The interesting thing i have noticed about this is that when she actually performs the technique at high speed, it looks like she is just simply flailing around and panicking but it is actually a technical and methodical way to get your arms out of the danger zone and get them back into position to get your guard back.

Great tip on shooting the arm up and out with your body to make the frame, I saw a vid a while back with Garcia doing this exact same escape except he swims the the left arm around for an under hook to take the back. Very good drill to practice escaping a tight side mount pin.

Great technique. I've seen a clip of Marcelo Garcia sneaking his arm through the armpit after a strong bridge and then putting both hands together to form a frame in order to maneuver. I've used it many times. I think that if the aforementioned technique did not work for me, Emily's very dynamic technique would be my Plan B. Nice technique to have in the toolbox.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's also had experience with more traditional forms of martial arts, but I come from an American Kempo background originally, before I moved on to a JKD/MMA gym, and the 'bushwhacking' motion described is actually quite similar to some of the knife-hand strikes I used in my Kempo days, and thus actually feels quite natural. Very interesting to the bits of the older styles still showing up in the new and shiny stuff.

@James Jacks true that. however for every move there is a counter. if he decides to mount that means he must move his leg therefore you have an opportunity to put him in half guard and then work to get a better position.

There are going to be risks involved any time you want to improve your position. I use this kind of movement frequently and yes, you have to be aware that the person on top may go for mount. However, in order to mount the person must modify his side control slightly before mounting. That is usually when you can feel it and then catch him in half guard or bridge and roll him over.

She mentions in the beginning, this is an option if and when your arms are already in this bad position, and you're looking for a way to get them in tight again.

@AnthonyMazzarella not saying you are wrong as im no BJJ master, but how would there be any risk of the arm triangle here ? The arm triangle requires your opponent can get their head under your armpit, I really dont see a good opportunity for this anywhere here.

im a 6'1" 200 pound slim guy, very top heavy. very slim if not boney legs (yea my legs are boney). im new to bjj and everyone seems to think that im 210-220. so iam always paired with huge people. and once im mounted, my goose is cooked. simply due to weight. this appears very effective. i will try it out tomorrow in practice. i will keep you posted thanks

She will catch your leg and go into half guard or put a butterfly hook in if you try to mount from that type of clamped-down side control. She will feel if you are about to go to mount because you will have to transition to a less clamped-down side control first.

I've just started jiu-jitsu and I'm the only girl in a class of men who all weigh at least 50lbs more than me. They all can get me to tap as soon as they apply their weight in a properly executed side mount - I thought I would never be able to get out of it. I can't wait to try this in class tonight!

@ChristofferCollin Strong guys should do the same as weak guys. Find the weakness and strengthen it. That means if you are bigger and stronger but lack technique, then you should learn the technique. If the skill is equal, then strength will usually be the determining factor regarding who wins.

That looks like it opens up a lot for the opponent. Arm triangle is right there, mount, on the other side can get the back and rnc. How do you use this and guard against the inevitable? No one just lets me rock them around. Don't know about you.

This didnt work too well for me. I got smashed very hard by a blue belt who was a big and strong guy. He was driving his shoulder into my throat and using his chest to pin both my arms unto my own chest. He tapped me 3x just by crushing my ability to breathe. There was one where he knee on belly me and the minute i tried to shrimp out, he yanked my neck and drove his knee into my sternum forcing me to tap immediately.
@maxwellmee7052
@maxwellmee7052 6 лет назад
He’s holding himself back. Using strength all the while won’t teach him any technique. Try training with people a little smaller until your escape is better. I’m 6’3” and around 225, I have no shame in asking better sparring partners to teach me escapes to stuff they constantly catch me with. If he’s just a bit of a dick then you might just have to avoid him.

@rhidiandavies1991
@rhidiandavies1991 5 лет назад
Sounds like that guy has a bad attitude, I realise your comment is 3 years old at this point but I would have suggested training with someone who has more flow and come back to aggressive types when you're more comfortable escaping from those positions. That being said, in Judo, I find people have insane top-pressure and if they get you in a good pin like kami shiho gatame (north south) you're pretty much stuck unless they're significantly lighter than you, so I've always been told that "the best escape from a pin is to avoid being pinned in the first place". I'm curious though, how are you finding your escapes these days, and are you still training?
@scarred10
@scarred10 12 лет назад
would leaving your arms out like that not get your near arm killed if the switched base towards your head.I find that happens when you dont keep that elbow tight to your body.
@Galleon1235
@Galleon1235 11 лет назад
One way to avoid the cross face all together would be to keep you head down until you are ready to move. This makes it hard for them to place their hand under your neck.
@sinister0077

This particular move is for a BJJ person stuck in sidemount. It wouldnt be used in the street because NO STREETFIGHTER WOULD EVER GET A BJJ BLACKBELT IN SIDEMOUNT. BJJ is effective for street fighting. I know that from personal experience.

I've always told my daughters and my wife to fight dirty. If they were ever in a place where a man is on top of them with ill intentions they should gouge eyes, knee to the groin, bite, claw...whatever works. I've also told them to take note of their surrounding and use whatever they can as a weapon.
@RickMerchantttt
@RickMerchantttt 12 лет назад
@AnthonyMazzarella I see zero risk of an arm triangle in that situation. Unless you just allow your opponent to cartwheel over you, pass your arm across your face, and sink it in. So, I guess...don't sit there like a goober? Once you have that space art 2:00, bring your knee across. "Crisis" averted.

At 2:25 after Emily frames and shrimps from under Stephan, she turns towards him and inserts her knee. That turn towards Stephan is fast and powerful. For some reason I am always struggling with that part. I am turning too slowly and opponents usually have enough time to adjust. It always seems like I have no leverage to make a fast powerful turn. What am I doing wrong?

It somehow didn't occur to him to flick his right leg over both of hers into full mount !? Further, if your opponent is rocking from side to side when you are on top, expect an escape attempt or something ?
@MaxLohMusic
@MaxLohMusic 11 лет назад
But I think scarred10 references a position in which the arm is in an EVEN WORSE situation than this one. Having the near arm "killed" is a bit different from this video; it means the opponent's HIP is in your armpit which effectively immobilizes the arm from further activity until he removes his hip, analogous to pinning a piece in chess
