A New Rod, 2 New Species, and 3 New Creeks! (Tenkara Fly Fishing)

In this video I head out on a 3-week-long road trip to fish my way around Utah. I fish with a new rod, catch two new-to-me subspecies of cutthroat trout, and fish a few perfect little tenkara streams.

I'm from Thunder Bay Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 and I grew up fishing kekabeka falls.....2nd highest falls in Ontario...speckled trout fishing at its finest....a bad day fishing...is better than a good day at work 😀

I'm impressed that you are able to net the fish so easily with the short reach net. I often have major challenges with the long line and bent pole netting with short nets. I envy your environment Utah is one of my favorite states.

I hope to do one in the next couple of weeks. This was filmed a couple of months ago, and since then I've caught ~250 fish with it. In short, it's a great rod. It casts well in the longest and middle lengths. Doesn't cast super well in the shortest length, but at that length you're probably going to be bow and arrow casting anyway, and the shortest length is good at that. It's an excellent small stream rod. I wouldn't hesitate to get one if you fish small streams.

Not sure exactly where you were when you caught the first Cutt, but it looked a lot like the Raft River Range (George Creek/ Onemile Creek/ Johnson Creek). That area is native to Yellowstone Cutthroat. That fish looked a lot like a Yellowstone Cutt to me... Thanks for the video!

If you had to pick between the mizuchi or shadow fire 365 what would you lean towards? Rock creek in blue ridge north Georgia is where I’ll start off. It can go from small creeks to slightly larger and deeper areas with logs creating havens for them. It’d be my first tenkara as well

I'm having a hard time deciding between the Mizuchi and the Rhonda from Tenkara USA. I'll be fishing a lot in the Southern Appalachians with heavy cover and some medium size water with pretty big browns, occasionally 20+ inches. This will be my first Tenkara and I'd like a quality rod with versatility. Any thoughts that might help me decide between the two?

I have a little creek in Vermont that’s very mossy and the brookies have black mouths like that. I think it’s stain from smashing bugs in the moss all day.

Great video! I just discovered your channel recently and would like some advice on which tenkara rod to purchase. I have decided to purchase from Tenkara USA because of their warranty and buy either the Iwana or Sato rod and the starter kit. I am new to tenkara and have always fished rod and reel with bait or lures. I will save $80 with the Iwana (12 ft.), but if I buy the Sato I can extend it to various lengths (10’8”, 11’10”, 12’9”). Any advice you have would be great. Also, I will mostly be fishing in the Eastern Sierra in California and various streams and creeks in LA and Ventura Counties in the LA area.

If you'll be fishing small streams and creeks, I'd go with an adjustable rod. Have fun!

Do you like the suzume or the mizuchi more?

I like them both, but if I had to choose one, it'd be the Mizuchi. It's better for handling bigger fish, but it's not as sensitive for smaller fish as the Suzume.

Great rod. If you're consistently catching mostly small fish (like sub-6 inches), it's not ideal, but if you're catching medium and big fish, it's great.
