My experience with hydrangeas (Baltimore 7B) is that regardless of the tag, hot afternoon sun destroys them. Panicles are even "iffy" but the roll of the dice with those seems to be less of a gamble. I've even had sun tolerant plants struggle in hot afternoon sun. Heat is one thing - but the sun is another. Thanks for showing us all of the beauty as well as the problems - we learn so much this way!! Some channels only show all of the beautiful plants and projects - your channel is so enjoyable to watch 🙂
A great trick to get rid of those fire ants without spraying or sprinkling chemicals….get a small plastic container(like an old cream cheese container with a lid) and drill a couple holes about an inch from the bottom so the ants can get in. Put a spoon of sugar, a spoon of borax and some water then mix well. Then add a chunk of bread, put the lid on, and place directly by the nest. The adult ants eat the liquid, and they take the solids into the nest to the babies and Queen. Nest should be gone in a week. With this heat, refill the container in a couple days if necessary. Hope this helps with your fire ants, it definitely helped me with mine!

Hi Jenny and Jerry,, I have been so excited to share a tip on hanging baskets, even coconut fiber baskets... it's so simple. Before you put soil in your baskets, Try putting baby disposable diapers in first. They keep water from drawing out to fast, aswell holds water for your plants. It cuts down water, possible mess, time and costs. I was so excited about sharing this idea with other gardeners. You all are my favorite gardeners .. Happy Gardening,,,, Randall

Thank you Jenny for walking us through the water soluble fertilizer routine! Using those cute PW buckets like you do is GREAT IDEA! I’ve been mixing 2 gallon watering cans, using a 5 gallon bucket is less work and using those little buckets makes it even easier!! We went from extremely hot and dry, to extremely hot, humid and downpours everyday here in Denham Springs Louisiana. My pour garden has suffered really badly. Jenny, save your hydrangea blooms to decorate for the holidays! They are beautiful on a mantle and in the Christmas tree! Poor things, I’m having the same issues with my mop heads since cutting a tree down this Fall. This summer has been a hard one down south! So glad you are showing the problems and how you solve them. Growing roses on a trellis is a lovely idea but daunting to me because of pruning. Maybe you can show us that in the future.
You mentioned that you treat your gardens for Japanese beetles to stop the grubs. They seem to become a bigger problem in my Missouri garden every year. Can you please address this in more detail and maybe do a RU-vid video on this? I'm always cautious about treating with insecticides due to promoting bird and pollinator habitats. I'm an "old" gardener, but still learn so much from your videos! Thank you for being a bright spot in my day.

25 years ago when I took the Michigan State Master Gardener course, we were told that when putting mulch on flower beds you should always stay at least an inch from the plants, shrubs or trees.
Nice work! Things are looking good 💚 Fire ants do in fact sting, from their abdomen, as well as bite to keep themselves latched on. I'd guess the arborescens are struggling b/c of the sun mainly. When you see them growing wild they're most always by a creek and under some tree cover. A paniculata would be a good choice like you said. 💚

Jenny I planted two new incrediball hydrangeas this year and they both look like your middle ones. I garden in zone 6 . We have been very hot and dry this year. Everything is gorgeous! I had a problem also with my hydrangeas and they were panicles they were getting burnt i moved them in landscape near my patio they get sun but not to the point where they would burn and doing beautiful!
Hi Jenny. Thank you so much for showing us your struggle with the incrediball hydrangeas. Ours (full sun, zone 7b) started doing this exact same thing but earlier in the season. We ended up digging the plant up and placed it in a pot to see if it will rebound. Once you figure out what is going on with them, I would love to hear. I love the plant and blooms in containers, but I'm afraid to try them in the ground again as this is when they die. Thank you so much for all your love and information.

My Annabelle started looking the same way and it was almost a full year in the ground and I thought the heat was too much here in MD even though the rest were fine. Gently did a tug on it upright and it came right up! voles ate the almost entire root ball but left the others alone . they came in from far away and tunneled in since I had put lite gravel around the base of the plant. I stayed castor oil down and they seemed to have the left so for now
I am impressed, woman, with all you got completed on your mental to-do list. I do find I accomplish more when I have a chore list, but I no longer beat myself up when I only get partway through it. I'm 65 and learning about my limitations. We are currently getting much-needed rain so there goes the rest of my list. But the ground will be so much easier to work after this soaker. I recently planted some hydrangeas and was sad to see they are looking stressed. I put an entire 2.0 cu. ft. bag of mulch around them and left the hose dribble on each one most of the day. This rain should really help. I hope that's not too much mulch. I'll keep an 👁️ on it. When I was weeding I noticed some critter dug away the back side of a plant exposing the root ball. Dang varmint! I have a collection of stones I've unearthed. I'll "mulch" the plant with those to deter future digging. I know about fire ants having lived in FL 50 years ago. We have ants almost as aggressive in MN. So bitey!

