Nice job! Did you consider using the lava rocks for fire pits or BBQ grills or would there be too much surface area to cover? I could envision using these for a small waterfall project - cemented together with black colored mortar and also incorporating waterproof LEDs and ultrasonic foggers to simulate a lava flow at timed intervals.
Yes, I thought about using small fire pit/BBQ lava stone, but ultimately I figured they'd just look like a whole bunch of small BBQ stones glued to the wall. I wanted something that looked more intentional, if that makes sense. And yes, I've toyed with the idea of incorporating ultrasonic foggers, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
that wall looks great! Have you checked into using El Wire for your lava effect? I have seen it used in costumes and other applications, but have no experience using it myself. It does appear to give off a more uniform glow however. Just a thought.
Oh, wow! I had not heard of El wire up to this point, but a quick search of the interwebz has me intrigued. This may be exactly what the Dr. ordered. Thanks for the suggestion!
No, I didn't. I obtained different LED strands to get one with the color and fade controls I wanted, but I didn't do any mockups. After I already had it built I saw these LED neon ribbons the Wood Whisperer used for his gaming desk. That's a bit thicker than I wanted but the effect is spot on. I might've gone with that had I seen it in time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KgRaLxXWj2o.html
