A New Cold War? Ukraine Violence Escalates, Leaked Tape Suggests U.S. Was Plotting Coup

Last night the country's embattled president and the opposition leaders demanding his resignation called for a truce and negotiations to try to resolve Ukraine's political crisis. But hours later, armed protesters attempted to retake Independence Square sparking another day of deadly violence. At least 50 people have died since Tuesday in the bloodiest period of Ukraine's 22-year post-Soviet history. While President Obama has vowed to "continue to engage all sides" a recently leaked audio recording between two top U.S. officials reveal the Obama administration has been secretly plotting with the opposition. We speak to Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at New York University and Princeton University. His most recent book, "Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the New Cold War," is out in paperback. His latest Nation article is "Distorting Russia: How the American Media Misrepresent Putin, Sochi and Ukraine."

@@grocerylist Sadly, the mindset of average people (due to the media) is that Russia is the one in the wrong, from the start till the end. Yet back in 2014, when there are peaceful resolutions being put out by Putin, to make Ukraine a neutral state without anyone interfering, and both the EU and Russia sides will help it economically, the white house, USA itself, decline that offer. And it is after that rejection, riots take place (leaked footage shows that US instigated it) and Russia had to annex crimea by invading. This led to NATO to start militarizing some of the new states that have joined NATO recently, and eventually led to a new Ukraine President that is pro western and want to join NATO. Once the world knows that Ukraine has the backing of NATO and US, it made Putin reconsider on why US wants to do it? Why make promises on "no NATO expansion" and "Neturalizing Ukraine, but helping them economically" when the US just want it all? This actually shows USA does not want a peaceful resolution, and just want to antagonize Russia, without caring about which states in Europe get caught in the crossfire and just blame it on Russia when war happens. Since the world knows that Russia is the bad guy, whatever the media portrays on Russia will be deemed as correct in the public's eye of view. And this, makes me sad to know that the truth is being twisted so much. (I'm not a pro-russian, in fact russia should be the one at blame for the war crisis. But US themselves that controlled NATO are the root issues that caused the war today)

Both of them do what they need to do in order to expand their power and level of influence but we live in the west so NATO's and America's war crimes are swept under the rug and everything Russia does is magnified by 1000. All of that said and even while recognizing both are corrupt, i recognize that the ideas that America stands for is cancerous, liberalism, this love for democracy and "freedom", the idea that humans are interchangeable and races, ethnicity and religion are not relevant and dangerous is poisonous to every country around the world. America as a regime is the ultimate evil because of this. That's why everyone who's against America is in the right side of history.

The fact it's that the game being played right now it's us (western countries - I'm from Portugal) against Russia and some allies. But if you're a person just arrived to this issue you can be played, but if we look forward and we watch these opinions, what was REALLY happening in the field in the past 8 9 years, then we SHOULD be having another kind of conversation. That it's the ultimate fail of the western, the promises they made, and also what is waiting for us, from them (western). So, there's no absolute true in this, there's no right side. The truth it was the first victim of all of this shit

The United States currently supports over 73 percent of the world’s dictatorships! Lol nd we continue to go down this path for imperial dominance. @@jessedekoster2485 I have talked to a few Russians using google translator and their views are either the same as the people trying to expose the truth about Ukraine (that the west started a coup and civil war and its their fault) or a smaller handful of Russians have been so fed up with the bullshit for decades that they genuinely hate the west and everything it stands for because they're not trustworthy and constantly blame Russia for everything. Regardless though almost everyone wants to get the truth out, but because language barrier + the western governments have full media control its not really possible.

Looking at this video seven years after it was made, it is perfectly clear that Putin was not to blame for the situation that developed just prior to the request from the leaders of Luhansk and Donetsk, two weeks ago, that he provide them with security and peacekeeping forces. Prof. Stephen Cohen had a inkling that both the USA and NATO would wash their hands and watch from afar if Ukraine disintegration into civil war - despite the Minsk Accord - and that is exactly what they did, even after the USA staged a regime change coup, even after Russia stopped the civil conflict in the Dombass, and even after Russia invaded the rest of Ukraine to demilitarize it. Except of course that the USA State Dept. participated heavily in the tsunami of anti-Russian and anti-Putin propaganda that erupted when Russian forces entered the Dombass. Blame the other guy, is an old strategy, for brainwashing because it is effective.

Incredible that all this historical context is not feeding into any of these conversations. It is actively hidden to push a very specific narrative regarding Russia. They lied about Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Vietnam, and more. There is absolutely no possibility that the Western media is portraying this accurately to their audiences and it is by design.

Once you remove people own faith in their capability to do good, to that "miracles" actually can happen cause of human acts instead of divine intervention. They are easy told that a mightier force than themselves told someone higher up that they have controll. Yes, Empireism has never died out. Democracy died before it began. It failed with the beginning of man! And our world will allways be unbalanced. But there is time for a new revulotion in the world. I don't know how it will go. But the phases are hard for most. Cohen's analogy with American protesters throwing molotovs or smashing government buildings while American police try to halt the protests makes a lot of sense. No country in the world, no matter how sympathetic they are with protesters, would allow a protest that destroys buildings or physically threatens leaders allow the protesters to go so far without the police intervening or halting the situation just saying.

@@fredgarvinMP here in the Nordic, were are pretty well. Wind and sun power is pretty much covering my countries needs. It's more a bigger problem in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. Housing are heated by gas( inflation and gas prices are hurting down there. People have to choose between heating and food, why you have demonstrations). The new prica cap on gas is below market price, so what's the point. I believe the EU will be buying LNG gas from the US ( new lng gas site was just finished 7n Germany) add possible trades from African pipes around Morocco should be 2 pipelines. The EU is furious at hungary, poland ( securing deals for future trades of the cheap gas ( both EU members, so sanctions are put on them in form of withholding billions in relieve aid from the lockdown. Then you have Serbia, they lean towards dealing with Russia to secure their citizens. Today I heard that tensions are rising between Serbia and Kosovo. NATO is present there, so we will see what the " defense alliance " are going to do. Funny how sanctions got lifted in Venezuela and fast!
