That's the thing, teaching is a much harder yet much more important thing to do, as it doesn't necessarily require someone to be ABLE to do something, it requires them to understand and explain thoroughly the thing they are discussing, which requires a much deeper level of understanding than just knowing how to do it

Hey Stephan and Emily, I'm a less-than-a-month-old white belt and I stumbled upon your videos and seen this mount escape but never had the chance to use it until now. Today I rolled with another 2 white belts who were months ahead of me and physically larger than me (I'm a puny 5'4 63kg). Aim was to start mounted, person on top would try for a submission, guy on bottom would defend the submission or escape full mount then reset. I didn't have enough knowledge/experience to pull off any submissions properly, but with this one mount escape (which I've never practiced), I managed to escape their mounts repeatedly or keep them busy enough to avoid getting submitted at all. A tiny accomplishment, but I just wanna thank you guys for sharing your knowledge with us. Truly appreciate it. Btw, I bought and downloaded a couple of your apps and I find them extremely valuable, especially as a newbie to the ground game. Keep it up and keep em coming!

@nasri
@nasri 9 лет назад
+chrisXDfull Injuries happen to everyone, regardless of size/mass. Focus on the training and eat right. You don't need more mass for bjj. It will seem harder at first if you're rolling with larger opponents, but that will force you to get especially technical and tactical. I've been taught by instructors smaller in frame than myself and I've also been taught by 2m tall giants (to me, at least). And my experience has been that people with smaller frames will be particularly aware of small details in technique. Don't get me wrong, you still need some strength, but average joe strength is enough to start with because as time goes by you'll get stronger naturally.

Emily - Jess here. I'm pretty sure we met at an MMA expo in New York a few years back. At any rate... I taught at the UFC Gym for awhile. At the time Alexander Crispim was the head instructor there, and I learned a really cool technique from him that incorporates the same foot scoop for taking the back . Unfortunately, we live a bazillion miles away from one another, but if our paths should ever happen to wind up crossing again, remind me and I'll show it to you. Excellent vid by the way. ;-) Jessi Taran

Thank you so so much Emily and Stephan. I was always stumped when the big guys mounted me. And being the smallest in my gym I was completely screwed. Now this little tip has changed the game completely. Today I refused to submit and kept going into half guard at least. With a little more practice I will go for the sweep and reverse positions. Thank you so, so much. I had Stephans book from the Kindle store and will always look for more stuff on small people bettering bigger people.

As a guy who weighs 145 I always had the hardest time escaping mount with most of the guys in my gym who were all 170-200 at least. A friend showed me this technique and I absolutely love it. It's an incredibly deceptive way to achieve half guard if you are keeping their arms tied up with yours. You can work independently of your arms and use this technique. Great for nogi.

Keep in mind that this technique is designed to be used when rolling against guys who actually know jiu-jitsu. I actually use this in class, but if you are in a street fight and punches are involved, this shouldn't be your first line of defense. This technique could be used in a street fight if used as part of a combo, but the truth of the matter is that against most people who haven't trained jiu-jitsu, you probably wouldn't even need such a complex technique. Bridging, hand trapping, and basic elbow escapes should be enough.

I'd assume in a street fight, by the time they've mounted you, and you're on your back, you are taking hits to the head like its raining buckets, and you're a goner. How to survive street fights? Don't let them take you to the ground.

@MrScoob1988 yeah ive been in a full mount before, but the reality is to protect the areas they can severly damage like your teeth, your nose, and points that can even kill you, thanks to me not lowering my guard im still alive and still pretty. Im guessing this technique is mainly for grappling in some sort of tournament or supervised fight. Im sure its useful outside the ring but in some circumstances this move might be hard if the guy has already knocked you out cause you dropped your defence
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 12 лет назад
im not criticising this technique but alot of times these are being used is when someone is punching the crap out of your head, I know alot of MMA fighting is based on calm collected thinking, but taking away you defence for your head to move yourself doesnt seem right to me, since if you get knocked out through force of the other guy being bigger, it could be a threat. Is there a way to do this without lowering your defence?
@HiredGunGames
@HiredGunGames 12 лет назад
@HiredGunGames Believe me i can take alot of punches but when your brain is knocked out thats it, you cant control when it happens or if it happens or not. So what im asking is is there a way to do this while still protecting yourself from being knocked out outside the ring and possibly continously getting punched while being knocked out.

