Horror master Wes Craven gave us plenty of nightmares, but in the early ‘80s, he was inspired to create a story where the nightmare itself is the monster. In this episode, we'll dig into Craven’s real-life inspirations for his most enduring boogeyman, Freddy Krueger, and look back at the wave of “Freddy-Mania” that dominated that decade. We'll also take a deep dive into trivia, fan theories and other oddities of this iconic franchise. So put the coffee on, because we’re pulling an all-nighter to deconstruct another '80s horror classic!
SERIES SYNOPSIS: DECONSTRUCTING is a monthly web series in which we choose one of your favorite horror movies and take it apart piece by piece (lovingly, of course) to see what makes it a classic. Each episode examines the origins, legacy and mysteries behind our beloved genre's most iconic titles... but we play fast and loose with the rules, so expect the unexpected!

What I feel "Wes Craven's new nightmare" has over "Scream" in its approach is that the audience had already spent time with the Elm Street characters, so having the actors play themselves brought a dose of reality to the film, while with "Scream" we're basically being told it's a movie. Both approaches work for me though, and I think they're both great. I feel that the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is timeless and one of the best the horror genre has to offer.

I first watched A Nightmare on Elm Street in 2004. I was 20 years old and I've got to say A Nightmare on Elm Street is a real classic and one of the greatest horror movies ever made and one of the most influential movies of all time. A truly original horror movie. Robert Englund was born to play one of the nastiest villains in cinematic history next to Frank Booth. Hannibal Lector. Chucky. The Joker etc. Freddy Kruger. A Nightmare on Elm Street was truly ground breaking for it's original premise. Practical effects. Casting. Main Score. Writing and Directing. Robert Englund. Johnny Depp. Heather Langenkamp. John Saxon. Amanda Wyss all gave outstanding performances. Ronee Blakely (Marge Thompson) was the worst actor in the movie and her acting was bad and she was miscast. Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp had good chemistry. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a masterpiece.

I use to go to a McDonald's as a kid back in the 1980s that had all these movie posters and photos of stars on the wall. I very distinctly remember the photo of Freddy which I think was signed. I never liked sitting at the table next to it because that bugger scares the bejesus out of me. Although not in the cowering in fear kind of scary but the I want to punch it in the face for doing that kind of scary. While that may be an over the top reaction, it's a legitimate indication of his effect.

I see NoES as a response to LHotL. The parents seem to be victorious in the end of LHotL, but is it possible to eliminate evil just by killing the human forms of it? It hasn’t brought their daughter and her friend back. While cathartic, they’ve sunk to the level of the murderers. What if there is an afterlife of some kind and the evil spirits are able to return to haunt your posterity? You’ve just made them angrier and more determined. I think Wes was trying to say that vigilantism isn’t the way to solve problems. I’m not saying that I agree or disagree with him. It does appear to be the overarching argument when both films are considered together.

Addendum: Wasn't Clancy Brown the actor who played the villainous "Krug" or was it "Kurgen" in The Highlander? Later, as in three decades later he played an Elm Street parent in the remake in 2010. In between he was the very creepy Brother Justin in HBO 's sadly short lived "Carnivale", which deserves a look in and of itself.

Wasnt Freddy Krueger named after the twat who bullied Wes Craven in high school? sweet revenge... and the red and green jumper was specific for some psychological reason, or something to that effect. my favourite horror franchise growing up. the first one has only been on english mainstream tv once if i recall, (not inc cable or whatever) they never got shown for some reason
@mattfittes9807

The kid who bullied Craven was just called Fred. The surname Krueger was an extension of Krug, the main villain in Last House On The Left, and Craven also said it sounded Germanic. The colours of Freddy's stripes in the original first draft of the script were red and yellow, but were changed to red and green after Craven read an article in a scientific journal which said those two colours being difficult for the human eye to put side by side

So much bs here. Freddy in the car, and any semblance of freddy surviving was all 100% bob (i know better than wes) shaye. Kane was never a consideration either, neither was jackie haley, nick cage or any other purported prospects. David Warner, yes. He was all ready to shoot, had make up done too. Charlie sheen was a very early consideration but 1000 a week was too steep for new line. One last note, Robert rubbed cigarette ash around his eye to meet wes. Pretty sure everything ive noted can be verified in never sleep again dvd, or nightmare never ends book. At least you knew how to pronounce heather's last name this time. 👍
