Catch the hobo cat. He/she needs shots to make sure they won't bring something bad to Pablo or anyone else. Get he/she fixed, then release. If they stay, they can earn their keep. If they leave, then at least they won't reproduce and add to the feral population. Over time they will adapt to you, farm life and their job.

This is exactly how ancient cats became domesticated. Fun fact: cats are the only domesticated animal that humans didn’t catch and domesticate. The cats just showed up at farming settlements in the Fertile Crescent region and humans appreciated them hunting prey that messed with the grain supply.
@Duke00x
@Duke00x 3 года назад
We are not exactly sure how we domesticated dogs (they are the first animal we domesticated so it goes WAY back into prehistory). But some of the possible ways are the same. It could have been that some of the more brave wolfs ate our casted away trash leftovers. The more aggressive ones were killed and the less aggressive ones were allowed closer and closer to the tribe and at some point it when from scavenging our leftovers out of our trash piles and to being thrown leftovers by us and from there we got use to each other and at some point started working together. So in short dogs may have also been domesticated without being caught first.
@rachizzle615
@rachizzle615 3 года назад
@@Duke00x I study evolution and have an advanced degree in it. I can try and explain what the best working theories are about dogs. Part of you already stated. What we think happened is when human tribes were nomadic, wolves followed them and ate the food scraps. Humans grew to respect them and even worship them. The two big working theories about how wolves became dogs involve humans capturing them. One is wolf mothers stopped caring for wolf pups that had mutations that made them smaller and humans took these pups and raised them. The other is that humans actually captured the weak and smaller wolves that had mutations as they were easier to catch. The main difference between cats and dogs is that dogs and wolves are very different. While cats pretty much the same creatures that roamed wild in the Fertile Crescent about 10,000 years ago. This is evidenced by the small wild cats that still roam in Turkey that aren’t exactly genetically the same as common house cats, but look exactly the same . Through the years cats were bred only for looks while dogs were bred for task work. This was something man became good at because of how dog genetics work. It’s all very fascinating and I could go on for a long long time.

Hobo Puss is already earning his keep - stalking that mouse is a promising sign. I agree with the neutering ideas, which you must have gotten a thousand comments on - just to avoid unwanted kitties - and neutered pusses are less likely to roam so less likely to get hit by a car - but I don't know about all the advice on introductions and training - I always thought cat colonies sorted that out for themselves? But, come what may, I hope everything between Hobo Puss and Pablo Barn Cat goes as smoothly as possible!

Cats, yes. Dogs, no. DON'T LET DOGS FREE ROAM. Period! They are the #1 killer of ducks and chickens. Cats are bad enough, I do not believe in them being allowed outside, but with dogs it is inexcusable to let them run around free. I get that they can get out, but if I had a dollar for every dog owner who refused to accept any responsibility for the carnage their dog caused while it was out, I could buy my own dang farm.

@@acgray1972 these are feral dogs in a very rural area, very close to a summer camp full of kids. They stay out of areas that “animal control” or anyone in the county would be able to reach (regardless, theyd still be euthanized if caught because they’re feral). In certain states if it’s your property and there’s a “nuisance animal”/threat to people you’re within your right as an owner to deal with that threat. Does it suck? Yeah, I hate to think that dogs are being killed. But shitty people dump unfixed dogs which breed and create packs, and someone has to deal with them. If you’re going to be upset at anyone, be upset at the people dumping these dogs instead of surrendering them or finding them another home. They are the ones condemning the dog to their fate. Final thought, it’s not unlike dealing with nuisance coyotes. The bold and brazen ones are generally dealt with. The ones that stay off the property are cool as long as they stay off the property

Definitely keep the second barn cat. He’ll be fine living there and help you keep the mice away . I never had a farm, but lived on 4 acres of wooded land and took in the random cats that would pick my house to call home. Many lived outside and found shelter under my pouch and sheds during bad weather as they were afraid of people and wouldn’t get close enough to let me take them in. I only provided food and got them their rabies vaccines and had any females “altered”. Most stayed around for long periods of time, but they would come and go as they wanted. Meanwhile, I never had rodents around my house. We mutually supported each other’s needs. This system worked well for us.
@AlmightyDoubleHelix
@AlmightyDoubleHelix 3 года назад
First thing's first with the second barn cat: If you plan on keeping it, you take it to the vet to make sure it doesn't have anything it could spread to Pablo. You probably already knew that, though. The hard part is going to be getting it socialized to Pablo, Toby, and yourself.
@auntkwan9115
@auntkwan9115 3 года назад
I'd say you definitely need more barn cats. Even if you had no accessible food anywhere on the farm, you'd still have a mouse population problem because of the barn. The barn provides excellent shelter from the elements and there's nowhere near the amount of predators they face in the woods. Even a cat that doesn't hunt at all would still be an improvement (and there are a lot of cats who just don't hunt), since just having an extra cat hanging around the barn is a good deterrent. My family's small farm had our fair share of strays and rescues, here's a few things to consider: Kittens & younger cats always integrated well with the rest of the farm, older cats & strays only sometimes. The flipside of this is diehard stray cats (as opposed to abandoned pets) are great hunters (sometimes TOO good in regards to small livestock like rabbits or fowl). Stray and adult cats might run away after their visit to the vet's, whereas kittens/young cats are far more forgiving. No matter whether you keep Hobo Cat or find other cats, please do spay/neuter and give them their shots (rabies, feline distemper, etc). Even if they don't stick around you'll be doing a very good thing for both the individual animal's health and the pet population.

I once saw some parent Robins panicking about and screaming at a young Cooper's hawk (probably trying to graduate into adulthood) stumbling through the tree where the Robins obviously had a nest. I don't know if the young hawk came across the nest and, relieved, had a meal, but I do know that parents of all kinds (even hawks) will do whatever they can to protect their babies. We humans here do like our hawks as they find it easy to dine on pigeons and doves, so I think that most smaller birds can escape being hunted by diving into tight-knit brush/shrubs that most hawks will avoid. Smaller birds (and mice, lizards and snakes) do have to worry about Roadrunners and probably Kestrels. What we can see in the city is always interesting!

Even if they are feral, as long as they're neutered and get regular vaccinations, it should be mostly okay. Most barn cats I've encountered have been at least a little feral to some extent. A lot of farmers don't bother getting them vaccinated or neutered either where I live. They just leave them be and rarely bother handling them at all to get them used to humans. It's an unfortunate practice on a lot of farms IMO. Hobo Barn Cat probably doesn't know it yet, but they probably choose one of the best possible barns to move to.