I'd like to point out that I've pulled this technique on bigger, stronger opponents that are trying to strike me. In order to demonstrate something to someone learning it and especially at the beginner level, you have to have a static partner. Otherwise, the student will not pay attention to the technique. You're right. Not all techniques are MMA friendly. This is one. Now you just look like a noob.

***** A sweep that only works in certain situations and with certain opponents, and that is very easily countered. There are no sweeps that work all the time, or are necessarily "more practical" and you need to have several under your belt, including this one, if you have any hope of having a well-rounded respond to the mount. Claiming otherwise simply makes it clear that you have very little experience on the ground.
@ManifoldSky
@ManifoldSky 10 лет назад
***** First of all, good job contradicting your first post. Second, good job with the straw man argument. Who said anything about grip fighting? (Not that it would matter if I did, as actively grip fighting interferes with punches to the face, per se.) While performing this transition to half, you have both hands free to either defend against strikes or perform your own strikes. All you have done is evince a complete ignorance of the mechanics of both this technique as well as the bump sweep (which, BTW, is very easily countered in a way that will land you in a much larger word of hurt).

First of all you need air so you do a two handed pluck to release his grip somewhat. You then bridge up and rotate over your shoulder which should put you on top of him. From there you land a couple of hammer punches on him to both shock and hurt him. After that you should run away, you do not want to stay in the fight

I only see this move working against unskilled white belts. Anyone with any skill would not even let her roll to her side, plus she would not be able to move his leg..........I say this from my experience, I'm a 1 strip BB weighing about 132 pounds and been training for 2.5 years..........Better off waiting for the big guy on top to try something then exploit the holes they leave, then a move like this may come into play. But if they are just laying static on you, your stuck...........

Stephan, I turned to this video because I saw Brock Lester demolish Min-Soo Kim when he had a mount. The problem in applying Emily's move appears to be that while you are seated low, over the pelvis section of Emily, Brock was sitting up high, so there was no way for Min-Soo Kim to push out Brock's leg & cross over it and free his knee out. What would you did in a case where an opponent is the size of Lester and sitting up high?

Whenever I start teaching a new class, the first thing I do is have everyone do sprints. After I while, I ask if anyone can tell me why we did them. The answers vary quite a bit, but I have only had one student ever get it right. I explain that unless you are forced to defend someone else, then running is almost always your best bet. Avoiding physical conflict is the only sure way of staying healthy...and out of trouble with the police. This escape is pure gold... then run! LOL!

Also can u really be surrounded by more than 3 guys, and can they really attack u al together without getting in eachothers way? Especially if moving around? Don't wait till ur surrounded i'd say. I once had a short brawl with three guys, they basically took turns, and we moved quite some distance from where it started. It was quite overwhelming, not sure I would have won had it continued, but luckily they stopped. Though I keep wondering if I could have possibly beaten them. Maybe not.
@MrIP1986

Not necessarily a style, and takedown defense is not necessairily making contact and sprawling, striking can help too for countering a takedown, and avoiding (aikido style), just moving in a smart way, dancing around keeping ur distance and fact is u are more mobile on ur feet than on the ground. if u don't let them surround u, how will they shoot together? , how are they going to sh Ofc if one of the assailants happens to have a better takedown/shoot than your avoidance/takedowndefence, u lose.
@Webaurant
@Webaurant 11 лет назад
Clinches in boxing and kickboxing are due to the clincher needing to either steady themselves from a knock or to rest due to fatigue. It's not an attempt by them to do a takedown. If a striker get's attacked by 3 men it's not a given that they're going to clinch, even so, if they do, BJJ isn't going to help. Whilst you're grappling with one the others are stuffing metal rods up your rear end. BJJ is certainly useful it's just that it's effectiveness is more suited to fair, even fights.
@MrIP1986
@MrIP1986 11 лет назад
That there is no style that is good against multiple opponents is not really true, there's something like takedown defense, so if a good fighter has this and knows how to move in a way that they can't surround him, I think he might stand a good chance against lesser skilled opponents. I myself have practiced aikido for about 10 years but now switched to muay thai and mma/bjj. Bjj/mma is more useful against one person, but aikido is more useful against multilple, lesser skilled opponents imo.

claiming that the Gracie challenge wasn't open to them and was a lie. If the Gracies tried to suppress the evidence, they couldn't because any fighter who won the fight legally owned the video tape and could distribute it (that was part of the wager). We don't see many tapes of the Gracies losing a challenge, although it did happen on a few occasions. That means that the only likely option is C.

