A new slip and new Tohatsu 6hp Sailmaster for our Macgregor 26D

Sorry it's been so long, but we've got a little sailing update. We rented a slip while I scrounge together the funds to work on my trailer. We also jumped for a new engine, which has been a blessing. In this episode, we sail up the St. Lucie river and back, check how nerve wracking it is to get out of our tiny slip, and go beneath the Jensen Bridge.

A good video of your experience with the Tohatsu 6hp motor and MacGregor sailboat! I sail a '94 MacGregor 26S and used an 8hp Honda that became unreliable. I took my boat out a few months ago to break in my new Tohatsu motor and was having a nice day until I got in a tight space in my marina and tried to turn using both the motor and tiller. The spinning prop wacked into the rudder (luckily it's HDPE) and left a few gouges in it. So I guess for me, turning the boat will strictly be with the rudder and not the motor. MacGregor's transom motor mount leaves something to be desired as there is no room to move the outboard tiller for turning. The Tohatsu motor for sailboats is a great little motor.

Keep the DB down about 3 or 4' when in the marina. Makes a huge diffrence for maneuverability.

Just love your videos I also have a mac It's a 93 26s. I live just south of Gainesville Florida I haven't sailed in over a year And I have to single hand when I do. It's a lot of work Ha HA . I'M 72 and retired. It's past time to get back on the water.Your videos are very inspiring.need to get off my duff haha. Jerry

Hey Jerry! Glad to hear you like the videos. I could imagine single handing would be tough with a Mac that's not already set up. If you're ever in Stuart area let me know and we can go out on mine! I'm always happy to sail. Good luck getting back out and don't worry about the multiple messages. It happens!

Love your videos. I also have a Mac 93 26s. Live in central FL. South of Gainsville. I'm retired. Don't get to sail much though. It just sets on trailer. I have to single hand when I do

How is the maneuvering without a motor standoff? Can you turn easily? I've got same motor, same boat. Scared to enter marinas. Just added a trolling motor to give me extra maneuvering in shallows.

I have a question. I just got a Macgregor 26S and am wanting a new motor for reasons similar to what you mentioned. How bad is the vibration from this motor considering it is a single cylinder? We had an issue with our current motor vibrating the whole boat. Thanks!

Congrats! I hope you can enjoy it. A few things to look at: Transom strength. Mine leaked. Overall damage. Not too hard to fix but if water gets in, it can damage the core. Soft spots in the deck. Rigging is cheap, but look for rust and cracked wires. Mast and boom are most important. Straight, working, etc. Check the bilge. Is it wet? If so, why? Overall, if it's a project, they're fun to work on anyway. Good luck and have a blast!

Great video. Question about the Tohatsu. Do you feel like 6HP is enough, now that youve used it a while? Did you need to ultra long shaft or was that just the version that you found?
@trailersailoradventures6138
@trailersailoradventures6138 3 года назад
Hey, thanks! And yes, a 6hp at quarter throttle pushes us along at around hull speed. The 8hp did exactly the same, so I don't really think a bigger engine would do much for us, unless it was much bigger. As for the length, yes the ultra long shaft is a requirement. Anything else will suck air when you go over waves. We even have that problem sometimes with the ultra long shaft. The engine has been a very valuable upgrade. The only thing I can complain about is that there isn't a push button start.

@@trailersailoradventures6138 are you able to get it out of the water enough when you're sailing?
@trailersailoradventures6138
@trailersailoradventures6138 3 года назад
@@cageun yes it folds all the way up. No issues with it dragging unless you leave it down. That's something I learned the hard way not to do, as I almost lost the motor!

Hi, very nice video. How do you manoeuver with the motor running in the marina for tight turns? Motor tiler only or both Mac tiler and motor rotation ?
@trailersailoradventures6138
@trailersailoradventures6138 3 года назад
Good question! I generally use the motor to turn tightly backwards. Forward, I keep enough speed to turn, then just hit reverse if I get too close to something. My wife is always hanging off the bow, ready to direct us using other boats or pilings, too. It's tough in the marina and I have yet to perfect it. Too fast and it's scary, too slow and you can't turn!!!
