As a visiting player to Los Angeles, he was cheered for quite the patriotic act. A future Dodger and forever an American hero, Rick Monday will always be linked to this day.

I'm sure he had no idea then that almost 50 years later people would consider his act equal to hitting a game 7 extra-innings grand-slam to win the world series. But that home-run would just be baseball. What Rick did was so so much bigger than any occurrence related to the outcome of any sporting event.

Like the people at Shea Stadium who screamed “U.S.A." for an age when word came that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by U.S. Special Forces? You mean those kind of people? And the New Yorkers who stood in the streets of the city, cheering the police and firemen who raced to the Trade Center. Or the people in my neighborhood, the Upper West Side, one of the most Democratic in NYC, who went to the local firehouse the night of the attack and stood there and cried while the families of the firemen who’d just been murdered sat there looking dazed, along with the survivors. The firemen were mostly Republican, the people in the neighborhood were Democrats, and all embraced each other. That was America. No Donald Trump garbage. Just people who knew what a tremendous loss the death of the most heroic among us was to everyone American, Republicans, Democrats, Christians, Jews, all of us. And there was no fraudulent, selfish bastard, always desperate to be a cool New Yorker, a guy who was pro-choice and is the greatest con artist from this city, to ruin it for Americans, including the people who think he gives a damn about them instead of money and power.
