Never say never... I couldn't resist a solo overnight backpacking trip to Lake Solitude in the Bighorn Mountains. I was prepared to feel nervous about being alone in the wilderness, but I still wasn't ready for the heart-stopping encounter I had during this experience.

I had a cow moose charge me while cross country try skiing once. They are very aggressive. I hike with bear bells and a side arm now because of that experience.

Excellent video! I hiked to Lake Solitude with my brother and a friend a couple years ago with the goal to make it a loop around Elk Mountain, but just did an out and back due to rain. Was there waterfall still flowing over the trail as you approach Lake Solitude that late into the season? Did you have to go through the stream that flows into Lake Solitude or did you find another trail? How far up toward Lake Misty Moon did you get? I'd like to go back and complete the loop and wonder if a later hiking date would be better. The water level was high when we attempted in.

I enjoyed the video. The moose response was surprising, I would have gotten out of the way as well but would have been in awe myself. I encountered a black bear in the Medicine Bow mtns a month ago. I just clapped my hands over and over and kept yelling go bear. He moved off.

I have been watching every video on the Cloud Peak wilderness. Great fishing in the lakes off trail. So I study the map and the satellite images and figure where I can get my full pack watching videos help me to understand the terrain up close that a map cannot tell me. I am a Fish and Wildlife Biologist with 41 years of backpacking experience. And a part time Wedding DJ. Over 200 solo trips. So your videos come along and they are unique. Your personality comes across when most do not. You come across as very likeable. Sweet and adventurous. Probably someone I would stop and talk to . I see the first three videos and the word lost comes up in all. Not knowing about how much of a climb, forgetting the bear spray. You mentioned taking a outdoor class. I took such a class a year ago to get a certificate. Not all are equal. I had more search and rescue experience than the instructors. It is hard to get wilderness first aid without attending a program that runs several days long like NOLS. But you really can get by by taking things step by step and progressing at a steady pace. First off, you need a map with a scale you can use. A map showing a large area is good for planning, but not useful in the Mtns. A USGS map has a scale of 1:15,000. Anything covering an area more than 1:30,000 won’t work. Second, be bear safe and it will keep all the animals away (most of the time). I lost a pair of boots to a mountain goat that entered my tent’s vestibule and found my leather boots (salt). Had a deer steal a shirt. Had one steal a camera (salt again). Had a flying squirrel get into a bag hung 15 feet up and 10 feet out on a cable. I have been using a Kevlar bag called an Ursack with plastic zippered bags called Loksacs (almost smell proof). You go into a place that really has grizzlies the rules change. Believe me, it is terrifying being alone in a tent and having a grizzly walking around your campsite. Do you have a first aid kit? No not a bunch of band aides. I have a custom kit that weighs 8 ounces and everything has been used once Mostly on other people. Take care, keep making videos.

I like how you diesect and explain that inner drive that a lot of people don't fully understand. I think it's more important than what people realize. It should be the main focus in life. No monetary incentives, just pure soul expansion. That's what life is about.

Great video. You are a brave,adventurous soul. I "think" I saw a different video where you hiked with a friend to Mistymoon? I'm the dummy who was Ill prepared in September and only made it to Lake Helen. Nonetheless I was packing a 10mm and my son bear spray.( I've never shot an animal nor intend to ever do so,but...) We are returning June 2023 with all 3 sons to try to make it to Cloud Peak. I learned a lot and had a fantastic time albeit at a slow,slow pace. Got the correct backpack and have been "practicing ". Can't simulate elevation but working on endurance will help. Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for enduring my rambling.

Great video. Always carry a personal locator beacon, let someone know where you're going, and when they can expect you back or send help. A rifle wouldn't be a bad idea.

I have been up there numerous times throughout my life. From when I was single and then later with my family. My kids are grown and my wife doesn’t like to camp. So I am wanting to go solo with my dog. Kudos to you. I recall seeing a moose in the Teton mtns on a trail. My buds and I just kind of quietly walked by while he sat in the weeds glowering at us.

I was planning on taking a trip to do some hiking but my feet are officially cold facing a 15 hour drive. I can't even seem to find any maps of the trails and it looks like you have to register and get a tag just to hike. That's communist and I don't want any part of that way of life. My business is mine. Not the governments.
@FlowerzWild7021
@FlowerzWild7021 Год назад
🙄 She was paying a fee at that specific area of the Bighorns I'm sure. Because it's a National Park. Wyoming is the least communist state there is. BUT there are still fees to get into parks and they go by the honor system at that. I literally just hiked and camped another part of the Bighorns and no, there is nothing like your talking about. 🙄
@CDAFishboy
@CDAFishboy Год назад
Don’t be ignorant. Registering at a trailhead is to help Search and Rescue you. I have never paid a fee to backpack in a wilderness area. Always free. Even some national parks are free. They just want you to pick up your permit so they can explain the regulations, like no campfires. I went on 6 trips this year to 4 different states, and six areas and did not pay an overnight fees.
