Think tanks have always played a big role in Massachusetts politics. Think of the Mass. Budget and Policy Center, which pushes for fiscal progressivism, or the Pioneer Institute, which acts as a more conservative watchdog.
Late last year, a new think tank arrived on the scene: the Boston Policy Institute, launched by a pair of longtime Democratic operatives. And this year, the BPI made a huge splash with a report that said declining commercial real estate values will pose a big financial problem for the city.
That finding sparked an ongoing debate featuring Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and a bunch of other, more established parties, including the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. It's also raised questions about who's funding the Boston Policy Institute and what the organization's ultimate goals are. Adam Reilly is joined by Gin Dumcius of Commonwealth Beacon, who recently dug into those questions in a story titled “The Shadowy Think Tank Fighting Boston City Hall.”

The Boston Policy Institute previously released a report warning that declining commercial tax valuations would lead to greatly diminished tax revenues for the city in the coming years, a finding that prompted Wu to propose temporarily raising commercial tax rates to avoid an increased tax burden on homeowners. www.wgbh.org/news/politics/2024-05-06/poll-finds-bostonians-bullish-on-quality-of-life-but-concerned-about-high-costs