No, I am saying that qualified people would have accepted the Gracie challenge because, if bjj is actually crap, then the challenge would have been easy money for qualified fighters. That leads us to conclude that A. qualified guys were blocked from entering, B. all evidence of the Gracies continually losing to qualified guys was suppressed, or C. the Gracies were able to beat the qualified guys as well. If they were blocked from entering, there would be hundreds of testimonials from people

You said that bjj could not work in a real world fight. Since you refuse to count anything with even the most basic rules as fighting, and you consider the Gracie challenge a giant conspiracy theory, I have provided you with another example of its effectiveness. You seem to be refusing to accept common evidence for whether or not a style is effective. Tell me, what evidence could I feasibly provide that would convince you that grappling is useful?
@jakeriggs9202

Like I explained, either the Gracies fought some qualified guys (obviously not all the guys were qualified, but some had to be) or there would be hundreds of witnesses to prove it was fake. And OBVIOUSLY nobody uses it as a stand alone system! It isn't supposed to be one! Just like only using boxing would SUCK as soon as I ran into a guy that could kick or wrestle well! actual fighters would have taken on the Gracie challenge, which would be stupid of them, because if bjj is actually crap, it would have been easy money. Great counter btw Stephan. Read my post again sir. I never said we train in Krav Maga. I said we train in everything. Since you are so experienced, why don't you tell us lowly bjj practitioners what the best martial art is? One discipline against one discipline. I know there are a lot of Gracie fans here who would agree that JJ, BJJ is the toughest stand alone martial art of them all. One discipline vs one discipline that is.

well what would you suggest as good mma? Surly ground work such as bjj is relative in a fight. Would it not be good to know how to get position and capitalise on that position. By the way most "Real" fights end up on the ground so its most likely a good idea to know how to fight on the ground. But of course bjj is some what an intelligent style of fighting which a non-educated delinquent like your self would find difficult to grasp. :)

haha dude, karate and those other 'self defence' techniques dont work in a real fight either...! UFC and other competitions that let you use practically any technique you like have proved that in a real fight where you just have to do what works things like karate go right out the window. Ironically however, (and something thats devastating to the point youre attempting to make) BJJ is used by almost everyone thats serious in mixed martial arts because it ACTUALLY WORKS in real fights.

You do not know martial arts. BJJ would help you out in a fight like any other art. But because someone is a world class competitor in BJJ it does not mean that they are good at street fighting. where there are NO RULES. what she is showing is helpful but BJJ is not the best at this stuff, do you know kung fu has been doing this stuff for 2000 years? BJJ lets see if these guys can take on 2 attacker at once. Yea go to the floor. BJJ looks very basic. Is it true that BJJ = Bascally Just Judo?

or she may have wasted countless years and money learning an art that didn't save her life. but at least she tried and committed to something that gave her life meaning, and hopefully she learns one thing from martial arts, that she is human and vulnerable and she respects physical violence. maybe she avoids trouble all together by being humbled by her art. but what does one learn by sitting at home criticizing others? she is a true warrior.

for all the naysayer internet critics/warrior tough guys who say this stuff does not work against a real life opponent who is resisting. like anything else in life there is no guarantee and yes she may take one punch and lights out, then she gets killed by head stomps. however, there is also a small chance that all her hours and years of training might, just might pay off and she lives to talk about how one technique out of hundreds she drilled through blood, sweat and tears saved her life.

The point of the video is to TEACH YOU the technique. It will do you no good if they simply break out into a full on practice roll or the guy on top begins to strongly resist. You would learn nothing because wouldn't recognize the techniques or know learn the Techniques at full speed. That is like watching a video of Mike Tyson showing you how to throw an effective Jab or hit a heavy bag properly and you saying "I guess your opponent is just gonna let you hit him".

bahahaha dude it seems llike you have never practice MMA before, you're right about one thing tho, this technique needs a noobish or too slow foe to be applied properly, other than that your comment is pure BS, i don't know you but i'm pretty sure by the way you think of this disciplines that your battle style could be striker (power punches only), you'd get a beaten in the ground.

