I didn’t even realize Hbox had won until you said so seven minutes into the video. I thought Cody won the whole time. Now that’s an effective reverse pop off.
Yeah, it's one of those things where you have to go off of the context clue of the Jigglypuff winning and have the knowledge that Hbox basically owns the character Jigglypuff when it comes to the competitive scene.
he mentions the loss multiple times before that, and gives the groundwork for what a reverse pop off is and what hbox normally does when he wins. did you sleep thru the first 6 min? 😂
Same, I should have realized the puff won, but I completely thought Cody won there. And beating hbox is a good enough reason to pop off there, so it made sense.
@@KumoGoesFast That’s the power of a truly insane reverse pop off. It deafens the ears. It blinds the eyes. It’s hard to recover from a pop off that powerful, if you ever recover at all.
I'd honestly wager that's probably why HBox was so chill about the contact in the moment, beyond them just being friends. If he recognized what happened, he's not gonna question needing to be used for stability. It would be so hilarious if that little pat on his cheek was him being like, "oh you sweet summer child, you'll be going to sleep now."
HBox: Yare yare daze. Omai wa mo shindeiru. Cody tried to intimidate HBox, but when he looked in his eyes and the shades came off, he couldn't handle H's menacing aura. The Pillar Men theme started playing in his head and he recognized that it was folly to attempt to usurp the king, as did his physiology.
My guess is that what Cody is saying to Hbox is asking him for support, which is probably why Hbox leans more into Cody when he properly wraps his arm around him
This was the funniest anti-climax of all time. When a streamer initiates a scream you expect it to persist, but then he just gently began to drift off into the side and then… silence
i posted this in another video already but just so people know the truth of the situation (so misinformation doesn't spread), as somebody who knows both of them personally, im confident they both thought it was hilarious, and as Plup said, this was planned from the start for next time Hbox beat Cody, as a funny reverse-popoff of sorts. (People looking from the outside won't know that though, and might form an incorrect judgements/opinions). Watching from home I actually couldn't stop laughing for minutes lol.
Your community is embarrassing, every time it gets brought up in any capacity it's some awkward, childish or just straight up (how kids like to call it today) cringe.
Knowing nothing about either player, I can say, I loved this. Both of them clearly respect each other very much. The whole interaction seemed really…loving. And I think that’s great. We need some more love like this in gaming.
Thats how I view it! It just kinda felt like a goofy 'im gonna meme at my friend before he can meme at me' moment. HBox checked on him and they giggled about it afterwards while Cody was recovering. I wouldn't be surprised if Cody was congratulating him in the moments afterwards.
Unfortunately Cody has a history of being a dick about HBox on his stream, even if they’re “friends” in tournament, I just don’t like the guy cause of his lack of sportsmanship.
After learning how physically demanding popoffs are, I must imagine that Charlie had to take a thousand year nap to recharge is ki after his legendary "Yeah, baby!" popoff.
Tip from a metalhead: If you ever feel lightheaded after doing something physical, freeze yourself, don't move for some time. You can see metal artists do this after headbanging.
I was so confused as to why Cody looked so weird, but as soon as the clip played again with the context that he was about to pass out, I absolutely lost it laughing
If this is "one of the better moments" that's kinda pathetic to any outsider looking into eSports lol. I think eSports has a few moments that top this. Maybe for the smash community this is one of the better moments
Ok but if Cody fainted onstage after the pop-off it'd be immediately concerning but would make the moment orders of magnitude more legendary in hindsight
For as much as I love the moment, a part of me reeeeaaaally wanted Hbox to counter the counter-popoff even harder and just have 2 men screaming, jumping around flailing their arms in every direction
99% sure nobody could have handled HBox shouting back the venue was already shakey and weak from the sheer shock of Cody doing this. Fucking woulda been an Emperor's Haki moment from One Piece if HBox unleashed his true power
*2 Friends having a joke with one another incorporating their years of history together* People on Twitter who've never seen something close to friendship before: "THIS MAN IS UNSTABLE AND A DANGER AND A CLOWN! A CLOWN I TELL YOU!"
Charlie’s beautiful mix of sarcasm and dead pan delivery are the one thing that could make me understand the lore behind what i first thought to be a kid having a mental breakdown on stage lol.
it makes sense that he would almost faint. i remember when i was younger i screamed so violently i got a horrible nosebleed and was lightheaded for hours, i can definitely see it happening
i can relate with cody when it comes to extending the bit for a little too long, but the core concept of the reverse pop-off on hbox is perfect and the fact that it worked is unbelievably funny
At first I thought cody was the one who won. I thought it was poor sportsmanship. Then when I realized the roles were reversed, and they’re good friends and this was planned. That makes it extremely funny
@@athingwhichexists Does Charlie do anything to fight these bots? Because I swear there are at least 2 on every single comment that has over a 100 likes on his channel
This was just fun, goofy, good sportsmanship gaming. Without context you'd think one was being a douche cause he won, but it's the total opposite. This is the type of eSports moments I enjoy watching.
honestly i know that feeling when you get up too fast and can’t see anything but your falling shit is scary, it makes you just grab everything and anything to stay up because you literally can’t see anything like the world doesn’t exist for a second and you don’t know what’s going on, he probably had that rowdy when he jumped up because that’s how i look whenever i get up quick and pass out 💀
I can totally relate to that. Getting up too fast after sitting down for a while, vision goes dark and you gotta sit down for a moment till it stops. Iron deficiencies in your body can make those little moments so much worse. Gotta eat your green vegetables.
quick frame data analysis: at 2:22.22 on the clock both of the prepared to pop off, hungrybox was first but on frame 7 of hungrybox's popoff ibdw popoff-canceled hungrybox's popoff cause hungrybox to be stuck in stun lag, thus ending his popoff with ibdw's own popoff
A counter pop-off is something that should sound so obvious for someone to attempt at some point, but it's JUST out there enough that I didn't think it were possible. It's creative and I would say was done perfectly. It was all done in good jest and HBox deciding to play along made it oddly wholesome. ...That, and he clearly saw the guy was about to faint the same way he did, so he had to stick around to be support. But that just ends up making it more wholesome after the fact.
