The market plays a large role too. There's a million unique indie games over on itch but almost none of 'em will ever get the eyes or funding necessary to make something big. Gotta balance what the people want with your own creative vision.

@@EphiTV I think that is certainly true, but I think that what the market wants is misinterpreted. In general I think the indie market wants new and novel ideas made by people passionate about those ideas. but making games is hard work and takes ages and devs want a return on their investment so they instead make games that the market has rewarded before without considering that the reason it rewarded it was because it was novel and made by someone with passion. As a consumer I would take a 5 minute game where you navigate a conversation where you are being yelled at at work with a dialogue tree that gets progressively harder as you try to avoid getting fired or something over Undertale 19 or Cruelty Squad 8 even if it might be a bad concept.

I swear, if I see ONE MORE game that is just ultrakill again, I'm going to flip