Here in 7b Alabama I have a beautiful hedge they do require shade in the summer. Spring they are ok but as soon as temps increase they have to have protection. Shirley

Omg Jenny, the same thing happened to my one of my bobo hydrangea. It was big and beautiful and one day I noticed it withering and I checked the water and it was fine. After 2 days of checking on it several times throughout the day it wasn’t getting any better, so I dug it up and put it in a pot with fresh soil and biotone and kept it in the shade and watered. After 3 days it started putting on new growth immediately. That particular one was in more afternoon sun than the others. Not sure if this heat in the south was the cause or not, I live in Gates’s county North Carolina and the heat has been awful! Good luck Jenny I really hope they make it! 👍👍👍
An easier option than the rose ties would be orchid clips (or the super tiny hair clips). On my climbers I can clip the branches to the trellis. Super easy.
Jenny, thank you for addressing the hydrangea issues. I'm having the same issues with two of my limelights that I have not had issues with before. My mophead hydrangeas are fine. I know we are having the same heat issues here in North Texas area, but I'm thinking either overwatering issues with mine or a pest. We have heavy clay soil here too. And like yours, I only have two that are showing the same issues as yours and the others look fine. Will see if pruning and fertilizing with RoseTone help mine too. Those pesky fire ants are not my friends either! Ouch! Jealous of your rain! Please send us some here in Texas. Love your channel and watch you daily! Thank you so much for being "there" for us.
Great video. Yes I just recently found fire ants in my front yard. I was mowing the lawn and there was an ant hill. I step on it to push it down and oh my goodness totally got bitten. Ouch. Jenny, LUV, LUV, you Jerry, Laura and Aaron. Perhaps you have heard of this tip for the dreaded Fire Ants: sprinkle grits or corn meal around the mound of the ants. They come out, gather these and take them into their nest. Kills every one that eats them. The rest will actually move their nests elsewhere. You can actually back them off your property (at least the flower beds) but requires diligence on the gardeners part. This actually worked for those of us in Central Texas when the ants were advancing through Texas. It works best in the heat of summer (grits, etc. needs to stay dry). Of course, the ants are here to stay but can be controlled without poisons. Having "shared" property with this ant, I would also like to point out that they are excellent soil aerators. Chuckle. Jenny, my limelight that is 9 years old and in full late afternoon sun and done fantastic even in this heat and a brick exterior wall behind it. Now, my firelight hasn’t faired as well. They come out beautifully then the heat hits them… will they have be finding another home in my gardens.
2 of My limetta arborescens look similar. They do get a blast of hot afternoon sun and this summer in the NC Piedmont has been so hot. Maybe too much. I’ll prune mine and see how they do next summer. I want to give them one more season.

I love Proven Winners plants and wouldn't think of buying any other, but this year I am noticing the PW plants are all struggling. It may be the extreme temperatures, but it is very noticeable. I religiously use PW slow-release fertilizer when planting and the PW water soluble fertilizer. I hope it's not the quality of the plants and I will have better luck next year with the weather. Hi Jenny. I am NOT a rosarian. I have been studying videos by Paul Zimmerman and reading his book, Everyday Roses. I think what I would do in your situation is plant clematis to go up the trellis instead of trying to train the roses up the trellis. I saw Paul showing how to take long rose canes and bring the tip into the base of the rose to create a rounded mound. Just a thought. As for the fire ants, I have found a mixture of orange oil, molasses, and soapy water poured with a strong stream over the hill kills the ants and feeds the soil. Fire ants are HORRIBLE!!
Mrs. Jenny I think you have too much sun on those failing hydrangea. I'm in zone 6b south west Ohio and all my smooth hydrangeas are in partial shade and do fantastic. Even rebloomed when the deer ate the tops off. I'd replace them with your favorite variety of paniculata 😉 Thanks for all the great videos your house gardens and nursery look fantastic and love the new trellises!
Voles have taken some of plants out. Also, we have had so much rain and humidity some of my plants are molding away. I am in the Northern Neck of Virginia.
Another interesting video. I learned so much. But I might have missed info about the hydrangea. Why did you cut the blooms off the one that was growing so well and was healthy?
At about 4:00 you start discussing the InvincIbelles. I have seen so many people struggling with their hydrangeas this year. Yellow foliage being a big problem. It’s been a very wet year, but also very hot. It’s all confusing. I planted three Lime Light Primes this season and they struggled. Doing ok now, but I was worried.
My first thought about the problem was reflected heat off the patio wall. Perhaps the angle of how the sun hits may be a factor. I lost my two in ground planted DA roses due to the intensity of reflected heat this summer. Ultimately I have realized I have no choice but to stick to pot planted roses in my area. I hope you let us know what the problem is when you both sort it out.
