entity even in the most humble home. I never understood the trend toward open kitchens where a chef's mess is the backdrop for dinner . I think most are disappointed that it features very few practical ideas for people that are really living in small space because 500ft+ for a single person is luxurious. Most people living in cramped cities have in average just less than 150ft per person, less than a third of what is featured here. The tiling and additional openings to increase light penetration is very nice though.

Tiu, tiu, tiu, what a smart architect you are, designing so cleverly this small, small space, a bit bigger than my two room and separate kitchen apartment with a bathtub and much more of storage space? Wow, you put a presentation shelf for decorative objects in an archway, where noone can see them? And TV in 90 degree position to a coach? Perfect, I wouldn't think about it. The stuy area feels like one of those tiny nightmare cubicles. It's right at the entrance, has barely any light and there isn't enough space to properly work. I personally would've prefered to turn this area into a proper coats and shoes area and instead have a little foldable table at the sofa or just work at the dining/kitchen area. Overall, beautifully solved. The lighting, the colours, the divisions are all great. Also, for once, indeed enough storage in living room, bedroom and kitchen. The bathroom is gorgeous. My concern is with those stairs, both in terms of stability and placement. They may be a focal feature but they seem to also be very much in the way as you enter the appartment. I would have used the study as a wardrobe instead, placing shoes, coats etc. there instead of in the upstairs dressing room. The dressing room seems much more spacious and better suited to place a desk plus it has natural lighting. The kitchen splashbacks, while beautiful, are very impractical since the mirrors will require constant cleaning. And, regarding the bedroom, I don´t see much point in those lower windows. They aren´t needed for light as the room already has natural light from the skylight, and I wouldn´t feel entirely comforable with a whole wall of breakable glass so close to the bed. I would have extended the bedroom floor across those beams and used the lowest bit of the space for additional storage.

I love the functionality combined with warmth, logic, and livability. The storage created makes it clean-looking and the kitchen is a dream. My standard always is, do I want to live there? This is one of the few times I will wholeheartedly answer yes.
@braria9855
@braria9855 2 года назад
Exactly. Or "would I be -willing to / capable of- living there" Too often it's way too impractical, the washing machine makes sounds in the living room, there's not enough storage, shelves are too open/bare (making it hard to keep a small space tidy-looking cause irl they must be stacked to their max :D ), kitchens are sensless, too much glass everywhere (which will require nonstop maintanance), illogical lighting for nighttime or overcomplicated solutions that require complex daily tasks (like making and storing your bed, or weird access to daily items, including clothes...)

So well done - félicitations à l’architecte! This is one project where I’d love to see the floorplans/design evolution - what was disregarded design- and materials-wise, what colours were suggested, etc. It’s lovely.

One of the very few apartments that I would actually love to live in. They were able to plan the storage very well and, as someone who lives in a 30 sqm apartment, that is very rare!

I love this apartment the colour scheme is very cheerful.So much space for everything .When I saw the stairway it looked too flimsy to me but it works perfectly well. The only issue I thought was that if she’s walking in stockings or socks it might be slippery .I’m glad she found this architect.👏👍🇦🇺

This is a stunning apartment. I could move into this place and really not change a thing. In reality I'd probably change up what I put in a couple of the spaces, but the colors and the lighting and the design choices are **chef's kiss**. I work from home, so I would probably put my office where the dining table is (or flip it with the LR. Or even put it in the attic space. The table in the kitchen with the bench seating is all the dining I would need. I am in love with the staircase! I'm going to watch this all again, it's so wonderful... even the view out the window is awesome.

agree - I suspect I'd end up working on the dining table, and use the "office space" as a storage area to put work stuff in when it was time to relax. Am in love with the archway.

Absolutely! I’d have switched the office space with the laundry in the attic for larger and more quiet space, natural light. Laundry located downstairs is more natural next to wardrobe near entrance.
@chezmoi42
@chezmoi42 2 года назад
@@aselshilikbaeva224 The entry closet is for coats and cleaning supplies. The bulk of laundry comes from upstairs: sheets, towels, clothing. You can easily carry up a few dish towels and napkins, but carrying all the rest down and back up again is a chore.

Superb layout, colours and - here I go again - finishing. Looks like they really paid attention to the details here. I'd probably have preferred no dressing room and instead a full-height ceiling in the living room just to get that sense of freedom (so that you can look down into the living room from the bedroom) but that's a personal preference - I understand other people wanting to maximize floor space. Loved this.

I've watched a few NTS videos (okay okay, I've watched them all 🙈) and this is by far my absolute favourite! The entire apartment is absolutely exquisite, and the colours and mood throughout are like a warm hug after a long day. There were so many beautiful details that didn't even get mentioned, like the custom door coming out of the bedroom and the built-in seating in the kitchen. Great work to the architect & designers! And of course, another great video made by the NTS team.

I love it! Finally a house with some color on the walls, it has such a warm atmosphere. I't's just the right size, there's no waste of space but nothing seems too cramped or a compromise. I really like the match of the pink furniture and green tiles in the bathroom, and the sofa. And the dressing room is really smart, having the washing machine and dryer right next to the clothes. Love it love it love it

This one is a keeper. Love almost everything about it and I absolutely adore that staircase. The fish scale inspired bathroom tiles also nice touch. Although the workspace not quite conducive, a bit cramped and looks claustrophobic. Otherwise, this is very well thought out deco I've seen in NTS for a while. Kudos to the designer 🙌🏼

Obi Dean>> As a number of people have commented about the cramped workspace I thought I'd toss in that my wife has been working from home since our lockdowns began in Feb. 2020. First, she carved out an area in our guest room/my sewing-beading area. In other words, "The Office". Over time, working from home revealed that everything could be conducted on a smartphone and a laptop with headphones for Zoom meetings. Eventually, she moved out to a wee corner tucked in next to our fireplace in the den area and except when one of cats insists on sitting on the keyboards, that's all the space she requires and she prefers "the commute"--i.e. it's closer to the coffee fixing place. Our homeowner here has the pass through for coffee and other things. Et voila!