I don't watch Smash Esports, neither do I know these two players. I was legitimately confused when I first saw the clip. But after knowing all the contexts, I think it's pretty wholesome. It's that toxic wholesomeness or some shit that I dig. Thanks Charlie.
I like the idea of a counter pop off but I thought it would've been hilarious if Cody didn't stop, but joined Hbox's pop off. Maybe this has happened in eSports/Melee before, I don't really follow anything like that, but the idea of a winner and loser both popping off together sounds like a fun time.
I'm guessing the faint was, in some part, due to the fact that his heart was already racing from the adrenaline of the tourney and the nerves about doing the preemptive pop-off.
Or even the adrenaline from actually performing something you've been working on for a while. I know I'd be worried I'll trip and fall on my face, or if people end up clowning me for it in general, lol...
I love how hbox was about to pop off, you hear the initial iconic hbox screech, but then he slowly silences as Cody performs the frame perfect tech: the pop off cancel. This is genuinely one of my favourite moments in smash its hilarious And then it's even funnier than IBDW always enjoyed watching hbox pop off, and laughed at hbox fainting, then he apparently almost fainted on stage himself
My theory: the pop off is the release of energy saved that was meant for the game. Them almost fainting after a pop off means they were ready to die for the match.
i've been in the melee community for almost a decade at this point and this is genuinely the most wild thing i've ever seen come form this scene and it's fucking hilarious. the only thing that even comes close is the guy who threw a crab at hbox mid popoff
i've had similar nearly-fainting reactions from screaming too hard at concerts, getting the wobbly legs and nearly collapsing under my own excitement. thank GOD i don't go into the pit or else i'd die probably(not clickbait)
You can tell during that awkward transaction; he had enough of Hbox popping off all the time, so he authorized to pull an uno-reverse card and did a reversal pop-off. With all my years attending to competitive aspects, I have never been so confused.
Hungry box truly is the greatest person to ever pop off, he won that title the day he became the only person I've ever seen to pass out from popping off so hard
I think the fainting or lightheadedness is due to the straining of all the face / head muscles and yelling for an extended duration. I think it stops blood flow to the brain combined with loss of breath.
"If you’re easily the best at your school and your school is considered cool AF, you can actually buffer a fully-charged pop-off that is so powerful it will kill everybody you love." - Deep Leffen HBox might actually be holding back
The fact he fainted makes sense now it did come off really weird how he kept holding him, i think i even see him whisper that he fainted and box smiles
I love your videos, they are so well organized and you explain events in a way that counters toxic Twitter arguments and the way that you explain your opinions blends so well. Super entertaining to watch, thank you for doing what you do.
This was more awkward than anything, like trying to go for an embrace and the other person didn't reciprocate, or going for a fist bump and your friend went for a high-five. Like, the audience didn't know if cody was trying to attack hbox or hug him, then hbox just didn't even know wtf to do. These two are most certainly not friends.
My kids called their farts "pop-offs" when they were smaller, so having you say stuff like "he's well know for his pop-offs" and "*guy* fainted cos he popped off so hard at a tournement" brought a rather childish grin to my face 😊
Today's fact: For every child born in Wales since April 2014, the Welsh Government have donated a fruit tree to Ugandan families, to celebrate the birth or adoption of every child.
It's good to hear that it was a joke instead of an act of spite. Imo, a lot of people thought it was out of genuine disdain because IBDW has gotten frustrated on stream after losing to HBox, saying that he's bad at the game, etc. Honestly, I'd be surprised to see a competitive smash player who hasn't said or at least thought similar things. Smash games are stressful and Melee is the most stressful one of them all, what with its brutal speed and skill required. It sucks to see people take these things out of context and use them to fuel a narrative that is ultimately unhealthy for both the players and the spectators. Also, hearing the video continue after Charlie said "And that's about it" really caught me off guard.
It's called orthostatic hypotension. When you sit for a long time and then suddenly stand up, your blood pressure tanks. Add that to the fact that you're jumping around, screaming, and straining yourself. You can understand why he almost fainted.
Just getting up too fast after sitting gaming for a couple hours. I've almost blacked out and fainted. That feeling is soo crazy too I feel like that's how death is gonna feel when we die. Loss of all control 💀😎💯
This moment will definetly be a mainstay for "Awkward/Cringe eSports moments compilation" from the initial lost, the counter pop off all the way up in hbox face, the weirdly homoerotic way ibdw was feeling up hbox as he was about to faint is just pure compilation food.
This shows how much energy hbox has lmao, Cody wasn’t able to handle the power that a pop off have or underestimated how strong a pop off is, truly legendary