Ok, so whats the point is of this defence ? I don't get it. Ok, it don't has to be for a street fighting, so for what ? If I good understood, jui jitsu is some kind of tournament fight right and If any1 will sit on you and will hold you there for a few second he's winning ? But still don't know whats the point is to train something if id doesn't have a chance to use it in a real fight.

Take the right leg and drop it over the attackers left ankle. If he's on the ball of his foot (it isn't flat) you can damage the ankle immediately. Use that point of leverage to roll hard to the right shoulder and push him over. Simple. The technique doesn't work as well if the person is well up towards your neck, but if you can get the back on your thigh on his ankle, you've got him! Go for it!

@HiredGunGames This is a good BJJ escape, but for MMA it does compromise your head. MMA, self defense, and BJJ are all different games that share some moves and concepts, but not all. You need to train specifically for your goal. Personally, I use a different strategy than this in MMA. I find that it is important to close your opponent's striking range down if you are mounted. Then you can try reversing or escaping the position.

@1iguerra The other works directly off the traditional one. Sometimes the person on top will get wise or will just through sheer chance stick their foot far enough out to the point where you cannot hook it with your own (again, talking about the traditional mount escape). In this case, you can trouble shoot easily into a half guard situation because there should be a gap with their leg. From there you essentially have their leg trapped to follow through with the traditional mount escape.

@lochn For self defense purposes, the majority of people you run into in a street situation do NOT train in any ground fighting techniques, or take the time to learn them (even to this day). So the traditional Gracie hip-bump escape is probably the best for that as it allows you to immediately wrap up either their neck, arms, or chest and pull them to you to prevent hits. Iv'e experimented around with it, and there is another if that one fails which works well off of it.

I don't think it had to be said, but of course that you will have some sort of set up to get to this move. You could make this work against alot of people if you had a good set up but that would be for another lesson. I think it is a great technique and used a variation of it myself many times against different opponents.

No, sadly you didn't. You said it twice. I hate to say it, but go reread it dude. Once in the beginning and once in the end of your comment. I'm sorry you're so angry though, I was just joking. It's really not that big a deal. We're here to talk about Jiu Jitsu, not typos. I really am sorry I offended you.

OK, stupid question (more so about the DVDs). The "How to Defeat the Bigger Stronger Opponent" 5 DVD set, will these techniques be as effective if you are a big person working with a weaker smaller opponent? I always try do work on not using size or strength to do techniques (if you need to be stronger than your opponent to do them, they aren't effective)...

I'm thinking the guy you replied to was talking about regular street fights. The average bloke on the street isn't going to know BJJ nor is his primary aim to take you down - my guess is they'd try and KO you. With that in mind a striker would do better than a grappler. If you were against 3 BJJ practitioners you're obviously going to lose.

even gave the Gracies their name to begin with, and I am sure some didn't, because it wouldn't have been necessary. Basically, if the Gracies faked the whole thing, we would have hundreds, if not thousands, of witnesses to prove that they did. Saying that all of those fights are faked is a ridiculous claim!

Even Krav Maga emphasizes getting the crap out of there as quickly as possible. There are tricks to surviving, but no martial art is going to be used in a successful escape besides one or two strikes and basic principles. Not even top Krav practitioners think that they could take multiple opponents their size. They get the crap out of there!

Stop trolling please!!!!! Why are u even ranting on a Bjj channel if u don't believe in it. Go some where else please!! Or even better go to a local bjj place and train for a day for free as most places offers trials before u join. See how well you do then come back a tell use about your experience. Anybody and sit in front of a computer and talk shit. Now Go Try IT.

yeah i get your point, some MMA wrestlers are amazing grapplers, im just saying that sometimes you don't have enough time or breath to do this escape properly, i'd rather bump my hips and throw the guy aside than do all this steps with high chances of lost my breath completely in the process, but then again, is all up to you and your JJ style.

I end up on my back alot as a beginner and i have never had an opponet yet that sits up on me like that in mount.. they are usually laying on top of me... :( with all their weight. i do try to frame the hip out and push them back as i try to bridge and hip escape.... this is good to see thanks for posting it :)

I don't really think that this was intended to be used in an MMA cage, lol. Your comment suggest that they are saying this technique is for a real fight or MMA cadge, but it's just a BJJ technique simple as that. This isn't the first time I have seen this. Also, every technique is harder when attempting during live rolling!
