Chinese and Jews have very similar values: family, education, diligence, success. That's why there are so many inter-marriages. And we Chinese do not have the European baggage of antisemitism.
Revelation 2:9 King James Version (KJV) 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
I'm Chinese but living in a western country so I'm familiar with the typical antisemitic craps online or offline. It is true that Jewish stereotypes like "smart, rich, cunning" are known among Chinese. The difference is that Chinese view and say these stereotypes in positive light. When Chinese say "Jews are smarts or owning all the banks", we say it from the perspective of admiration instead of hatred. We admire how talented Jews are and how they are able to accumulate so much wealth.
The Jews and the Chinese work very hard to provide many comforts for the community - in the areas of food, clothing and services. They're excellent with building networks and do not over charge their customers either. Likewise, many Muslims also work along this line - we're all the same human beings, surviving in a tough world and we should always appreciate we're not the only ones.
Revelation 2:9 King James Version (KJV) 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Amazing how perceptions don't change! But the fact that someone teaches Jewish studies in Yunnan and there are Chinese people reading Sholom Aleichem is hopeful! Good work!
I'm going to a Chabad House and know Modi Ani off by heart. But I can't do much more. The Jewish way of life is way too hard for me. We Chinese only need to bow down to our parents and do what we're told. That's easy. The Jewish way is from morning to evening, from evening to morning, day in, day out, week in, week out, month in, month out, year in, year out, life in, life out. It's too much for me, I'm sorry. I can't do it. 513 rules to keep everyday is too many for me to remember, let alone keep. I'm just trying to not covet, and I'm already failing. I'm single, and whenever I see a good looking couple, I get so jealous and wish it's my turn next, and I already broke the coveting law, so that sucks. So I might as well give up now, because if every sin is worthy of death, how many deaths am I worthy of already? Too many to count. Might as well go up to HaShem and file for moral bankruptcy and see if He can help. Because I'm kinda stuck, and no numbers of Yom Kippur can help me now! I'm stuffed! I do one Yom Kippur, and before the event is even over, I've probably already coveted a couple of times, so it was all in vain. What a pain!
People living in countries with non Abrahamic religions are not likely to have any negative opinion about the Jews coz Abrahamic stories which probably influences people's opinions about the Jews in the West aren't that relevant in the East.
When we talked about Jews, we usually thought of their wealth. I once joked with a Jewish friend (who used to own a bank): “You Jewish people open banks just like how Chinese people open restaurants.” Accordingly, in Hitler Germany, Jewish population accounted only 1% of the German population but controlled more than 50% of the wealth in Germany. It is the same nowadays where the proportion of Jew’s wealth globally is much greater than the proportion of Jews among the population (about 0.2%).
I have relatives in Shanghai (China), antisemitism don't exist in China. My relatives in China live a good life and ever Chinese think that they are smart. One Chinese girl is interested in converting to Judaism and is welcomed by my relatives.
And what do Jewish people think of Chinese?? (and all other not Jewish people?) Because it’s always so “one direction” Like “what do they think about me(and my people), but what do you(and your people) those people??
Very sweet and nice movie! Hope to hear more Yiddish around. I learned Yiddish and will send this movie to my Yiddish teacher. About the Chinese people, I hope to meet some, maybe someday. They seem to be very diligent, industrious and very cleaver!
Pleased to meet you. We're just human beings, like you, and everyone else. God knows what we're doing here, and what's the point of existing for a century, give or take a few decades, and turning into dust. China, like Israel, is a family business, but bigger. But Israel is more mobile and resilient to change. China is big, but clumsy, and any changes take centuries, no matter what foreigners say about the rapid rate of change in China, I don't buy it one bit. I'm less concerned about any of that than what exactly we're supposed to do now that the security of the earth is in question. My life, like traditionally Chinese, is geared towards raising a family. So if the earth dies on me, immediately, it creates an existential crisis. What's the point of making money if my family will die anyway? I'm a Christian now, so that probably puts me at odds with Jews. But if I were Buddhist, it would probably still put me at odds with Jewish monotheism, so there's no winning there. But basically, if Jesus doesn't come back, we're all going to die anyway. And if He does, I might just live. Who knows, maybe He'll yet have mercy on me. He's forgiven sinners the first time He was here. Maybe He can forgive me again when He gets back. Does HaShem always keep everyone's souls in suspense like this? Is this sense of impending doom a normal Jewish experience? Because as a Chinese, I'm used to fearing our government, because they have the authority of life or death over us. But this is the first time I'm confronted with God, who sees everything, hears everything, knows everything, and can even look into my soul, in a way far more penetrating than any totalitarian regime. The only difference is, I don't feel fear and dread. Instead, I feel washed, healed and clean. That's a very un-Chinese feeling. Most Chinese are used to feeling screwed over by life and by everyone around them. This sense of Life and Peace is nice and restful. It's better even then the meditation of Buddhism, which only offers temporary relief. Who is your God? He seems to be able to get inside of me and give me a spring clean without charging me a cent. How can He afford to do such a service for free? He must be super rich. Anyway, thank you for sending your God to help us. And for the coming Saturday and Friday evening, Shabbat shalom!
Based on population proportion, there will only be 1.5 Jewish winner. Their actual winning rate is 100 times higher than their population proportion. This is not only true for Nobel prize, it is the same in other fields: US academia, intellectual competitions, Jews’ winning rate is always 100 times more than their population proportion.
Scary, a people who genuinely understand us, without any exaggeration in any direction, with the kind of neutrality we have towards them. We've met our match. Nobody knows what's going to happen next. Ok, HaShem, it's Your Move.
this is very interesting, thank you and it's also really funny to hear Yiddish but i do think it's important because it's part of our history and tradition.
In this video I took yesterday (april 29th, 2016) I found a shop they apparently intend to name "Jews" jewelry shop ... or at least they were using the name to draw in customers based on stereotypes of Jews being rich or clever ...whatever ... this shows exactly the way Chinese people view jews: .ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CeOU8g4sNdI.html i think it gives a candid look at the way Chinese people view Jews today ...
...we like you too!!! ...wir mögen Euch auch. There wouldn'd be a cultural history of Germany - not to talk of other European countries - without the contribution of Jews. Es gaebe keine kulturelle Geschichte Deutschlands - gang zu schweigen von anderen Europaeische Laendern- ohne den Beitrag der Juden.
it´s sad, there is some hate in some of these comments here. In my opinion jews are like every other culture/religion too. We are at least all people. A bit overrated, that Jews are smart and rich. Their destiny in the past made them this way. In Germany they had no other chances, than work in the economy. So they were the ones who had money before WW2. Chinese people have a lot of respect for that people, who archieves something. Jealousy for smart and rich people chinese mostly dont have, cause we learn early, that this is not the way to get a good life ourself.
You are interviewing Beijing people, which differs from anywhere else about 200km distance. Chinese is technically a nationality not an ethnicity, and far from it. #my2Cents

Thanks for somewhat proving the stereotype of most Chinese being arrogant, materialistic money lovers, as if wealth and superficiality are the only important things in this world. I would be upset and ashamed of the Chinese people if it weren't for the fact that I personally know many people of Chinese descent who are nothing like this! I see the Jewish curse of total dominion and usury over the world has infected many non-Jews as well.
We were always like this. It has nothing to do with the Jews. The Jewish presence in China is very minimal. We evolved in parallel to each other. Abrahamic faiths have never had much of a foothold in China until recently. Deeper values come because of Jesus. If it weren't for Jesus, all anybody would have is materialism, or asceticism (anti materialism). But that's it.
