00:00 a bit of a backstory on how I got here (life abroad, Regional Eats, starting this channel)
05:40 why covering Italian food feels limiting now
09:57 I'm open to learn more from other cultures
13:22 people over things
16:17 we'll talk more about the social meaning of food
20:14 what to expect going forward (Misplated, more "chatty" videos, ...)
Why Misplated?
“Misplated” comes from “misplaced”, the feeling of being “lost”, “in the wrong place”. For many of us in London or a big city, this is very common. But something magical happens with food. No matter where we are, it has the power to make us feel at home. The more one travels, the more ingredients one adds to their plate, eventually creating a unique palette of flavours that travels with them. What many might call “misplated” ingredients, are now the perfect recipe that makes us feel at home.
About me
I'm Claudia, a journalist and producer reporting on food. I was born and raised in Bari, Italy, and I have been living in London, UK since 2012. I have built a career around the food industry, reporting on international food for Business Insider on popular series Regional Eats and So Expensive, and now on my personal RU-vid channel. Living in London and reporting on international food has forever changed the way I eat, but most importantly, the way I relate to food. There is the sensory element to it, but there also is a personal connection that is unique to each of us. I enjoy learning why certain foods are so important to countries and cultures around the world, and how food artisans and chefs cherish their land through food. Follow me for more food videos!

Your success in my opinion, is your curiosity and ability to share what you learn with others. You continually ask the questions of your on camera guests the questions that I am wondering about. I will happily follow you on your journey to anywhere you wish to take us. I am just happy to be allowed to share in the journey. On a personal note... more Italia. Would love to see more family meals, food trucks, and street foods from the different areas you visit. The most important thing is that you be true to yourself and follow your own path in life -- we are all thankful for being able to join in.

There’s a magic you convey when you connect with the makers/farmers/chefs when you’re discovering and describing things to us. You’re clearly intelligent but there’s an innocence and genuine curiosity when you engage your subjects or experiences that let’s me live it with you vicariously. As long as you’re having fun and enjoying whatever it is you’re doing I’m down to watch.

Just an immediate reply, but this is brilliant. You have touched so many topics that are important. The place of food. A sense of community that comes from being a stranger in a strange land - along with other strangers. I ended up replaying the part where you say you are not an expert several times and began to laugh. It is true that you are not an expert. But you are very good at these stories.

I would love if you interview common people, not just chefs. For example, that one specual dish that was taught by a grandma or mother to her daughter, and talk to both together. Or that special dish that is only prepared for a wedding in x country by a whole group of people or for special coming of age birthday in x.country/community. Or that one dish your parents make you when you are sick. Or the dish for special holidays and what it means/how it originated (ancestor day for japanese, day of the dead in mexico, ramadan, chinese new year, samhain in Uk/ireland, etc.)

For what it's worth, I already thought that what sets your videos apart (both food insider and your channel) is meeting the farmers and the families that produce the food. First, I have greatly enjoyed your presentation of food both in your day job and on your own channel. I appreciate the insights into regional or local Italian foods (and people) because I've spent most of my life in the US, where Italian food is refracted through an Italian American lens. Not about the better or the worse. But it was an eye opener when I was 15 and went to Italy with my mom and my sister and experienced something familiar, but so different. The emphasis, the accent, lens was different, and it was wonderful. It changed 15 year old me forever. To your change towards people over things, I look forward to it. My mother is Filipina. My father is Indian. But my best friend since I was 12 was from Greece. I didn't visit his village in Greece until I was 25, and it again changed my life. It changed my perception of the role of food. The role of ingredients. The economics of food in every day life in different places. The meaning of food to the social fabric of a village of 400 versus the supermarket big city world I live in. It's not about who makes the best this or that. It's about identity, hospitality, cultural connections, pride and so much more. I have faith that your change of direction will yield wonderful results, though it might not be a straight path. Thanks for making the videos that you make and for sharing them.

This presentation is perfect and I cannot wait to see the results. One thing I must say is that you shouldn’t wait too long before visiting New York! But I can’t wait to see the first postings from London!

Nice pivot Claudia. I'm excited to see where you go with this. The people and the meaning and stories behind the foods we love, and even the ones we aren't familiar with, are so much more important than the mechanics of how something is made. The 'how it's made' aspect is just a very useful hook to introduce us to the makers. I loved your hazelnut farmer, guanciale and gelato videos because we met the makers through them. You have a knack of doing that that's rare and valuable. They kind of reminded me of Padma Lakshmi's series Taste the Nation, that kind of thing. Alongside the traditional makers it'd also be interesting to hear how immigrant communities in Italy and Europe preserve their food stories and how and if they're influencing their new communities also through sharing their food and stories. In bocca al lupo.

