Please join CSIS President and CEO, Dr. John J. Hamre, on Tuesday, July 16 at 4:00pm EDT for a conversation with Sir Robin Niblett about his newest book, The New Cold War: How the Contest Between the US and China Will Shape Our Century, followed by a reception.
In this short, urgent book, Niblett argues that only by looking back can we heed the warnings and learn the necessary lessons to guide us through this new reality: he goes through the ten ways in which the new cold war is different, and offers five new rules for navigating it. How we manage this contest will determine not only whether there is still space for international cooperation to deal with our many global challenges, from the climate emergency to the technological revolution, but also who gets to dominate the twenty-first century and, quite simply, the course of all our futures.
Sir Robin Niblett is a distinguished fellow at Chatham House, after spending 15 years as its director and chief executive until 2022, and senior adviser at Hakluyt, the British strategic advisory firm. He is also engaged by the Asia Society Policy Institute and the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC, where he was Executive Vice President for ten years.
This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.

Your intro music is not good enough to justify letting it play for 9 minutes

I seem to notice that many Western experts are having some reservations about the China's political system. I heard Robin Niblett saying that China is pursuing global engagement for its survival of its political system. I stop short of agreeing or disagreeing with his views. His view of a new Cold War between U.S. and China is too western centric. I think he needs to take an independent as well as in-depth study of Chinese civilization, culture, politics, economy, systems of governance. One example is that he needs to learn from Martin Jacques.

Realistically, you must accept him to be nothing but western centric. It’s natural. Self interest matters most here.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed IT HAS BEEN SAID that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’ This was the exact statement made by Churchill in 1946, at a time when the US- and Soviet-led allies achieved the herculean success in, against all odds, defeating fascist Germany & Imperial Japan. Had Churchill been alive today in 2024 with what we know today, he'd have said "Democracy is the best form of government except for responsive authoritarian government such as those practised in China."

China has shown its approach with the Belt and Road Initiative, investing throughout Asia. The BRICS is also aimed at mutual respect of nations without a hegemon

Robin: "I think we each fear each other's system." This is a valid statement but there is a critical difference - while China is prepared to accept and co-exist with the West "as-is", the US-led West is not prepared to accept and co-exist with China "as-is". It's true that the Chinese consider, rightly or wrongly depending on where you are, that their current system is superior to the West's in the sense that that system provides certainty to implement difficult reform to help a POOR DEVELOPING country to industrialize and modernise. But they do not expect nor impose on the West (or indeed anywhere else in the world) to adopt the Chinese system. On the contrary, the US-led West have for decades, cajoled, lectured, castigated, and even compelled, China to adopt the West's system. This is a legacy of the Judaeo-Christian religion which similarly proselytizes to convert everyone to that religion. Just look at all the countries colonized by the West in the past.

Rubbish; abandoned after 10 minutes. The main speaker is not knowledgeable or qualified enough to speak as a China expert.

28:50 definitely not Chinese definition for the role cuz it would not allow anyone to prosper once in position of power, rather it will rule with fear.
