The Greatest Play In Baseball - Rick Monday Saves U.S. Flag

On April 25, 1976 at Dodger Stadium, Rick Monday of the Chicago Cubs, grabbed and secured the American flag from two individuals as they were attempting to burn our flag in the middle of the playing field. It was an outstanding display of American Patriotism. Due to the numerous references to 'allah' and insistence that their chairs be faced in a certain direction while being questioned, the two, a father and his son, were described to be muslims by several security personnel including an off duty police officer in attendance at the game who went down to the security room soon after the incident. Others claim that the two, William Errol Thomas and his brother, later corrected to be Thomas and his 11 year old son (not identified due to his age) were war protesters. Others claimed Thomas escaped from a mental institution, others said that his wife was being held illegally and against her will in a mental institution and various other claims. Regardless, it's probably safe to say that what they attempted to do was a disgrace to our American Flag and every American citizen. Aside from public ridicule, Thomas incurred minimal legal actions for his actions. He was fined $60 for trespassing and placed on probation for a year. No formal charges were filed against his 11 year old son who was treated as a juvenile offender. Something that was also confusing was obtaining the flag burner's real name. Security personnel at the stadium said that his name was William Errol Morris. However, the police report and court records all list him as William Errol Thomas, Aka William Errol Morris (Criminal courts building record Case# 31-543367 Thomas, William Errol, Jr. Violation Sec. 602, P.C. one year probation and ordered not to enter Dodger Stadium during probationary period.) His attorney in the public-defender's office said that Thomas was American Indian, a transient living out of the back of his car. DMV yielded no information nor did the registrar of voters or Veterans Administration. The Bureau of Indian Affairs in Phoenix had no information nor were there any military records.

I briefly spent time with Rick in 1977 . When a young fan asked Rick for an autograph he kinda' thumbed through the book and asked the young man if he had his mom's autograph, do you have your dad's autograph, do you have your teachers autograph ? After he asked the questions he told the young man that he would sign his book but he thought that since his parents and teachers were more important than he was the young man should get their autographs. The boy said "yes sir I will"' Great guy with tremendous humility.

I have watched this Rick Monday video numerous times. I was a Marine stationed at MCB Quantico in April 1976. I have said it before Rick Monday; that day, you did your Corps, your Country, your family & yourself a great service that will never be forgotten. I have a porcelain figurine commemorating that day in my bookcase. You did yourself proud. Semper Fidelis

I hope you won't take what I'm about to say as weakness, but watching this brings tears to my eyes and chokes me up. I was in the Army overseas when this incident took place. I listened to the Cubs games on the Armed Forces Radio Network or Short Wave Radio, whichever I could find the games on. I listened to this taking place, and I remember the announcer being very intense and graphic about the two protesters coming out onto the field and trying to burn the flag. I was livid! I was hoping to hear that players were beating the hell out of those two protesters. I was a medic in the Army, and I had seen way too many guys who had lost limbs, were burned beyond recognition,or were otherwise going to remember for life their sacrifices they had made protecting that flag and what it stood for. I wrote to Rick Monday to tell him just how much his actions meant to those soldiers and the veterans of every that we've fought in, as well as those who served in peacetime as well. On July 2, 1976, I got a letter at mail call in a Chicago Cubs envelope. It was a letter from Rick Monday saying how he felt about our flag and all it stood for.He thanked me for letting him know that it mattered. That letter is among my life's treasures in a plastic envelope where I keep my important papers in a strong box. I am eternally grateful to Rick Monday for his actions, and maybe that he got to the flag before Tommy LaSorda got to those two guys and beat the living hell out of both of them. Thanks to everybody who feels about the flag the same way we do. God Bless America.

@@tomshea8382 Yes Tom, that Helps... my original statement still stands. Burning the American Flag is disrespectful, and those that chose to burn it do not deserve to reside in the U.S. Many do not understand the disrespect. That is my opinion, and I served my country like a few of us do in order to protect our freedom.

@@MMPPunch Maybe, 1) Maybe, 2)you're dead fucking wrong. Protest isn't illegal, nor has it ever been grounds for deportation

One of the most glorious and awesome personal moments for any player, in any sport, period! Those two JERKS came within a hair of their desired outcome, but you snatched it away from them! Rick Monday: 1 JERKS: 0

Thank you Mr. Monday for your great act of patriotism! I just showed this video to my three young girls and it was a great opportunity to show them that we are to respect our country and it's flag! As a U.S. Army veteran and military spouse, I was touched to see this and saddened that we don't see more acts like these in this day and time. God bless and thanks again!

Thanks Rick!! I was a little kid then.... but had I known about it, I would have bought every pack of baseball cards I could find... until I got yours - and framed it in an American Flag. God Bless you Rick - and the U.S.A. :)

Not going to lie, I would have bulldozed them just for trying to ruin my part of the field, which is center. If you want to practice your 'freedom of speech', do it off the field.

... I love Vin Scully's angry tone in describing what happened. "I think a guy was gonna set fire to the American flag!! Can you imagine that?!?!" You have to realize Vin almost never broadcasts in that tone of voice, at least in all the years I've been listening to him.
