Peace has been restored in the Traken Union and all seems well. But then Tremas notices a longcase clock which definitely doesn't belong on his planet. Upon inspecting it, he finds himself paralysed while a horribly disfigured man comes out from inside the clock. Surprising clip from The Keeper of Traken, first shown in 1981.

Notice the Clock where The Master has for TARDIS. It tells you how many episodes that Tom Baker had left. True story the writer told this on the Audio commentary,

God, when will the Master return to Doctor Who? Weeping Angels made a return, Cybermen did, same with Daleks. But not the Master?
@Ashleypalmer1991
@Ashleypalmer1991 11 лет назад
Yeah, in the old series there was limit to the amount of regenerations a time lord could have. 12 I think it was? Though I am not sure about that. When we meet the master for the 1st time he is already on his 12th regeneration, so when he gets severely burnt he can't regenerate, however he does use whatever regeneration power he has left to sustain his body so he won't die. How he is able to steal a body though is something I am unsure about? I know he does it here and in the 1996 movie.

Regeneration. In this case facilitated by the lingering powers from the Source Manipulator the Master was still imbued with, perhaps also employing some element of his TARDIS as well.

Much as I like Ainley as the Master, Geoffrey Beevers just oozes malevolence in the role. This is going to be a controversial statement, I know, but he, Roger Delgado and Derek Jacobi ought to be considered the Master (un)holy trinity!

The character Master killed Roger Delgado acting career, from what I was told it was when he was at Supermarket and a kid recognised him from Dr Who as the Master , The kid was absolutely terrified of him, Roger was shocked by the reaction that he refused to play the character The Master again or act again.
@IOmoon6221
@IOmoon6221 6 лет назад
I'm sorry but that story is false. Roger Delgado loved playing the Master, it was his most popular role. Roger Delgado died on June 18 1973 in a car accident in Turkey while filming La Cloche tibétaine, a french/german mini-series. He was supposed to appear in "The Final Game", a Doctor Who episode which would've seen the Master sacrificing himself to save the Doctor. That story was never produced due to his unfortunate passing. He didn't quit acting, he died while acting.
@savedbyjesusblood
@savedbyjesusblood 5 лет назад
Delgado's passing also seems to have contributed to Jon Pertwee leaving the role. Katy Manning, Barry Letts were already departing the series so Jon really felt there was no longer a reason to hang around.

Before the Doctor got unlimited regenerations back it would have been a dark choice if the Doctor was dying, absolutely needed for everyone's survival and someone old offered their life/body for the Doctor to use the miniscule amount of regeneration energy left to merge and reset the new body. If taken, that Doctor indicates they have the other person's memories as well.

This scene was ridiculously mishandled. To make it the story's last scene, happening sneakily after the story looked resolved, and leave Nyssa. not even realising it. That was crap even granting the other screw-up that it was made before the afterthought of making Nyssa a companion. * First: the character to get named Trema's + suffer this should have been a bad character who had been behaving as an oppressor. * The takeover scene should have been in the middle of the climactic events around the fireplace. * The action of needing to stop and do it should have been material to the Master's failure. * Resulting from it, Nyssa should have become a companion in the his episode, not in an awkwardly disconnected + unseen fetched way during the next story!

He was wonderful. Unfortunately he drove the crew to distraction, by not sticking to the script arguing with people over stuff, trying to direct the damn thing. +Daniel Appleton Time Lords generally can't. it's just that the Master will go to any lengths to stay alive. He uses other alien (none Time Lord) techniques to take over other people's bodies, like here he uses residual reality warping powers powers he had left over from when he was, for a brief period, the Keeper of Traken. He'd already reached his 12th regeneration limit you see and needed a way to continue on before his final body gave out.
@danielappleton5067

+TimeLordParadox Time Lords have very strong will - power. Especially the Master ! It would be interesting to speculate what would've happened if he had happened upon General Zod or Marvel's Dr. Doom. Or if " Missy " had had the ability to take over the Borg Queen, etc. The stuff that fanfiction is made of !
@TimeLordParadox
@TimeLordParadox 8 лет назад
Daniel Appleton Aye, the Master does have an astounding willpower. You'd need to for someone to cope with living inside an aching rotting body which gives you constant pain every second of life for years on end. Part of that willpower is the ability to cling on to life until he find something to extend it which is I suspect why he manages to survive the impossible. It would be interesting to see him go up against other fictional characters. We always think of the Doctor going up against other characters, but what of the Master, he's the Hyde to the Doctors Jekyll and just as resourceful. Part of me thinks there is a good opportunity the Master would dominate all of them (Depending on the incarnation), but he has at times bitten off more than he can chew. He actually went up against Sherlock Homles' Moriarty (original book version) in the Land of Fiction and killed him quite easily. (It was a short comic released ages ago. But is part of the 8th Doctor anthology collection.) Just to go back to my previous comment and add a bit though. If the Master could use a Time Lord technique to take over another body he'd have done it years ago and not waited as long as he did until Tremas came along.