As someone who has enjoyed your previous videos about the labor behind specialty food (such as Italian Cheeses), it's so nice to see that you care about exploring other foods and the cultures behind them. I don't know if it's similar in Italian food culture, but in the food culture that I come from, there's a tendency among people to be insular with their food. This is especially true of the older generation in that culture; they have less openness to trying new outside foods. I just wanted to say that you sound a lot like me in that you have a passion for exploring food cultures outside of the one that you grew up in. That's amazing to hear. If I understand you correctly in this video, it sounds like your aspiration is similar to someone like Anthony Bourdain. I don't know if you've heard of him, but his food program and philosophy on food sounds quite similar to what you're seeking. You felt as if your old videos on food, while informative, were too lifeless and sterile, and focused too little on the people who made/consumed the food. In that sense, you share a vision of food with Anthony Boudain where you wish to examine food as an expression of the culture that created that food. And, perhaps more broadly, you want to show people that food is a reflection of humanity itself. That sounds beautiful and ambitious. To give you some inspiration for that, Anthony Bourdain's episode where he was in Lebanon is a great example. Much like the rest of his show, he cares a great deal about food, but he uses food as the backdrop--the door--for the larger culture of Lebanon. It's about more than just food; it's about the hospitality of locals, the unique challenges they face in their country, and also the universal fears and hopes that all humans look towards. Even when it talks about food, it goes beyond the dish itself, and shows viewers how food is enjoyed by people and what it means to them in their lives. At its heart, it's a show about people and places I'll also leave you with this other creator you may not have heard of. His name is Saeng Douangdara, and he's on social media. He's passionate about sharing his Lao food culture, but beyond sharing recipes, he relates the food to his culture and his life growing up Laotian. Sorry for the long ramble. I hope I was able to help you even a little bit. Buona fortuna
@claudia-romeo
@claudia-romeo 25 дней назад
Thank you for this comment! I haven’t watched that Lebanon episode, but I really love the way you describe it. There’s so much more than the dish! I agree that staying in one’s home country can get very insular, that’s very very true of Italians too, and I found myself falling for this trap as I got closer and closer to reporting only in Italy. That’s why I’m excited to expand my view, mostly to avoid getting stuck in the insularity again. Thank you for your support 🧡

Looking forward to your new videos. In terms of food an anthropology you can find the same dish across different countries that seems to serve different purposes. For example, Italian marriage soup exists also in Greece and Romania.

As a Londoner who lived in Switzerland for over a decade I think I understand your perspective. Going back home feels a bit too comfortable sometimes. Being out of my comfort zone is where I learn to adapt and appreciate things more

Hi Claudia, first of all thanks for being so transparant in your professional journey as a food journalist. I often think what you are doing would be my dreamjob. But whether or not that's true, the fact that we get to see your honest insights and struggles behind the scenes, makes it only more admirable and human. :) I can relate to the international hunger and doubtful feelings wherever you stay for a longer period of time. I think to a certain extent certain people will always feel slightly restless about where they live, because they know other influences and experiences so you start comparing. But rather than always feeling slightly out of place or comparing too much, it's a true benefit and privilege to know about other cultures, so you should just keep surrounding yourself with these international influences! I think you have enough interested viewers to keep following you on this journey with partly different content. The new focus on the social aspect of food is very diverse and sounds very thrilling. So just stay close to your gut feeling and go for it and we will be there alongside of you watching this new content! :) Good luck!

I think I've said this before, but it bears repeating. Your reporting on cheese is the best that there is, as far as I can tell. I can watch one of your cheese productions and understand what the cheese maker is trying to do. As a hobbyist cheese maker, this is the best consistent resource on specific, traditional European cheese styles that I know about. Nothing else even comes close. The average person is not going to understand the subtleties of what makes each cheese different. A group of us always pours over every frame of video you produce in your cheese videos, discovering secrets that we would have no way of learning without actually travellling to each of these places ourselves. Somehow you have learned to capture the exact thing we need to see, and the exact hint that we require from the cheese maker to be able to get to the heart of each cheese. These videos are a treasure for me and I appreciate it far more than I can explain. Looking forward to watching your future endeavors. Good luck!

I was a little scared to watch this but happy I did! I was curious why you were doing your own food reporting instead of Regional Eats and I'm glad you're still with the company even if the project wound down. For what it's worth I just consider you a really insightful food journalist and producer not just the "italian food lady." -- I assumed you were just sticking with what you could do with your personal budget for the start of things. I understand what you mean about being food (product) focused in some of those old videos. I remember one you did with 2 siblings who started/restarted the family gelato business with the "King's Recipe" and I thought that was great because you got to talk to them about how they came to their business AND I learned about gelato as well. Your new project sounds great and do feel free to chat with us about any updates on your project!

Fantastic decision Claudia. Very brave and very smart. You make some good points on the difference between followers and community. As I approach retirement and relocation from the US to Umbria, I too see a fundamental change developing in my life. Perhaps an interesting direction could be the effect of food on health in regard to quality of ingredients. The differences with food in the US vs the EU. Or Italia more specifically. Integrating some age related projections that might not be relevant to yourself, but inevitable non the less. Literally, food for thought. A discussion on attitude relating food to health. I now try to start a little channel describing the move to the next phase of my life, later to describe everyday life and adventures. Of course including food and aging. Like you, I think I want to focus on community. Then the followers will come.

Follow your passion, this is what carries through in your videos. If you do what you care about then you will be successful. Don't let anyone tell you that your opinion doesn't matter because you're not an expert, if it means something to you, you can be guaranteed that it means the same to others :)

Claudia, I'm very excited you want to branch out like that. I think you diagnosed your own position very astutely. At the moment you have an audience, while many RU-vidrs who focus more on the social side of food (like Adam Ragusea or Beryl Shereshewsky), or even those that focus on recipes (like Sorted Food or Kenji Lopez-Alt) have a community. I think that comes with the territory of starting out as a content producer for a corporate entity. But I have no doubt you can branch out here on your personal channel. After all, you managed to stand out as your own personality even when you did that corporate content. As someone who has lived abroad for a considerable amount of time now, and as someone who has one academic foot in food history, both your comments about feeling most at home in an international community and about food being about people resonated very much with me, so I'm looking forward to seeing where you will go from here. And since you asked for recommendations: for inspiration and recreation (but not necessarily for concrete topic suggestions) I can very much recommend Dan Jurafsky's The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu

You absolutely nailed it. I feel this is exactly my journey. It felt natural and easy to jump on a similar style as the 'corporate' content. I think I needed this time to find my style and voice. And thank you for the book recommendation!
