The tubes on the trees are to protect them from browsing animals and other dangers as the trees grow. the wooden stakes are for support.

Great video, Tom. The final woodland shot is a triumph. Good to see you're better. By the way, I think those plastic tubes are primarily there to stop the deer from eating the young trees.

Not just deer, but a diversity of woodland and heathland animals. There are growing moves to stop using plastic, but the alternatives are not yet as durable and cost-effective.

@@fotogfitzfoto412 I saw an article a few months back that one of the bigger organisations (maybe National Trust, maybe not) were using tubes that were organic and would degrade naturally in around 5-7 years time by which time the trees should be relatively sturdy, the tube apparently splits as the tree grows and ultimately rots providing nourishment for the tree. I'll see if I can find the article.

There is nothing that Americans hate more than a sincere apology. Who really cares about why your "production values" slide? Just be you and all will be okay. Really, your first videos are every bit as good as your latest. New equipment and higher production values don't mean a damn! It's your love of photography, your excitement at doing it, and your sense of humor that make your videos great.

The pano with the bright negative space as a photo was good but if it was used as a poster with a message written in the negative space it would be very useful. My book two has be shipped and I will receive it on January 6th. Looking forward to reviewing it. Thank you for all you do and I hope 2023 is your best year so far. I find it interesting how people default to the "Rule of thirds"/ offset compositions. You've wonderfully demonstrated that balance can be created using symmetry as well. Great image.
@johnsmith1474
@johnsmith1474 Год назад
I would encourage photographers to never ever in their learning years use a rule to take a photo. It's insane. You use your vision to see until you are stimulated to shoot because what you see moves you. You go to the great art history books to learn and infuse yourself with artistic ideas. If after some years of that you still produce crap, or if you have a commercial necessity then go to rules. There is no shame in using a rule, but it's a good way to ruin original creative vision.
@chriskola3822
@chriskola3822 Год назад
@@johnsmith1474 I sort of think that learning the "rules" is pretty useful. They exist for a reason. You need at least a basic understanding of them to know how and when to break them. They shouldn't be written in stone and shouldn't be relied on all the time. Probably best to see them as guidelines.
@amalieemmynoether992
@amalieemmynoether992 Год назад
To quote Pirates of the Caribbean..."they're more like guidelines anyway" I agree that learning compositional tools is a great place to start. The problem is that many people learn just one...the rule of thirds. PS I should have read to the bottom of your reply Chris. It seems I just echoed what you said.🤣

Hi Tom, I was watching the begin of your video with the exceptional conditions and was laughing because it appeared like you tumbled by accident in such beautiful conditions. For myself I belived a lot of planning was involved and wished myself to see Thomas exited doing some planning with location, forecast, map study etc. Because I like those episodes most. Think it helps to tell a complete story. Later I realized it really was by accident XD ... and assume that you simply do not that much of planning those days. Cheers and keep on your very good work, its my highlight of the week. This and enjoying your calender. Looking forward to my copy of the new book.

Love the last image, the nursery of saplings watched over by the giants! Just thinking that the plastic tubes are more to protect the young trees from predators who would destroy them by eating the bark or the entire trunk. Rabbits, deer and many others see the nursery as a buffet. I speak from experience living in a rural area, I've resorted to similar technique in my garden🙂.