My favorite master has got to be Geoffrey Beevers. He's pretty good in this story, but he's PHENOMENAL in the audios. He is such a great villain, and I love the Shakespearean vibe that his character gives off. Cold, manipulative, cunning, and just pure evil. Not to mention that the decrepit body is really creepy, and definitely adds to the 'evil' vibe (and is incredibly well-made). His voice is so perfect for a calculating genius; it's so... cool! So yeah, I LOVE Beevers as the Master. Delgado and Ainley are close runner-ups, though.

"Petty"? The Ainley Master destroyed a large portion of the Universe in a bid to gain control of it. The Pratt Master was perfectly willing to destroy Gallifrey's entire stellar system to get his hands on immortality. The Delgado Master - on two seperate occasions - tried to harness another beings almost godlike powers. Petty? I don't think so. Now, I like Simm's Master... but Last of the Time Lords and The End of Time aren't all that (the former is just downright silly).

***** Missy was great at one thing, manipulation. She basically wanted to get back at the Doctor, by first giving him that army, which would mean either he would use it or destroy it (with them all having been human at one point), and later he was the one to kill her, both things the Doctor would always regret, albeit Danny and the Brigadier took that off his hands. I think we will see better Missy stories, if they're not written by Moffat.

For the Master to take over Tremas,s body who was not a Time Lord and could not regenerate would the Master by aging in Tremas,s body end up looking exactly as Tremas did before the Master brutually took Tremas over or would the Master revert back to the horribly decayed and disfigured man he was first seen as in the Deadly Assassin there was no onscreen explanation or even novel explanation for how and why the Master ebded up decayed, deformed, emaciated, burnt, mutilated and disfigured . I wonder if the decayed Master was the result of possibly betraying the Daleks when he worked with them to provoke war between Earth and Draconia in Frontier in Space sadly the final and unplanned Roger Delgado Master story had Roger lived longer he was to return only once more as the Master to have a final showdown supposedly with Jon Pertwee,s Dr and it was supposed to apparently have the Master killed off in a blaze of glory and with a ruddy great big bang .I doubt the Mastr had he been seemingly killed off have been permanently laid to rest I think the Master would have been brought back sooner or later.
@tardisglitch547
@tardisglitch547 3 года назад
The decayed state is thanks to being burnt by a future incarnation because they then remembered that they had to burn beevers, this was before beevers was actually burnt, but he gets burnt by macqueens master and he becomes Peter pratt who absorbed some of the eye of harmony and became the decayed beevers body and then he steals some bodies and then after Eric Roberts he turns back to beevers like whenever a body has died and then he was even more ill and then he was killed and resurrected into the Alex macqueen incarnation

I wonder if stealing bodies is a secret galifrey trick like blood bending from avatar perhaps a legendary timelord from fairy tales had to do what the master had done and steal a body until a new cycle of regenerations could be given to him and the master read books on subjects of this power And wondered if it was real I see no worm morphant
@tardisglitch547
@tardisglitch547 3 года назад
No it's not secret, it's just forbidden as the more you do it, the less time some bodies would last, like how the human body of Eric Robert's decayed immediately, because he's human and because beevers has snatched so many bodies
@PCCphoenix

Even if Nyssa did come to save Tremas from The Master,she probably would've been killed for interfering in his plan to merge with her father's body so that he can enter his 13th regeneration before it became too late using the some of the Keeper's powers to do it.

I've got to say, I much prefer Geoffrey Beever's Master over Peter Pratt's version from Deadly Assassin. No offence to Peter, but I couldn't really buy into the performance with him having the Halloween mask on (as opposed to the 15-odd layers of make up on Geoffrey's face lol), not to mention it lacks a certain creepy charm that Geoffrey's performance gives in this story.

Oh, yeah, Deadly Assassin was really good, easily in my top 5 Tom Baker stories, but what I mean is that I couldn't get into the performance because of the mask. Yes, I know it's really petty, but it just makes him look like the standard monster of the week to me and it muffles him a bit. I should clarify that I didn't mean he was bad, just not one of my favourites, especially when compared to Beevers

Traken was one of the most unusual stories in Doctor Who. certainly not typical one of my favorites! l and certainly better than all of the NU who combined! I never understood it as a kid, but this is not supposed to be a show for 12 year olds! At the time of the telling, it as an adult sci-fi drama with elements of surprise put in. This and State of Decay should be put on Masterpiece theater, IMO.
